Did they fix Nieuw Amsterdam's azipod or is she sailing with one operational?

At 3 pm EST 26 Dec, I had the following online chat with HAL ...

12:00:10 [Angela] Welcome to Holland America Line. Chat service is available in English only. Please hold while we connect you to the next available agent...

12:00:26 [Angela] Thank you for contacting Holland America Line my name is Angela. How may I help you today?

12:00:40 [Angela] Hi

12:01:31 [NavArch64] When will the starboard azipod unit on Nieuw Amsterdam be repaired so that both propulsion units will be fully operational.

12:02:25 [Angela] May I have you verify your email address?

12:02:46 [NavArch64]  (deleted)

12:03:27 [Angela] Thank you.

12:05:22 [Angela] Nieuw Amsterdam has been repaired.

12:07:01 [NavArch64) When she left Nassau on her current voyage, she was only operating with her port azipod unit. When were the repairs completed?

12:09:00 [Angela] When 48 hours Dec 16 2019 ship was ready to sail.

12:11:14 [NavArch64] Nieuw Amsterdam went to the shipyard in Freeport and spent 4 days there before returning to Port Everglades without guests on Dec 20.

12:13:44 [Angela] Understand. The ship was repaired and Nieuw Amsterdam sailed on 21st with guest.

12:15:39 [NavArch64] But, Angela, on the 22nd departing Nassau, she was sailing with only the port azipod unit functioning.

12:16:38 [Angela] One moment while I inquire.

12:21:04 [Angela] Both azipods are working

12:21:43 [NavArch64] Thank you for checking, I appreciate your time with me.

12:22:51 [Customer] Session Disconnected

To me, this is still interesting ... the comment from Angela at 12:21:04 (PST) is pretty clear and definitive. But …...

Yes, when our TA inquired on our behalf, she was told the same thing, the azipod was repaired, both azipods are working fine, and our cruise and cabin will not be impacted by this.

Weird. Could they have been doing running repairs?

I suppose that the experts will tell us that it is impossible?

If marinetraffic.com is functioning properly, and NAdam is transmitting her GPS position as expected, she is 3 hours overdue at HMC. I am curious … where is she? (Of course, she may have turned off her AIS for some reason)

I am on this ship this week. Arrived on time at HMC as scheduled. No problems.

You do realize that marinetraffic depends on land based AIS stations (and line of sight VHF), and not all of the ones that marinetraffic has signed up (and they don't access every land AIS station) will stay online full time.  Nothing is showing at HMC except via satellite, so its anyone's guess which ships are there, unless you are silly enough to pay for their satellite service.  If I remember right, and I don't look there all the time, that part of the Bahamas tends to be a dead zone for AIS.

I would take whatever the CSR's say, even having gone to "supervisors", with a few grains of salt.  It may have been repaired, it wasn't at the start of the cruise.  Running repairs would depend on what failed.  If, as I've said in the past, based on the "loud bang" reported by those onboard, that it was a failure of the variable frequency drive that supplies power to the azipod,  then it could very easily be repaired underway.  Doing any mechanical repairs inside the pod, and those are limited, would require the pod shaft to be locked (causing a lot of drag, slowing the ship), and would more likely be done in ports of call where the shaft is not turning.

Good to know. I had heard one theory that it was a bearing failure!

This is very reassuring, thank you for the update. Hope your day at HMC is great.

How some of you posting in this thread must fancy yourselves....

Using the customer service chat to inquire about technical issues on a ship. Really.

Now marinetraffic.com says that NAdam arrived HMC 05:59 27 Dec (EST) … that conforms to the onboard report. It will be interesting to see if there are 2 tugs standing by for her in PEF tomorrow morning. If not, then the statement by Angela is confirmed … if so, then …. who knows?

Look for one tug to escort her from the sea buoy, that will be the defining condition, because that would be a USCG COTP requirement.

Perhaps @wesport could just post updated pictures of the wake and the display up in the Crow's Nest showing the azipod power so we could see if anything has changed since their original posts last weekend.

I would, but the ships internet is down and I am losing my T-Mobile signal as we are leaving the Bahamas. Don’t know if this will posr

Thanks. If you see this, what's your impression, have things changed since last weekend? Have you managed to find an officer who will tell you the truth about the situation?

There are 2 tugs meeting NAdam at the entrance to PEF. Gregg McAllister and Vicki McAllister. Very interesting.
