Premium Internet Package

Recommended Posts

Is the Premium Internet Package available on board or does it have to be purchased before sailing?  I have loads of OBC and I would rather use some of it for the internet package.

It can be purchased on board, although it will cost more than if purchased in advance.
However, if you are using OBC that would otherwise go to waste, that won't really matter.

We were on the Amsterdam for a 14 day  Alaskan cruise in September.  The internet packages were discounted a bit if purchased ahead of the cruise.  As I remember, the premium if purchased before boarding was about the regular cost of the next package.  (As I don't use it much, I can't remember the package names!  Sorry)  My DH decided to wait and use OBC for his purchase.  It wasn't the premium one as he only uses it for email.  No video streaming.

So bottom line, if you see a price for the premium package before boarding if could be a better deal.  But if you need to use OBC and cost doesn't really matter...wait!!

Thanks for the quick answer Ruth. Do you know if there is a big difference in price?  I’m sure I can find lots of things to use the OBC on if it is a significant difference.  I’ve always just purchased a package of minutes before while onboard, but I like the idea of unlimited minutes.

The packages are all unlimited; It's a matter of what the package includes. The social package allows access to some social media sites, like Facebook. Surf package allows access to a wide variety of sites, including email. Premium package adds streaming sites.
The premium package purchased in advance still costs more than the surf package. Premium is the only one that can be purchased in advance.

Somewhere on this board there is a chart listing out the prices for cruises up to something like 28 or 30 days. I can't put my finger on it, but perhaps someone else can.

What you save is paying for the premium plan for a little more than the surf plan

Thank you for the table -I appreciate it.

I have a 24 day cruise forthcoming, and there is a $100 difference in the total cost between the Surf and Premiums services.

I have AT&T service, and can make calls via WiFi.

With the Surf Plan, does anybody know if one can make AT&T WiFi calls via the Surf plan??

I know movies and Skype need the premium plan, but Calls over WiFi do not need the bandwidth that Movies and Skype with the video bandwidths needs.

I try to avoid paying for internet package, and Cellular-at-Sea for calls while at sea, AND international Cell Service while in-port for Calls & Wifi.

First, I would look under gifts and indulgences and see if the premium plan is available to you for pre-cruise purchase. If it is, the price of the premium package in advance is a lot closer to the surf plan on board. Premium is the only one available in advance.

Second, while I have the premium package on this cruise I have had the surf package on a few and have made calls using Vonage VOIP and Whatsapp without any problems. I have used T-Mobile WiFi calling on this cruise without a problem, but again I have premium for this one.

Does this chart show pre-cruise pricing or on-board pricing?

The chart shows on board pricing. The only package that has been sold pre-cruise to this point is the premium package which HAL is selling for slightly more than the Surf Plan on board.

I paid $111.99 pre cruise for the premium which would be $139.99. Savings of $28. I should then get my five star discount of $30 on board.  Hoping to use skype and wifi calling.

If I pre-purchase the premium package before the cruise, it won’t count as spend for Mariner bonus day purposes, right? Another data point for comparison - my 12 day cruise is showing $160 for premium pre-cruise vs the $200 shown by Richwmn.

It should, just like any other pre-purchases except casino chips.

All casino charges, cash advances, Future Cruise deposits, and associated fees are excluded. All other onboard purchases, for example, Hotel Service Charge, Beverage Service Charge, taxes, shore excursions and all gift items purchased online or through Ship Services count towards bonus Cruise Day credits.

Pre-purchased wifi will count towards the Mariner spending bonus.

For my upcoming 14 day cruise, pre-purchased premium internet is $175.99.   Purchased onboard it would cost me $219.99.  The Surf package purchased onboard would cost $169.99.  I will purchase it ahead of time.  The premium plan worked well for me last summer in Greenland and Iceland for two video conference calls I had for work.

in August of 2018 I had the Surf plan for Canada/New England and was able to make wifi calls with no problem.  I have Consumer Cellular.
