NY Ban Agaisnt Gatherings of more than 500 - Cruise Impact?

Recommended Posts

The ban is specifically for “congregate spaces” that have an occupancy of 500 people or more, meaning that places with more divided areas — like office buildings or movie theaters — won’t be affected by the limits.

Governor Cuomo’s announcement doesn’t include things like New York City’s subway and bus public transit systems, the New York public school system, hospitals, or nursing homes, all of which will remain open for now.

why is something like the NYC subway less likely to spread this than cruise ships? ive seen stats a few mil a day use the system. no cruise ship is that big. it just seems like more of the proverbial petri dish than the largest cruise ship. and if youve been in the stations you know its not the most well ventilated sometimes

Tell that to all the people on the other thread yelling at those of us who still plan to go on our cruises this weekend.

The governor of Maryland just declared a state of emergency and closed the port of baltimore effectively immediately for all outgoing cruises.  Carnival  and Royal have ships that homeport there. Who knows if other states will follow suit ?

It isn't that the NYC subway is less likely to spread the virus, it's that shutting down mass transit would cripple the city. People wouldn't be able to go to work, to medical appointments, etc.

You have to do a risk-benefit assessment and the negative consequences of a mass transit shutdown right now are enormous.  Taking a  cruise is a leisure activity, not a necessity.

Its not. That’s why I don’t understand these half measures. Either quarantine everyone for a few weeks, or don’t. All these government officials are doing is making everyone panic. It’s not productive.

Because people are going to travel no matter how much fear mongering that there is. And NYC doesn't want to lose billions of dollars in revenue and basically stop everyone from going to work by shutting down all transit stations.

You have a choice, go on a cruise with 5000 people, 1 of whom MAY have the virus. And spend a lot of time around the same people.

OR

You can stay in NYC and travel the transit system with 1,000,000 PLUS different people every day,  any one of whom may be infected.

Statistically which do you think is more likely to expose you to the virus?

it is because it goal isn't to quarantine.  The goal is to take reasonable measures do some prevention and to slow down how quickly it spreads.  This helps allow hospitals to treat those who are ill.  Without some measures, medical facilities would be flooded and unable to treat everyone, leading to further sicknesses and death.  Quarantining everyone for two weeks won't eliminate this disease.  It will still pop up.

Public officials (perhaps some more than others) are trying to carefully balance health, economics, individual freedoms, etc. It seems to me a very difficult time to be a public official.
