LIVE - Crystal Symphony (compared to Regent)

He only plans on wearing dress shoes for dinner, however, if he has a problem wearing them, I'm sure they will allow him to wear his tennis shoes.

Hello again Travelcat2!  I was just reading the Crystal forum and came to Regent to see this thread.  So you know......on my last Symphony cruise this spring I broke the strap on my dress shoes the 3rd day into my 46 day cruise!  I tried to purchase some ballet slipper type flats in the shop onboard, but they didn't have any that fit.  What to do????  I certainly wasn't going to hide in my cabin every evening at dinner so I held my head high and wore my white tennis shoes with my Black Tie Optional outfits.  Every day.  I did notice a couple furtive glances from the waitstaff as I entered the dining room the first night, but everyone, staff and other guests, didn't flinch and were totally gracious as always.  Next cruise I will bring a back up pair of dress shoes!

Thank you so much for sharing that.  If my husband has issues with his dress shoes, I'll tell him about your experience.

For those of you that have sailed on Crystal, is the song (one of my favorites ever) heard everywhere on the ship (like in your suite?) or do you need to be outside?

When we took the Explorer through the Panama Canal in 2017, we ran into the Navigator in Cabo San Lucas.  She was on her world cruise.  When she left Cabo she slowly circled the Explorer, and the Navigator staff hung a large sheet off the aft area of the ship that said "Navigate The World".  Their staff played "What A Wonderful World" over their loudspeaker.  Gave us goosebumps in a good way.

Have a great cruise.  While we would not consider a cruise on one of the larger crystal ships, we have 2 scheduled, one on their river ship and another on their expedition ship.  So I will be interested in your views.

Jackie, in some of the Alaska ports they are not allowed to play the song so don't be surprised if you don't hear it.

If you can't make it to the lectures you have lots of options.  You can watch them live from your suite but you can also watch them using the on demand feature from the Television.  You can also see a variety of lectures from previous voyages on your ini suite TV's.

I agree with FlyerTalker those two lecturers give interesting lectures and you can learn a lot.

I see that Mark Farris is performing on your cruise in the Avenue Saloon.  He is amazing.  I highly recommend you watching him perform.  His memory is outstanding.  Mention a song or performer you like and he will not forget.

There are two amazing dance instructors/dance team members on your voyage; Beverly and Curtis.  They will likely be performing on one of the evening shows and I highly recommend seeing them perform.

Very glad you have three days at sea so you can see and experience many of the enrichment programs that Crystal offers and just enjoy the ship.

Enjoy every minute.

Keith

At the risk of taking this thread off-topic, if this happens on a cruise, it could be worthwhile to talk to your steward/ess or butler about it. I broke a strap on my favorite dress sandals while on a 72-night cruise on Navigator. I mentioned it to our stewardess, who said "let me see what can be done." The next day she brought them back, repaired. By the ship's carpenter. That was 11 years ago. I still wear those shoes.

Keith, thank you for the hints.  They are so helpful!

wishIweretravelling - wish that the ship's carpenter was available to fix shoes for everyone!

Up at 6:30 a.m. - leaving for airport (to park car) around 9:30 a.m.  It only takes an hour (without traffic) to get to YVR.  The driver (provided by Crystal) will pick us up from the place where we park at 10:45 a.m. and take us through the traffic to the ship.

The excitement level is quite high.  Anxious to get started!

Taking the limo from YVR to the ship. Is that because the limo can’t cross the border?

Thank you for all of the well wishes.  They are very much appreciated.

FlyerTalker - thank you for taking the time for that informative post.  I have printed it and will take it with us.

chuckw - so happy that you will be on Explorer (and a little jealous).

This cruise only stops in Ketchikan, Sitka (both predicting rain) and Juneau.  We have been to all three ports previously and will be happy to stay on the ship (except in Juneau where we may venture out).  The biggest thing that we are looking forward to is Glacier Bay - a place where only some ships are allowed to visit.  Coincidentally, there was a show on Glacier Bay a week or so ago and it really whetted out appetite for this beautiful place.

For those of you that have sailed on Crystal, is the song (one of my favorites ever) heard everywhere on the ship (like in your suite?) or do you need to be outside?

Want to give a special thank you to nancygp - I have had such difficulty with posters on the Crystal board but she has been consistently fair and not judgmental.

Okay, time to start posting on the Crystal board as promised.  Cannot guarantee what will happen on that board.  I am not sailing Crystal to bash them (any more than we sailed NCL and Celebrity to look for what is wrong).  As I have said for many years, we did not consider Crystal as an option for many years since they had set seating and were amongst the last of the luxury cruise lines to limit smoking (Seabourn was the last to change their smoking policy.).

Cannot wait for this adventure to start!  As many know, Dennis fell off of a very tall ladder 7 weeks ago and fractured his foot.  He can now wear tennis shoes and we packed his dress shoes.  Crossing my fingers that he can actually wear them.  He and I both really need a break - one where we are taken care of.

P.S. FlyerTalker - correct me if I am wrong but hasn't Mark Preston performed on Regent?  I seem to remember him as being an excellent performer!

I also recommend the Magic Castle - sit in the front row. And as for Satchmo, the magician had to interrupt his performance until the end of the song, so yes, it was broadcast in the Avenue Bar, too loud for the magician to compete!

I took my first Crystal cruise this summer, a short one like you to test the waters. I have booked another one for next year, but in a penthouse; one gets used to the larger suites. And I've been cruising Regent since Song of Flower and the catamaran Diamond - the Captain commented it was like driving a bus! Have 3 Regent cruises upcoming. As with most cruisers, itinerary is the deciding factor. Silversea Muse next week from Seward to Tokyo - regardless of negative comments on Crystal board! So, anxious to read your commentary. Thanks for taking the time.

Jackie, on another thread I had recommended that you give the Avenue Saloon a try, now that I know that Mark Farris is performing that recommendation goes double. He is one of the best lounge performers I have ever had the pleasure to see.

Enjoy!

Not sure if Crystal would have picked us up from another country (agree that the border is an issue).  We prefer crossing the border ourselves as we have a Nexus/Trusted Traveler card and bypass almost all of the lines going into or out of Canada.

My DH just told me that we need to leave for Vancouver.  More when we get to the ship.

That husband of yours is quite a dear one. PH or jewelry? I would take the PH any day over diamonds.

Look forward to your review because Crystal is one I debate on and have backed out once already due to certain issues I find not appealing.

HA!! Actually, I prefer the memories and the extra space in the PH's makes my DH much happier and easier to travel with. He gets on a plane in Business Class, goes to sleep and is refreshed when we arrive to our destination. I want to travel "forever" and this is how we make it work. 😉

Finally onboard this beautiful ship.  NOTE:  This post will be identical on both the Crystal and Regent boards!

There was a communication issue with the car service that was suppose to pick us up.  I worked through our TA and finally told them to ask the car company where they would like to pick us up.  We asked to be picked up at the place where we park.  Well, that didn't work very well.  We took a shuttle to the airport and then a train (only 30 minutes -- much faster than going through Vancouver traffic).

Check-in was a breeze.  Because of the suite that we are in, there was a special area to check in.  Not sure if it was a coincidence or not but the Hotel Manager greeted us and then we were handed off to a person that would escort us to the ship.  Our butler (from Poland - has been on Crystal since 1995) greeted us and escorted us to the suite.  Interestingly, we have had this service on Celebrity, NCL and once on Regent.  It is definitely a nice touch.

The suite is lovely (will post photos on the Regent board when I have a chance to catch my breath).

Our butler signed us up for the Magic Castle small group performances - looking forward to it.  I am in the computer room (all new Apple computers - very impressive).  Apparently, one does not have to log in when in the computer room.  You can just do what you want to do.  I was given instructions on how to log in from my iPhone and iPad.  I also signed up for a couple of computer classes.  Very well organized - no crowds (despite the fact that the ship is full and carries somewhere around 900 passengers).

Lunch was in Waterside (the main dining room).  My DH (Dennis) had soup, some type of salmon and sugar-free chocolate mousse.  He loved the salmon and soup but wasn't a fan of the mousse.  I had a pasta with Bolognese for an appetizer and a Cobb salad followed by the chocolate mousse.  I enjoyed all of it (not over the top but quite good).  I was starving since I had nothing at home so did not take photos of the food (will take loads of photos in the future).  The tables for two are quite close together and we ended up having a great conversation with a British couple.

We love the atrium area with the lounge and the suite is so comfortable.  There is a his and hers closet and plenty of drawers.

Muster is at 4:15 pm - we leave at 5 pm.  We are doing an early dinner in a restaurant that I can't spell (Japanese with a sushi bar and an amazing menu).

More later.  Want to meditate and rest for a bit.  Very happy to be onboard!

Yes, sounds like you're really off to a nice cruise.  Your boarding sounds like a super plus of Regent, surprise even Oceania does this when you're in a OS.  I think being greeted and taken to your suite is class for a nice size suite.  Don't know why Regent doesn't do that. (Well, Mr. Jason?).

Looking forward to your thinking about your cruise.  Have fun and lot's of it!🤗

The car service is a nice touch also, even if yo0u had a mix-up.  So far it looks like Crystal 2👍 --Regent 0👎

Ron - not judging or comparing yet.  Just experiencing.  We are about to depart and I’ll be on the balcony to listen to “It’s a Wonderful World”.  Nice way to begin a cruise.

One thing that I do not understand is why the best suites (all the various PH suites) under the pool deck.  Just like Regent and other ships, there is scraping of chairs, people walking/running, etc.  Not a good choice in my opinion.

I’m enjoying these posts so far..but I’ll never be in the absolutely top suite of a ship.  So, I’m not sure how relevant to a normal cruiser...even a lower penthouse suite which would probably be myself.  I’m sure you get the best treatment in the most expensive suite.  Can’t imagine the treatment you would get in the Regent suite on Explorer or Splendor.  So?

Yes that maybe true, but everyone gets the same food, shows, restaurant service, cleaning of the cabin and so on---so I think we'll get a pretty fair report from Jackie.

Just reading what you have written so far, and even with that I'm a Regent fan from my own experience.  I am still looking forward to your experience on this ship.

Crystal's lowest level veranda suites are 254 SQ. FT., no walk-in closets, no privacy curtain separating the living and sleeping areas with double sinks and only shower-in-tub in the bathrooms.    Hard to compare with Regent on this aspect.

You mentioned that your butler was wit the ship since 1995. In my experience with Crystal most of the crew have been with the same ship their entire Crystal career.  This is one of the things that Crystal does that Regent/Radisson used to do. I think that not switching the crew between ships (or sister lines) make for a better passenger experience, as the crew are much more familiar with their ship. I will be interested in your  experience.

I just want to clarify.  I love that TC is doing this blog. Totally!  I just know if I ever chose to go on Crystal it will not be in the top suite.  I kind of wish it was from a nice suite but not top.  But hey...happy birthday!

JMariner,

I absolutely disagree - one of the things I love about Regent is boarding a ship and being greeted by a variety of staff/crew I've sailed with on any one of the 4 ships. I've gone from the Serenity to the Symphony and although the staff is very nice, I knew none of them, I could have been boarding a totally different line.

I have sailed on both ships - mostly on Serenity - and now, do know some on each ship.
