Hong Kong Cruises

The above showed the different neighborhoods and roads that were targeted by protesters on November 11th. This was published in advance so people could avoid those areas.

Of course things are fluid and can happen at a moment's notice, but so far the major interruptions have been pre-announced.

Also, countless people have been live streaming videos via apps and on YouTube etc, so if you are there you should ask the locals or your hotel concierge how to tune into those live streaming reports and footage.

Thank you so much for your responses. I did laugh when you said you felt safer in Hong Kong than in London! I’m used to it! Any time you’re in London ask me!

The cruise we are doing is The 15th to 29th Feb. Singapore, Ho Chi Minh, Ko kood, Bangkok a few hours only , bit of Cambodia, Halong bay, few other stops , Hong Kong at the end.

we booked HK return business from London , As it was the only air miles BA would offer us. We fly out the 10th feb, stay at airport hotel HK and fly out the next morning early to Singapore  which gives us 3  days there.
We already have 4 flights now. I am thinking of flying somewhere else though, I did go to Bangkok 20 years ago ( the only place in Asia I have been) We are also in Ho Chi Minh for 2 days already. I know I could get off ship in Hanoi but it is cold And it would mean being there for 6 days as it’s the last stop before HK. Our flight home from HK is the 3rd March.

I would like to stay somewhere interesting, with History, a bit of fun with shopping at the end of the trip.

I have looked at flying back to Bangkok, which is hot, also to Tokyo or Shanghai which is very cold.

Great advice Rols and sfvoyage, Macau is a good choice pre or post cruise. It is a lovely East meets West experience. Don't go to the Casino's and lose your hard earned money. Enjoy the great restaurants and lots of Pastel de Nata (Portuguese custard tarts). The local culture is rather special.

Sfvoyage we will be on our B2B on Encore picking up your brother and sister in law in Bali.

The published Protest schedule is reassuring at least you know where to avoid. We are surprised at Kwun Tong as protest location. Many thanks .

Susi n you are correct, folk forget that this part of Asia is winter and can be chilly.

Susi N:  We are on the same cruise as you.  I just looked at Hanoi weather in February, and average low is 60 F and high 70 F.  I don't consider that cold.  We have made back up hotel reservations in Hanoi, and booked one-way flights to HKG on our scheduled departure day of March 3.  We still plan on going to HKG, but if things continue to deteriorate we can get off ship in Halong Bay, then take car to Hanoi and explore Vietnam for four or five days.  Sorry things are up in the air for your 35th anniversary trip, but there are still options for having a great time.  Hope to see you on board.

Oops - yes you did say Feb 15 but I looked up the wrong cruise and found the one before yours, sorry about that. So definitely not back to HCM, but Bangkok has a lot more than you'll manage to see in a few hours and Macau is a choice you can almost make as the ship docks.

Tokyo is pretty chilly that time of year, it's another great city to visit however if you've never been, just need to take winter wear with you on what is a summer cruise. That would probably put me off given the amount of luggage we always seem to end up taking already!

At least you're looking at options and are determined not to let anything going on in HK ruin your cruise, and in the end, that's all that matters.

I suspect that Seabourn will be going ahead with their cruises as scheduled. We are on the cruise immediately prior to yours whereby we will be departing Hong Kong on Feb 1st and returning to Hong Kong on Feb 28th. We also have 3 days pre-cruise booked at a hotel in Hong Kong. So far our TA has been able to get us a number substantial price reductions due to the poor demand. I was even able to renegotiate our business class airfare with Cathay Pacific for quite a savings. I will be contacting our hotel over the next while to see what we can do there.

Personally, I think Hong Kong will be safe as long as we avoid mob protests.

We are on this cruise with you 2/1-2/29. I am interested in hiring guides for private tours in various ports. Do you know if there is a board on Cruise Critic for our particular cruise?

Anyone passed through Hong Kong recently? Disembarking on Jan 4 from Ovation. Was planning to stay a couple of days but thinking about just heading straight home.

Thoughts or recent experiences appreciated.

We're disembarking the same day and will be staying in Hong Kong for a few days.

When I travel to Hong Kong, I would like to avoid the 'scheduled' locations of protests.  How would I be able to access the timetable of the events (either in English and Chinese)?  Thanks for your attention.

We'll be on a cruise in Hong Kong in March/April and I've bookmarked this site to keep informed.  It consolidates info about the affects of protests on transport and traffic.

Today on the Asia forum, this site was posted for real-time info on planned protests over Lunar New Year.
