Corona virus RCI policy

You should add the word reported. Most experts think most are not reported.

More likely, reported due to severity.

Many people are likely getting minor symptoms, not a big deal, and get well.

It doesn't really work that way. It's like pregnancy, you either have it or not. The official reports should count all, but that government has form in under-reporting things (and in fact arrested people who initially reported this outbreak back in December).

That said, while I don't trust the accuracy of the official figures, I also don't see this as distinctly worse than the flu, which also kills many each year.

Read today (https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-china-51254523) that China believes that the virus spreads before symptoms are present and has an incubation period of up to 14 days.  If that information is correct, it's reasonable to expect to see some much more aggressive countermeasures in the region, as the virus is going to be more difficult to contain than first thought.

Singapore Cruise Society on FB is reporting that Spectrum is cancelled, also Costa and MSC. Can't find anything to confirm this though.

More people die from the flu than they have from Corona virus. How many of these "new virus" epidemics were anything to be concerned about?

According to Express UK, Royal canceled their first cruise due to the virus. Can anyone confirm?

“Royal Caribbean cancelled its January 27 sailing on cruise ship the Spectrum of the Seas, scheduled to depart from Shanghai.

"The decision was made to fully coordinate with disease prevention and ensure the health and safety of passengers and crews," Royal Caribbean said in a statement.”

I found this from USA Today but still can't see anything on RCL site. They seem to be keeping it very quiet. Imagine if this was an RCL ship anywhere else in the world, it would be all over this board!

I have another trip planned, but my plane has a layover in Beijing.  Hopefully they can get it contained before March....

On the German site that Scans the Seas. Under ships then Spectrum/current position it says it leaves in 9 hours.

The actual position of the ship will be in the photo after 9 hours

That's what the reports were on some well known Network news programs (NBC, CBS, etc.) this morning.

Seems China does not normally react this quickly ... so probably more cases than China has reported.

Weird that still nothing on RCI site :classic_unsure:

"All the luxury cruise liners operating in Shanghai suspended operations on Sunday, offering refunds or rescheduling, due to the coronavirus outbreak.

The Spectrum of the Seas with Royal Caribbean, Costa Atlantica, Costa Venezia, MSC Splendida and Piano Land with Astro Ocean Cruise have cancelled their departures from the International Cruise Terminal in Baoshan District.

"The decision was made to fully coordinate with disease prevention and ensure the health and safety of passengers and crews," the Royal Caribbean said in a statement.

Passengers can either get a full refund or change to other voyages between July 1, 2020 and May 31, 2021. Those who reschedule will receive a coupon of US$100 for each cabin.

Costa Cruises has suspended all operations from China until February 4, including the Costa Atlantica scheduled to depart Shanghai on Monday and the Costa Venezia on February 2.

Operations at other major Chinese ports have also been halted, including trips from Tianjin, Sanya and Shenzhen".

So where is Spectrum going to dock?

I’m assuming it will drop off current passengers as planned and just not pick any up. What’s real interesting is what will they do with an empty ship for a week and what’s the long term plan?

The Spectrum cruise is a short cruise with mainly Chinese passengers. There´s not even a roll call on here for this cruise. So it´s pretty likely that RCI posted a note only on the Chinese website.

There is no group travel allowed currently in China. So passenger groups aren´t able to travel (and Chinese prefer to travel in organized groups). Many large cities are quarantined - therefore no one can travel. The group travel ban includes all shore excursions for cruise ships on Mainland China.

Here´s an interesting read about the Costa Venezia returning to the port of Shenzhen yesterday.

The've mainly increased health and temperature screenings at the port. Unless you have a fever, then you might be taken off, or quarantined for a bit (also dependent on your travel history). But as of now, everything is still pretty normal. If you're worried, just wear a mask onboard and maybe bring extra hand sanitiser.

It takes a specialized mask to stop a virus. The kind you see most people wear is worthless. Also as discussed a million times, hand sanitizer does not kill viruses, just bacteria.

If Royal were to cancel or re route cruise because of this (start Singapore ends in hong kong) and we have flights booked with royal will they change them for me and for free. Additionally 2 of our group have a flight from hong kong booked independently would they just need to claim on their travel insurance?

Some do kill viruses e.g.Purcell vf481 but agree vast majority don't

I think if your flights are booked with RCL and they change the cruise you will be OK. We booked the whole package with one of the big UK cruise agents so don't know what would happen with our flights. Our flights are with BA so don't know if we would be able to deal directly with them. I'm thinking that if RCL cancel Hong Kong the most likely scenario is that they will change the itinerary slightly and return to Singapore.

That site uses location based on proposed routing/time - it may not be anywhere an actual location. For that, use a site like Marinetraffic.
