Quite possibly, it is just what seems to be happening on a few cruise lines now, offering upgrades for a price or even as Royal does with it's Royal Up program where you bid for an upgrade (there is a set minimum bid in place). With cruise lines looking to increase profits without raising fares or cutting services, this is a easy way for them to do it.

The airlines do it also.  Every time I fly I get an email to bid for an upgrade.  I just wonder how many people actually do it.

I certainly look, we upgraded on Royal through that program from a Oceanview to a Silver Suite for $150pp (the minimum bid), sometimes it is worth it.

Well done!  Is that total amount extra, e.g. $300.

Yep, total price with what we paid and the upgrade, is still cheaper than what the inside cabins are currently going for on the same cruise.

With Melbourne being so close to the end of the cruise in Sydney, it isn't likely Princess would be swapping entertainers in Melbourne or even disembarking crew.

I've seen crew and entertainment changes 2 days in/out on a cruise; it's fairly common.

Helps with utilisation as it means that cabin is freed up for the next entertainer, and also crew changes do occur.
