So....how is that different than walking on the ship with $200 which you deposit at check-in?  It gives the same $200 'onboard credit'.

If I walk on the ship with $200 I have to go to guest services to get it on my account. I'd rather not do that.

The only difference for me, I guess, is that I collect points on my credit card and I use these points to reward my myself with discounted travel.

So... it is more advantageous for me to use my credit card instead of cash. I basically live on a cash-less system and do not carry much money on me.

I think everybody has their own way of doing things and that is the way it should be. You have your way, and I have mine.

I only asked a question about purchasing cruise cash before I board the ship and having the option to cash out any leftover credit in the casino so I don't lose it to a "non-refundable" onboard credit.

If I were to purchase $100 in cruise cash and I still have some cash left on my account toward the end of the cruise, can I use my sail pass in the ship's casino to buy chips and then cash in whatever chips I have left for cash in order to use up my "onboard credit"?

Do not convert your cruise cash by purchasing casino chips ... there is a 3% charge fee at the tables to get chips.  Its best to transfer money from your sail & sign account to your casino account via the slot machines, then cash out your players bank at the casino cage.

Thank you for that advice. I never thought of that. Slot machine it is.

I don't personally use cruise cash but did once use a gift card.  Here are a few reasons someone might want to use Cruise Cash:

  • Gift card balances are refundable to another gift card (or cash out with the same casino trick).  Another gift card is only good if you will take another Carnival cruise
  • Gift cards usually require at least a $100 purchase ($90 with discount), while cruise cash starts at $25.  Lower levels can be easier for some with budgeting or make a nice gift while the higher amount might be too much.
  • Since it is purchased on-line, you don't risk forgetting your cruise cash at home.

Very good point about not forgetting to pack your cruise cash . I have a special bag that anything cruise related goes into, and it travels in my carry on bag when I fly to the cruise. With the lower minimum purchase, it's easier for me to buy cruise cash each time I go to the travel agent to make a cruise payment, other people may have a different and just as practical routine.

Counting down the days until I embark the Carnival Splendor, oh, price OTC anti-nausea medication, while it's more expensive than prescription, I won't have medication left over that I might not use in time. That's now on my To Do For Cruise list.
