Does anyone know the latest on the likelihood of Arcadia not visiting Shanghai or other Asian ports on her world cruise.? We are boarding in Sydney but haven’t heard anything.

Probably not. Cunard have rerouted QM2 to avoid Hong Kong and Cunard P&O are same company.

QM2 getting extra stop at Singapore instead.

We have friends on this cruise so have been following events. It will be interesting to see how P&O handle the visa situation as our friends were informed 2 weeks before the cruise that they needed full Chinese visas, which is a moot point, now they probably won't be going to China.

We booked excursions in Shanghai from the ship and visas are included. But very probably not going anyway but there are so many stops in Asia apart from China. Going to be interesting.Mystery tour!

Given the rate at which this is spreading I think you may find all stops in Asia are to be cancelled and they will just ship you back to the uk without stopping anywhere on route!!

Would love to stop in Darwin, Port Moresby, Mauritius avoiding Asia altogether.

A friend of ours currently on Emerald Princess doing a Hawaiian and South Pacific island cruise, reports that their 2 stops in the Samoan islands have been cancelled as Samoa has stopped all contact with the outside world due to Corona virus,

I read that.  Bad enough for the ones in a suite/balcony, but imagine that in an inside cabin (or even worse if you also have children with you).

Whether you have Coronavirus on board or not it seems highly likely that your cruise will be impacted regardless because as soon as someone presents with cold/flu symptoms the ship will be refused permission to disembark at whatever port it is currently visiting.  Overall just not a great time to be cruising imo.

Can confirm the following:

"Guests and crew who have visited mainland China (including Hubei Province) within the last 14 days will be denied boarding irrespective of any history of symptoms of respiratory illness. "

"Pre-Boarding screening will be conducted for all guests in all embarkation ports with further medical evaluation if necessary."

"All guests and crew who visit our onboard Medical Centre with symptoms of any respiratory illness will be risk assessed for coronavirus and action taken as necessary."

That last one is the interesting one and may hint at a way that cruise lines might be hoping to try and continue "business as normal".   It is plain as day to identify people who are aboard and are coughing and sneezing with colds and ILIs.   Yet the statement above concerns only those people who actually go and report to the medical centre . . . . .

Interested to know what people think of that.

Should the cruise line be very pro-active in approaching people with any displayed cold/flu symptoms anywhere on the ship and mandating quarantine whilst they are tested?

Oh and this also:

"in general if a port is missed we don't compensate and guests would need to claim through travel insurance. If we missed a port because we are advised not to dock, we will try to find an alternative but again would need to claim through travel insurance"

Just been on the news. 61 passengers now affected on Diamond Princess.

That's terrible.   And how many of them were perfectly fine and clear of the virus but have now effectively been forced to contract it as a result of being forcibly quarantined on a ship with confirmed cases?    Not a good time to be cruising imho.

Being quarantined in their cabins  with the air conditioning is a recipe for disaster.

Michelle said that if we were stuck in an inside cabin for 14 days, only one of us would be coming out...

They must be climbing the walls..

But what's the alternative?  Confined to their cabins or let off the ship to infect more on shore. Quarantine is quarantine whether on a cruise ship or in a hospital.

We too are joining Arcadia in Sydney - flying out of UK this weekend.  As you say - plenty of Australian ports to consider.   I find it frustrating that P&O have no news on their website and even when I managed to get through on the phone to them a few days ago they could still not tell us anything.  I'm wondering if Manila may also now be cancelled due to volcanic eruption fears !

Either way P&O must have a plan by now.

Apparently they are allowed onto the decks daily for fresh air.

Oh see I heard different.

One report said their dinner hadn't arrived so they poked their head out to be shouted back in by a member of staff patrolling the corridor...

Chinese whispers... No pun intended

Plenty of alternatives all better than being forcibly confined to a ship cabin with air con circulating between all cabins.

The easy solution is simply to take the currently unaffected passengers ashore and place them in a quarantine unit there which DOES NOT have the risks of air conditioning circulation, and wait the appropriate number of days to see if they were incubating the virus.

What you don't do is quarantine healthy people in with confirmed ill people.  That is lunacy.

How many of those 61 will die as a result of being forcibly confined with ill people?

I hope none.  They’re all being looked after in Japan.  The number won’t stay at 61 though, I’m sure, and it’s not a good situation for anybody.
