14-Day Cape Horn & Strait of Magellan

Recommended Posts

Has anyone done this cruise?  Would you recommend it?

Is there any advantage as to which direction you do it?  Is it better to start in Buenos Aires or Santiago?

Looking for a replacement cruise since our 18 Day Diamond Princess cruise just got cancelled and have to use the Future Cruise Credit by 2/28/2021

We did this cruise in January 2019 on the Star.  I really enjoyed it. We went BA to Santiago though either way would be fine.  We spent 2 nights pre-cruise in BA. I really liked BA; lots to see.  Very affordable and that was before the latest currency crisis.  It should be even cheaper now.

Because of high seas, we missed the Falklands so we have a reason to go back.

Yes, same thoughts here. On Star Feb 2019. Santiago chili to B Aires. Loved Usushia and Stanley we took Patrick Watts 4x4 tour to Volunteer Zpoint to see penguins. A highlight of my travels.

We enjoyed 2 nights in Buenos Aires before boarding the ship which didn’t depart until the second day and we continued past Santiago to LA.

The 14 days between BA & Santiago cost about 25% more than the 17 days to LA.  For us that was more enjoyable than flying home from Santiago.  That might not be an option for you but being retired it worked great for us to extend our cruise & it was easier than flying home from Santiago.

We flew from GB to Santiago and cruised to Buenos Aires on Emerald Princess in January 2018. 3 days in Santiago and 3 days in BA. Our weather was fantastic..no rough seas, no rain. Had a wonderful cruise and would thoroughly recommend it .

We did this in the middle of our Buenos Aires 5 day pre-cruise stay. Has to be the best side tour we have ever done. over 500 hundred separate falls along with the main spill over.

If you transit the Beagle Canal suggest you book North facing balcony.  Glacier Views are spectacular.  We did not know but got really lucky.

Be advised only about half the cruises manage to circumnavigate Cape Horn.

Truly a great cruise.  In the Falkland suggest volunteer point for penguins.

Could you please explain this further?  We are booked on B2B cruises from Santiago to Buenos Aires and then on to Port Everglades in March 2021.  How can you do this without circumnavigating Cape Horn?

The actual Cape Horn is a rocky island south of the mainland. Weather permitting Princess, at least for our cruise, will actually circle Cape Horn (Isla Hornos) to afford views from all sides. The seas for us were rough but spectacular.   In bad weather, frequent, they just depart Ushuaia and head straight back north.

suggest google map to explain. O

Don't know if this is a possibility for you, but Coral Princess from Santiago (San Antonio) to Buenos Aires departing December 3 includes a total solar eclipse on December 14. Ship is almost sold out but there's a very popular Roll Call for the cruise with lots of private excursions being arranged in almost all the ports. If we can help with more information, email me at Julie.ginger.pepper@gmail.com

Happy travels!

This is a fantastic cruise!  We were on the Feb 2019 Star cruise from Santiago to Buenos Aires and thoroughly enjoyed the cruise.  We began with 3 pre-cruise days in Santiago which was a good introduction to South America.  Walking among the penguins in the Falkland Islands was a highlight of the cruise.    We booked an expedition cruise from Ushuaia to Antartica for December 2020 so we can actually step foot on the Seventh Continent.  Never thought about going to Antartica until we went on the Feb 2019 cruise!

Thank you all for your great feedback.  Unfortunately we're just not going to be able to fit this in before the cruise credit expires, so we just booked a 7-day California Coastal that fits in the timeframe we already had the Japan cruise booked for.  It pretty much ended up being a free cruise in a Club Class mini suite.  Thank you, Princess.. 👍

This cruise is on our bucket list though so this information is still very valuable.  Thanks again!
