Annual Plans and Trip Cancle/Interup/Delay

Recommended Posts

In the InsureMyTrip discussion of Annual Plans is this language:

standard coverages in comprehensive travel insurance plans are usually not included (trip cancellation, trip interruption, and travel delay)

It doesn't take much effort to find annual plans that DO offer trip cancellation, trip interruption and travel delay coverage.  So the question is, why does InsureMyTrip take this position and presumably why doesn't InsureMyTrip offer annual Plans that include such coverage?  What am I missing?

Hi Cool Cruisers, the vast majority of our customers are choosing comprehensive travel insurance for individual trips. Since each trip is unique, our customers prefer a plan for each trip vs. an annual plan.

Example: you may want a cruise-specific travel insurance plan for a springtime voyage to Alaska, and then a comprehensive travel insurance plan that covers the entire family for a trip to Italy. For the Italy trip, you may choose a plan that comes with a higher emergency medical limit (since Original Medicare doesn't cover you abroad) whereas for your cruise to Alaska you wanted those inconvenience benefits in case your port of call was changed.

Some annual plans don't have trip cancellation coverage, some do. If you do purchase an annual plan from a travel insurance company, just be sure to look at any aggregate limits to make sure they meet your minimum requirements.  For example, an annual plan may only cover trip cancellation/interruption of $3,000 to $10,000 total for all trips taken within the year. So if you will be taking multiple expensive trips, that annual limit may not cover all your costs should something happen on multiple trips.

And sometimes you have to set the number of travelers up front, so if you will be taking some trips alone and then others with your family, you may still have to purchase single trip coverage for those that are not listed.
