Recommended Posts

Hi, how can help me to find out how I get a local SIM card in Kochi/India?

We go to India on a land based trip next month so have done a lot of research on this. India has learned bureaucracy from Britain then taken it to the next level. You need to go to a local shop, Airtel seems to be the most recommended followed by Vodaphone, taking with you 2 passport sized photos and photocopies of your passport and Indian visa. You need to show  proof  your address in India. The shop completes the application and the SIM card is activated anytime from 2-24 hours later. You then turn your phone off then on and you should be ready to go. You need to be in the same area for purchase and when the phone is activated. I'm not looking forward to the whole experience but it will be worth the hassle once I have a local SIM card to call Uber/Ola

Why not just find a local wlan hotspot.

Everybody on TripAdvisor recommends having an Indian phone number when using Ola or Uber as the driver calls to confirm pick up (that should be interesting when they hear my English voice) We also need data to call them from railway stations and tourist sites. It only costs around us$10 for 30 days with 1gb a day + calls and text messages so its worth the hassle
