Majestic Princess Australia to NZ/alcoholic drinks in USD?

Recommended Posts

We are booked on Majestic Princess for a cruise from Sydney to New Zealand in November 2019.  I have a few queries please.

Are alcoholic drinks charged in USD, AU or NZ currency, please?

Paper work indicates we can board at 4.30pm.  As we arrive in Sydney earlier in the morning, are we able to board earlier, even if there is a fee to pay?  Husband is somewhat limited in mobility and we would not wish to have to walk around Sydney, more than is necessary.

With anytime dining is it necessary to prebook a chosen time on the first day we board?  (We were required to do this on another cruise line)

Can anyone enlighten me on internet access quality and costs please.

The currency on board the Majestic in Australian waters is the Australian dollar.

You can usually board as soon as boarding starts. I've never seen Princess care one way or the other. There is no fee, if they give you any hassle, which they won't, point out your hubby's mobility problems.

Anytime dining is turn up at anytime dining.

The internet on Majestic is the old slow version, i.e. not Medallion Net. All cruise ship internet is expensive.

Regarding the internet, look in you Cruise Personalizer.

The personaliser won't have anything relating to internet. It's one of the quirks of how Princess does business in Australia.

Thanks for the info.  AUD in Australian waters, so still AUD charging on board once we leave Australian waters, eg when in NZ waters?

Your Cruise Personalizer will show that the on-board currency is AUD. It will stay AUD for the whole cruise. They do not change mid-cruise in this part of the world, or in any other🙂

The price of drinks will be quoted on the drinks menu in AUD. Prices will be higher than you are accustomed to, but there is no 18% gratuity added. The price you see is the price you pay. 🙂

The Majestic Princess does a few NZ cruises in November. I cannot see any reason why boarding would be later than normal, that is starting around 11am. Your boarding time of 4.30 would have been allocated to there isn't excessive congestion at the terminal with everyone arriving at once.

I suggest you arrive at the terminal at whatever time suits you. If you fly in that morning, I suggest you go by taxi straight from the airport to the terminal. With your husband having limited mobility, you should ask for assisted boarding when you arrive at the terminal. There is absolutely no charge, but you will be helped to board fairly soon after you arrive and check in.

Also remember that currently $1 AUD is equivalent to $0.68 USD so you need to factor that in when looking at the price of drinks.

The price you see is what you are charged, but Princess has built in a gratuity.

And falling.

So for those with US dollars now is a great time to visit.

I posted the full MDR wine list, plus two drinks menus (in full, I think), from our recent Sea Princess cruise on this thread. Prices are in AUD with no additional gratuities - what you see is what you pay.

The new wine list does differ slightly from the US one - some US wines have been replaced by AUS/NZ ones.

Last March in Sydney they had us wait in an area just outside the terminal while the previous cruisers disembarked. There's some seating. I'm elite so I got on rather rapidly and saw an area just inside where those with walkers & wheelchairs were waiting to be escorted up. It's quite orderly

Sort of, but it could be read to assume there is no gratuity at all, but it is baked into the prices.  I was just trying to clarify.  NP.

Thanks everyone. On another cruise line everything was USD plus a bank currency exchange fee! So assuming this cruise to New Zealand is all AUD we will also avoid a bank fee.

Is it wise to take NZ currency or just use our card in ATMs in NZ?

Will we be charged the US$15.50 per person per day gratuity or is it built into the fare price, this is on Majestic Princess, Sydney to New Zealand and return.

As the cruise is one based in Australia and you are Australian, the gratuity is built into the price you paid for the cruise, unless you booked through an US travel agent. Therefore, no extra gratuity charges.

We just use NZ ATMs. You only need cash for small transactions, most places take credit cards.
