kenziebaby Posted April 21, 2004 #1 Share Posted April 21, 2004 We are coming in to Galveston 6/19 for a 6/20 sailing on the Elation. We will be leaving our rental car at the port while cruising and are looking for a reasonably priced place to stay for our family of 5. I booked a room at the Flagship Hotel for $129/night (which includes taxi service to and from the pier). Anyone have feedback on this hotel -- accomodations, comfort, experiences? Also, we are open to exploring other options as well. Suggestions of a nice bed and breakfast that work be able to accomodate us? Thanks, Karen Elation 6/20/
davidaperryman Posted April 21, 2004 #2 Share Posted April 21, 2004 I have stayed there several times and like it. It is not the newest or fanciest but it is comfortable and located near good places to eat. It is built on a pier out over the water so if you have a room on the water side you can go out on the balcony and look straight down into the breakers. The other side overlooks the parking lot and water beyond.
brn2crz Posted April 21, 2004 #3 Share Posted April 21, 2004 Ok,no disrespect to David..But I really can't recommend the Flagship. He is right that it has a unique location. But since it has become the property of Mr Tillman,or in the process of it has really gone down..It was already pretty worn out,and that smell..IT is suppossed to be torn down, and a new hotel with small amusement park in its place,so they are not doing much to keep it up.There are many outstanding hotels for that price.I don't know of a B&B that will handle 5,unless you want two rooms.I would recommend you try The Galverstonian,The Islander East or the Reef for condominium facilities. redryder75 Posted April 21, 2004 #4 Share Posted April 21, 2004 Gotta go with brn2crz on his comments. Flagship is really showing its age and while uniquely located out into the water, I believe for that price much nicer accomodations can be found. Hard to beat Harbor House for location, plus good eats right there and only a block or two from Strand downtown district. lsp Posted April 21, 2004 #5 Share Posted April 21, 2004 The Flagship is not a good place to stay. We live close to Galveston and the last time we were inside, the carpet was falling apart, the walls look like crap and it has a very musty odor. There are a lot of B&B's in Galveston that are really nice. Linda Cruising on the Glory 6/12/
tworth Posted April 21, 2004 #6 Share Posted April 21, 2004 We've stayed at The Flagship twice on trips to Galveston in the last year and liked it very much. We were there in September and they were doing a lot of outside work at that time. Our room was large and very clean. It is an older place and the bathrooms could use some updating but the view in wonderful. Didn't notice any musty smells. We were back in February for a short stay and the hallways had all been freshly painted. Again the room was large and clean. The elevator was kind of creaky and scary, but other than that we had no complaints. We seriously considering staying there next year before our cruise. BrendaB1 Posted April 21, 2004 #7 Share Posted April 21, 2004 I stayed there a couple of years ago & will never stay again. Incompetent staff, assigned us uncleaned room, then gave us occuppied room, with somebody asleep in bed when we opened door with key, next room no a/c. Hotel was dirty & stunk. We checked out after one night never to return again.I sure hope they have made some changes to correct their problems as this used to be high class, premier hotel back in its day. New management & regular upkeep are desperately needed to restore this landmark. kenziebaby Posted April 21, 2004 Author #9 Share Posted April 21, 2004 Thanks so much to all for the feedback...however mixed it appears.... I am interested in checking out some more places and would greatly appreciate any "locals" input, especially names and phone numbers of places to contact... It seems that the summer prices are ineffect in June, and some places I called were sold out and nothing was less than $120. Ideally we would like to find something fairly inexpensive, but also would like to get a decent nights sleep so our kids are "ship shape" come morning! brn2crz Posted April 21, 2004 #11 Share Posted April 21, 2004 Kenzie.. You are going to pay primo in June..www.galveston.com has all your hotels with links, numbers etc. If you are going to park a car,you need to include that in your pricing. It will cost you about 60 to park in one of the two terminal parking areas. Most Hotels offer some sort of free parking/shuttle combo.I will tell you these are a little better deal in the off season. Also, you will need to do tons of research,if price is a big factor.I say this because some will say "free parking" then charge you 30 more for the room, then they would someone without "cruise package" Give me some info on what you want, such as are you driving,or will you transpo to and from, what you want to do while you are there, how important price, location, activities, view are..Also,as someone mentioned.Bay Area Blvd has 3 or 4 nice reasonable hotels.ALso there is a brand new Days Inn &Suites in Dickinson, about 10 miles closer to the pier. Also, like I said, check out the Galvestonian and The Islander for great condo's on the beach... sorry, just read again that you will have a rent a car..I personaly think it would be worth it to pay a little more for a hotel that includes parking, stay in Galveston and enjoy some great activites and food. lower grade, but ok... Commadore,Guidos Seaside Inn,Super 8 mid-grade pretty good Laquinta Inn and suites,Holiday Inn express, Best Western,Harbour Side Inn High Grade and really nice San Luis,The Galvez,The Tremont,The Hilton resort,The HArbour House,Moody Garden Hotel, B&Bs (dont think you will find any for 5) and the condos I have already mentioned.. ChardonnayKJ Posted April 22, 2004 #12 Share Posted April 22, 2004 Try the Victorian Condos are very nice. Full kitchen, playground, across the street from the beach, pretty clean and up to date. Flagship is probably the oldest hotel is Galv. and looks it. I am a native Houstonian and go to Galveston 2-3 times a week in the summer. Other possibilities are Harbor House and any hotel on the San Louis Property . I believe there is a Holiday inn at that site also. check into the web site for gal. 6/27 Conquest let's party! brn2crz Posted April 22, 2004 #13 Share Posted April 22, 2004 Have you stayed at the Victorian lately? Ever since it was turned into a time share,it has really gone down hill. And after 5 years of being center point for Kappa Beach weekend,in very bad repair. That used to be our favorite ,but no more.Much better facilities at the Galvestonian or Islander.IMHO Cathy NCL-Starward 1982 NCL-Seaward 1986 NCL-Norway 1992 Carnival-Celebration 1996 Carnival-Jubilee 2001 RCI-Rhapsody 1999 RCI-Rhapsody- 2003 Grand Princess or Rhapsody ? 2004
ChardonnayKJ Posted April 24, 2004 #14 Share Posted April 24, 2004 Good to know. It has been awhile but it still looks nice on the outside. Poor Flagship looks like it is falling in the Gulf. Hey do you live close to that mall where the old ladies were looking for a mall but turned up on an airplane runway. That was the funniest newscast I've ever heard. 6/27 Conquest let's party!
