READY-TO-GO - LIVE  REPORTS FROM CRYSTAL SERENITY FOLLOWING A “MAGICAL FAMILY” GETAWAY

Recommended Posts

Roy...I wanted to add that on our previous visits (we've been here two prior times) 2012 (Crystal Cruises maiden-port-of-call stop) and 2013 we tendered both  times.

The benefit of being docked is since we have the overnight you don't have the issue of tenders running in this area which has high traffic volume when it is dark outside.  I am not sure whether or not this is the first time Crystal has used this dock.

I'm a rather keen golfer, so i wondered if there are any facilities for golf practice on board Serenity?

My husband really enjoyed the golf pro and classes on our Symphony cruise last year. He even got to play in Ushuaia at the “southernmost course in the world”. Not much of a course but he got a certificate and now wants to do the geographic grand slam.

I'm most impressed, just the sort of thing I was hoping for! Thank you Keith.

It's a shame you don't get on until Sydney.  I think you would have liked the golf events at the World Cruise games.

Hello,  my boyfriend and I will be on the Serenity in Jan 2021, going from Miami to LA.  First time on Crystal Ocean and the canal (we've only done Crystal once which was last fall on the Bach).  I have a few questions:

1.  In that picture of the ship entering the canal, is that deck open to the public?  And is that a hot tub in the middle?  Can anyone use that hot tub?

2.  What is the mall you mentioned? Is that in the middle of downtown?

3.  Dress Code:  My boyfriend is an engineer here in Silicon Valley, where dress is very casual.  Thus, he wears jeans everyday and is most comfortable in them.  For non-BTO nights, can he wear nice jeans to Waterside with a nice polo shirt?  And for BTO nights, can he get by with wearing nice pants with a dress shirt and no tie?   I am not about to require him to wear a suit or sportcoat in hot and humid weather.  Will they turn him away in Waterside or Umi if he does not have a suit or sportcoat on?

Thanks, Christine

HI Christine.

1.  The area you are asking about is for the crew  only.  There are two hot tubs on Deck 12 along with a swimming pool for the guests.

2. The mall I mentioned in Panama City is about ten minutes from where we were docked.

3.  He can wear nice jeans (no holes) and a polo shirt but the majority of men will be in pants other than jeans such as docked like pants.  On BTO nights if he goes to any  of the restaurants  other than Silk or the Brazilian Restaurant dress slacks and a a shirt with a collar and sports jacket would be appropriate.  At Silk  and the Brazilian Restaurant he could wear nice pants and a dress shirt.  If he went to Waterside he would not be turned away but it is not what they recommend and he would be one of maybe a couple of guests in that attire.

The Dress code is available here - https://www.crystalcruises.com.au/guidebook/shipboard-life-guidelines-policies

Specifically on BTO nights

Black Tie Optional Attire (on Crystal Cruises only)

A Black Tie Optional evening offers a celebratory opportunity to dress more formally on a special evening(s). For men, this includes a dark suit with tie, or tuxedo; for women, this includes a formal cocktail dress, evening gown or dressy evening separates. On Black Tie Optional evenings, we request at least a jacket to be worn by men and a dress, skirt or dress slacks and blouse or sweater to be worn by women. Jeans may not be worn in any dining venues or lounges, including the Casino, on Black Tie Optional evenings.

It‘s not about what you require him to wear on BTO nights - it’s Crystal’s dress code. It is quite clear on the expectation a jacket will be worn on BTO nights - that extends to Waterside and to other venues around the ship including bars, theatres and casino

They likely won’t decline entry to these venues but he will be in a very small minority who don’t comply with the dress code. It’s not hot or humid inside the ship - it’s air conditioned so it doesn’t matter whether your in the tropics or colder climates

Why not just follow the Crystal dress code?

A SEA DAY ON CRYSTAL SERENITY AS WE SAIL TO OUR NEXT PORT OF CALL

Today we will look forward to a sea day on Serenity.

Before last evening we watched a portion of the Houston/Kansas City National Football game in our room rather than going to one of the lounges.

I know there will be some happy people and some not very happy.  The amount of scoring is incredible and the tide really turned from Houston dominating the game to Kansas City dominating.

Had dinner at Silk last evening for the first time of  the cruise.

For those of you who followed our travels last year it took a couple of times on Serenity  and one before that on Symphony to figure out our approach to Silk.  This included what to order, how much to order and how to ask the meal to be sequenced.  Once we figured it out we enjoyed each visit.  For us one time each voyage works well.

We were three for two and one half hours.

We enjoyed the cuisine.  We find it to be very tasty.

While they offer to serve everything family style by placing all items for the entire table in the middle of the table Anne Marie and I shared our own items and Crystal Society Host Andre Triplow and Cruise Sales Consultant Jaque Brown ordered and shared the times they ordered between the two of them.

As we used to do at Tastes we discussed the sequencing of the items.  All four of us ended up ordering the salad so that was served first without any hot food accompanying it.   This way when the hot items arrive we can enjoy them hot.  We shared some appetizers followed by one entree for Anne Marie and two for me.  Portion size is really good so you can get a tasting of many items.

They did a  really nice job of bringing out items so all four of us had something to eat at the same time.

I would say midway through the meal the venue was very busy.

We had a lovely time.

Just a  few photos follow.

Keith

Some more thoughts....

We’ve now visited Cartegena, transited the Panama Canal, and visited Panama City.

The Spanish New World is  not something we’ve really experienced before and it’s an integral piece of New World history. So I’m glad to get this exposure and learn more about it.

The Panama Canal is a visionary and engineering wonder. Crystal has a very good program of presentations and narration to explain the history, construction and operation of the Canal. My pictures look a lot like Keith’s, except his are better, so I’ll defer to his photos.

We docked in Panama City, which is apparently a stroke of good fortune to not have to tender. The city is a study in contrast between old and new, and rich and poor.  We took a Crystal tour that covered a lot of colonial history as well as a tour to the Miraflores visitor center. It was very hot and probably covered too much in the midday heat. Everyone kept up,  but skipping one of the sites would be worth considering. And yes, I’ll let Crystal know too.

We had dinner in Umi Uma last night and it was fabulous! We are not sushi fans but there was a great selection for us as well. The lobster tempura, shrimp tempura, truffled lobster, and wagyu beef were superb as was the service.

We went to the show last night, Vox Fortura. They are a quartet with great voices who got their break on “Britain ‘s Got Talent”. They combine classical and soul music and put on a wonderful show. Crystal certainly does a great job with entertainment!

The show was great last night. Third time I have heard them.

heat.. yes it was hot and I swam a lot. But this heat is nothing..will only be worse.  I think a four hour tour is short enough as I want to see as much as possible in a new city or country.  I watch the tour times and length before I book . All the tours were very early yesterday so I know many guests were back for lunch.

someone asked about that lovely crew area. I saw more crew there that day than normal. They are very lucky to have this area.

Keith, is your large typeface a default setting? Do you know it is so large in the CC format?

Vox Fortura is super, we agree.

I love the fact it is easy to read. Wish I knew how to make mine bigger...be easier to find mistakes.  I use a bigger font at home for emails.

Pat  it is not a default  setting  for me  and  I am purposely using it for the live blogs.

Normally I don't use  it for regular posts.

Best to you.

DAY AT SEA WHILE SAILING TO NICARAGUA

Yesterday was a day at sea as we are sailing to the next port of call of Nicaragua. We arrive there in a few hours.

As those of you who sail Crystal know,  sea  days are special and yesterday was no exception.

A diverse set of lectures  covering  today's port of call, Brexit 2 and The Beach Boys  which  we  enjoyed and really appreciate the interactive TV which allowed us to watch them at our leisure yesterday.

Time for other activities which in  my case included running outside on the Promenade Deck and Paddle  Tennis in addition to some exercise in the Fitness Center.  I did  have a little mishap.  After playing Paddle Tennis for quite awhile I was charging the net when the ball came right at me and it ended up hitting my sunglasses and the force pushed the piece that sits on  my nose in.   😎I immediately  had a small bump and it hurt but  was smart enough to take  myself  out  on the  spot and with cold towels and ice put them  on that area.  The small bump stopped swelling and pretty much went away.   However, I do have  a small area with a  black eye which  will likely take a few  weeks to go away.   😎

Thehighlight for us of the day was seeing Jim Brochu perform Character Man.    Although  we  have sailed with Jim and Steve many times and seen  Jim  perform as well  as  give numerous  talks, it has obviously been way too long so  yesterday was  the first time we saw Character Man. As I mentioned in a separate thread it brought tears to our eyes.  Bravo, Jim.   Bravo.

Food continues to be terrific as it always is. I've posted a couple of photos from dinner last evening and the Wild Mushroom Tart was amazing.  Absolutely  delicious.

After dinner we attended the Crystal Society Reception.  The turnout was  far greater than I expected given some people were dining while others were getting  ready to watch the LSU/Clemson National Championship Football Game which started about 45 later.  You  could watch it on a big screen TV or in your room.

Ending the night on a high note, before going to sleep we set the clocks back one hour.

We arrive to San Juan Del Sur, Nicaragua in a few hours. We haven nothing planed so Anne Marie can continue to get better on the ship. I'll go out for a little bit.

That's it for now.

We are truly enjoying every minute on-board  and believe it or not are still running into people who have been on-board since we arrived in Miami.

AN UNEXPECTED  SEA DAY

Having  cruised for many years when Anne Marie  and I walked onto the verandah this morning  and felt the wind and looked at the white caps our prediction was the port stop would be cancelled.  Captain  Birger noted that the winds were at  42 knots  and gusting to 60.   The pilot had advised that by Noon  the winds were predicted to be significantly higher.

So today  becomes an unexpected sea day.

But all things  work out well.  Cruise Director Rick mentioned that by a little after 10:00 AM we would be getting a revised Reflections activity  program  to our room.  He also noted the  10:00 and 11:00 lectures added to the schedule.

The first one  at 10:00 by Bob  Ray  about guess who?????   No not  the  Who.   But  about the four lads from Liverpool.  Who could that be?  Yes, the Beatles.

At 11:00 Jim Brochu will give a talk about Fred Astaire.

This is Crystal at its finest.

A photo of the Regent Ship.

IMG_3723.thumb.jpeg.a99157982fa06132f71ea8cda0c680c5.jpeg

At  the conclusion of my run I found  this one  resting on the Promenade Deck.  Maybe taking a  snooze.

IMG_2151.thumb.jpeg.6dc8cc36ed9ddef3f031db6749e456fe.jpeg

By  the way it was so  windy I could  only run back and forth on one side  of  the ship.  If I tried to  run around the bow or aft of the ship I thought I  would  either  be blown  off the ship, lose my hat or lose one or both of  my AirPods.

And on the not so pretty sight, this is what my sports  injury looks like.   I know.   More than you might want to know.

I woke about nine to a voice telling me Port was cancel and etc.. really have no idea why they need to talk un my cabin about this. Not a way to wake up. Second time in two weeks.

i moved my nail app so I can do Zumba.

as entertainers were to fly to Mia today on their way home I really do not think it was a great day. Last year same four men were stuck in Africa getting home.  Good thing not to a other gig.  Last year it was to another gig.

By the time we hit Mexico and the beach I will be running off the ship.

I will have to learn how to find the Beatles lecture after Zumba and before spa app. Can I watch tomorrow .

it was very breezy at pool yesterday around 4 but never notice wind last night.

Former  Astronaut Scott Kelly left the other day.

Two entertainers who were to board today didn't make it on the ship.  They will need to catch up with us and hopefully come on board in our next port of call in Mexico.

Charity Lockhart who performs tonight as the Queen of Soul (Aretha Franklin songs) is on board but she had a suitcase of clothing which was supposed to come on board today and the suitcase didn't make it.

As they say the Show must go on so I am sure it will.

Tommy’s from Vox told me yesterday that they have a second show that the middle is different. Wish they would do another show.  They can easily take the place of the two entertainers.

Missing a suitcase always sucks but maybe she carries her dress in her carry on. Other entertainers carry  on some clothes for just in case.

Keith..you  seem to find the good source of info from suitcases to lost entertainers. To fly all the way down to turn around ..I bet to the states to Mexico. I would need two days sleeping even to see the stage.
