ITALIAN SHIPYARD ON PAUSE

The company doing the refit of the Breeze in Palermo has announced that it is closing all of its shipyards until March 29 in response to the Coronavirus crisis in Italy. Although the Palermo facility is not specifically mentioned, I assume it will be impacted further delaying the Breeze and Legend refits.

With the hiatus on all sailing, this new development is somewhat academic but it may eventually impact the initial Breeze sailings scheduled for June.

Fincantieri said the following in it press release:  " ...... the company decided to suspend production activities at the Italian sites of Fincantieri SpA. From March 16 to March 29,....", so it would appear that Palermo is a part of the shutdown.  It also said that "..... its domestic and foreign customers, which can be assured that, once the situation is normalized, the following ship deliveries will be performed in compliance with the contractual deadlines."   A bit confusing as there was no "following" ship delivery list, but Breeze is affected.

I "think" that if and when it is safe to cruise, and if they can hang in, Windstar and the other "small" cruise lines will get more business than they can handle.  I hope we are not priced out of that market.
