We're back on the Regal in just a few days time and I'll be playing around with this some more. The naif in me hopes that they will ultimately patch this hole, though it's probably WAY down on their list of things to do. The strange thing is, it would seem logical that all they have to do is code in a requirement into the software to require a PIN # to access that specific info screen, or simply eliminate the sensitive data altogether.

I've been telling them about the problem ever since they had the medallions up & running on the Regal.

So without the medallion PC won't know where you ate, or what you bought? Love it!  Especially when they slip my shipboard account the under the door. the last night. What about the casino???

No Tom, they will NOT know where I ate, unless I go to a specialty restaurant. They won't know what I bought because the only things I buy on shipboard are things I pay cash for; no crummy art or over-priced jewelry.

Just curious but what things do you buy on the ship that uses cash?

They've stopped asking for a cabin number in the main DR since most people have a medallion. If you don't have it they might ask for your cruise card.

Not to be oppositional, but if you don't eat in speciality restaurant, they will still know where you ate (unless you didn't eat at all). How do you pay cash for shipboard purchases. Serious question as I have actually never been into a shipboard store store or stopped at the bazaar tables that seen to appear on a regular basis I thought it was cashless? I do buy a bottle (or two) of hootch pre-cruise though as well as bring my own wine (homemade)

Food for thought on "monetize":  The cruise industry is competitive in the extreme, so that monetization ends up as, yes dividends, but also lower fares.

Cruises before this system knew where I ate, and where I've been based on my activity or interest.  This system isn't really anything new, at least in the foundation of it.

Anyway, I will say those of you using Proxy servers or private browsers are not in the majority, and likely not the target audience for this program.   (coughs)

No. How would they? They don't know if I ate in the buffet, pizza/burger grill, MDR or International Cafe.

MDR, they would know  but unless quiznos, Pizza hut, or Burger king was interested what would it matter and the medallion wouldn't tell them if you at at any of those places or just walked through anyway - good grief....

Just what is you buy on board for cash? Inquiring minds want to know.

With one exception, casino gambling, cash is not accepted on board for any purchases. All purchases run through your on board account or in some cases can be charged directly to a credit card.

Ever been closer then 8 inches to someone on a cramped Princess elevator.

The medallion DOES NOT open your door, it unlocks it so you still need a free hand to place on the door handle and open the door. If someone has a pacemaker they might want to err on the side of caution.

I found it weird when I was waiting for an mid ship elevator where there are the standard 4 elevators and 2 glass elevators. The pictures of everyone standing there pops up o the screen. I don't care to pictures every time I walked past one of those over sized screen readers. Those that like the Medallion should use it, those that don't should get a normal cruise card. Nice to have choices.

Oh by the way now all those paper marketing pages ( and the evening patter)  come under the door so you have to bend ( poor cabin steward has to bend down to all his cabins to slide them under the door) instead of the mail box you previously had mounted outside your door.

I'm afraid you are incorrect. It is true that the screens do not show the personal cabin information on its 'default" screen, but the passenger/Medallion cabin number ARE available by selecting another screen. If someone found your lost Medallion, they absolutely CAN find and access your specific cabin. It seems that after 4 Medallion cruises you just aren't aware of that fact.

Do not need a screen for this. If you have lost a Medallion that has your name on it or, on a ship with cruise cards, lost a cruise card with your name on it it is easy for someone who finds it to find which cabin you are in.

I've seen many posts here on CC saying opting out of the Medallion was possible but I've also read posts from people saying they were refused a card when they asked for one.  In the early days of the Medallion program, Princess actually stated in writing on their site that they were happy to accommodate "opting out", but I can't find this statement any more. Is anyone aware of a formal statement from Princess that does say a passenger can ask for and receive a card?

Every person who uses this website and posts on these boards sees ads in the margins of the page.

Not me. I use an ad blocker.

Having an app on your phone that allows you to locate family or friends is a good thing, but having similar functionality on the Ocean app is a bad thing?

Only if the person you want to locate has given the system permission to disclose their location to you will this happen. Of course certain Princess security staff can locate a Medallion (and thus theoretically the person who has it) without that person's permission.

This is rather important info, so please elaborate. None of the many pre-Medallion cruise cards I have show our cabin number, only our name, muster station, portfolio # etc. I'm curious as to how someone finding such a card can find out your cabin number? The Medallions we have also do not show cabin #s, so without accessing the TV screens to show the cabin #, how would one access this info?

It is easy, but not obvious.  I have used this technique to find the cabin numbers of people I was looking for when I knew their names.

I choose not to publicize how this can be done so that those with evil intent do not know how.

The boards around the ship can provide the cabin location but only after using the medallion placed on the board you then touch "cabin location" on the screen and it provides it along with a dotted route from where your standing.

So what you're saying is that anyone can look up a persons cabin by querying the touch screen - if you know their name. (unless they opt out of being found?) This sounds like another security flaw in the medallion system.

If so, I don't think any hotel allows that and it's strange that the ship would do it.

If you ask for a persons cabin at the front desk, they'll refuse and only allow you to call them on their phone.

Thank goodness for that because it would probably cause a panic run on Reynolds Wrap.

In the stores as soon as you walk in they get your photo on their ipad.

The door opens too soon when you are getting close to it, not good if you do not want someone to know what room you are in.

I am going to try to have it in a RFID Blocking case next year.

That works   But  we  put ours in the safe  and they came and changed the sensors in our cabin both of them as they thought they where not working   The one  n the bathroom is really disturbing

They are sensors, not cameras. No worries.

Oh the horror.

They still know if your in the cabin even if you're using the cruise card.

Only that you open the door .   RFI case solves all that is why they changed out sensors as after we open the door we disappeared.  After a few more days they did it again    Makes you wonder why ??
