Predict when cruising will start again post-Coronavirus

Recommended Posts

Good to hear the sensible hygiene measures at the small independent school.

Prudent at anytime. amazed to read elsewhere some schools did not have soap and other basic hygiene items.

Some were saying it was because fears children would eat or slip on soap, remarkable.

Some schools overseas were having hourly supervised handwashing.

Anywhere where people congregate there will be risks of infection.

difficult choices.

Have seen some arguments pro keeping schools open are around maintaining people in work, economic and social reasons. peace of mind means people who can will make their own choices. Some will not have that privilege.

You seem to think we want an exemption for cruising, we don't. What we want is a gradual lifting of restrictions (in a safe and considered method) and by August/September some international restrictions would be lifted, so by October/November we just want cruise ships to be among the next steps.

The problem is that most of the crews come from Indonesia and the Philippines, which are two countries which have been hard hit by coronavirus and don't have it under control.  Many of the ships' officers are Italian, with Italy being another hard hit nation.

There's a decent chance that NZ will open up to us, by flying, around September or (more likely) October.  Travel to other countries, which have largely beaten CV-19 into submission, will probably follow - with the South Pacific island nations being the first in the queue.

There is zero chance of us opening the borders to countries like Indonesia/Philippines, which don't have it under control, in anything like that timeframe.  In order to get the crews here, the Aus Govt would need to create exemptions, allowing them into the country.  That's not going to happen.  Without exemptions, cruising in Australia probably doesn't happen until late-2021 at the earliest.

Cruising will be one of the last industries the Govt allows to re-start when this is done & dusted.  It certainly won't be one of the first.  It won't be re-starting this year.

"There is zero chance of us opening the borders to countries like Indonesia/Philippines, which don't have it under control" as opposed to the US of A which has done such a great job? and could we honestly say they have it under control?

That maybe so or not re cruising into/out of ports in oz.

However many of us join cruise ships overseas not from oz ports.

This is particularly the case for European river cruising which we have done many times and love.

Crew are from many countries depending on cruise line and catering/hospitality contracts.

Currently there are multiple ships with thousands of crew on board awaiting some resolution. Given the pandemic and dire situation some have said they feel safer on board than if they were on land in their home countries.

It depends on who you listen to. I have no plans on visiting the USA.

Man, you are really starting to press a nerve.

It would seem you think, the rest of the world should let you in but of course "those people" should never be allowed in your country. Indonesia/Philippines bad...USA good. Give it a rest.

Why should New Zealand let you in? And why would the South Pacific Islands be in a queue?

You seem to have definite views on who should be let in and who should be kept out. It's okay for a Battalion of Troops from the largest outbreak in the world (where there is no plan and the outbreak is not even close to being controlled) but those from Indonesia/Philippines they must be kept out.

Lucky thing for the thousands of Australians who make their living making people from different places welcome, that you aren't in charge.

Because of the talk of the trans Tasman bubble.

Vader is not expressing their own opinion, but  the perceptions that are around here in Australia at the moment, including the politicians who will be making these decisions, which is based on how different countries have been coping. NZ and Australia are pretty much at the same place in terms of 'the curve'. It's nothing to do with them letting us in. It's just as much about them coming to Australia as it is about  Australians going to NZ.

It really feels as if Vader is expressing his/her own opinion and very definite opinions at that which do not neccessarily reflect other Australians' opinions. The statements being made by Vader make it sound as if what they are saying is correct and is what is going to happen. I am finding Vader's posts very grating.

Who said we were opening the borders to the USA?  Yanks will be waiting just as long as the Indonesians, possibly even longer.

We're not going anywhere, and they're not coming in.  As thing stand, Australians are not allowed to leave the country (with few exceptions), and nobody other than citizens and permanent residents are coming in (once again, with a few notable exceptions).

Australia & NZ are already talking about the introduction of a "Trans Tasman Bubble", which will see Australians able to fly to NZ (and vice versa) without the need for quarantine.  Australia & NZ have long had a special relationship, and both have squashed CV-19 flat.  This is what will allow citizens of these two countries to travel between them.  The likely timeframe on this is September of (more likely) October.

The South Pacific island nations' economies are massively dependent upon tourism, and they have either no CV-19 cases or (like Australia) they've squashed it flat.  NZ, in particular, has a very close relationship with these countries - even closer than Australia's.  It is likely that the TTB will be expanded to include these countries, and they are clearly the next in line when Australia starts to relax its border restrictions.

Like it or not, Defence is seen as an Essential part of Government, and the Govt has decided to allow this battalion of troops into the country as a result.  These soldiers do not represent a threat to the Australian community, because they are being quarantined on barracks, and are not being exposed to the Australian population.  We have a PM who is a Rugby League nut, which is the primary reason why a football team from NZ is being allowed into the country before the formation of the TTB.  These are exceptions.  Cruising is the antithesis of Essential, and there's not a snowball's chance in Hell of crews being given exemptions in the way that the US troops and NZ footballers have been.

The Australian Government, both PM and CMO, have been very clear.  We're not re-opening our borders until we can be sure that doing so will not reintroduce CV-19 back into the Australian community.  That means that it could be a long time before we allow people into the country, from places where CV-19 has not been stopped - and that includes the USA, Indonesia and Philippines.  We're talking years, not months.

Am I suggesting that Australia is special, or that Australians should be treated differently?  Absolutely not.  This goes both ways.  Australia will not accept visitors from countries where CV-19 remains active, and it will also not allow its citizens to travel to those countries.

Apologies.  I find these delusional "we're all going cruising in a few months" posts equally grating.  I like optimism, but having people from Canada attempting to tell us when the Australian Govt will (or should) allow people from CV-19 active countries into Australia is just plain ludicrous.

The Australian Govt has been very clear.  We're not opening the borders until we can be sure that the people coming in will not be bringing CV-19 in with them.  If that means we don't open the borders until 2021 or 2022, then we'll just have to learn to adapt to life without overseas tourists feeding into our economy for a while.

The Diamond & Ruby Princess disasters have really put the Govt offside, when it comes to the cruising industry.  Ruby Princess in particular has ensured that the Cruising industry is right at the very back of the "we must get this open" list, and there is no way the Govt will be lifting a finger to help get things moving.

Well tune into channel 9 news tonight at 6pm because I just saw them mention on a promo when we will be travelling in the Pacific again.

None of which matters if a quarantine period is in place.

2500 US troops were let in for a non essential, in 6 months time, I think anyone from nearly anywhere will be allowed as long as a quarantine period is observed first.

OK so on the news tonight, in Europe there is the proposal to have zones created  with countries with similar COVID-19 statistics open to each other for travel - green zones and red zones.

They then mentioned the NZ/Australia with bubble with "Fiji keen to join".

Of course, cruising may be excluded due to the crew, unless they are quarantined and tested first, it should be possible.

Step 1: Exemption to enter country.

Step 2: 2 weeks quarantine

Step 1 isn't happening, so step 2 is irrelevant.

You still seem to be thinking they need exemptions, that would be the case now if they wanted to come but not the case in 6 months time. Start thinking ahead, we will not be in these restrictions for long.

What are they doing here that the ones they replaced couldn't do. Nothing, just rotation that could have been put off for another month or so. That is non essential.

Your opinion of what is essential is largely irrelevant.  The Govt deemed them to be essential.

Nobody is deeming cruising to be essential.

In 6 months time they will still need exemptions, as they're coming from high risk countries.  The only countries where citizens are likely to be able to travel to/from Australia in that timeframe are NZ and the South Pacific islands.  Possibly low risk countries in Asia, such as Taiwan & Vietnam, which have squashed CV-19 as effectively as Aus & NZ.  High risk countries, such as Indonesia, USA, Philippines, will be waiting a lot longer - probably 2022.

We are going to have these restrictions for as long as it takes, in order to prevent CV-19 from returning to Australian shores.  The Aus Govt will not compromise on that.

Apparently Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia have already opened their borders to each other, which makes sense has they share a lot of their economies with each other. Unfortunately Australia maybe will be dragging their feet with the Trans Tasman Bubble as they say it won't be as beneficial to Australia as it will be to NZ or Fiji so the Australian government is not making it a priority.

I'm not saying just let people in, nor am I "delusional" that we will be cruising "in a couple of months"

Your Government has allowed a whole Battalion of people from the worst outbreak in the world into your country (don't use the ridiculous "national security" cop out that is so common in the USA) It is a troop rotation, oh well just extend the tour of those already in Australia, they're safer in Australia. Just because they are "quarantined on their base, doesn't mean they're not in contact with civilians. I doubt that your Government would allow a base anywhere in Australia without civilian personnel. Canada even had civilians on the ground in Afghanistan. So those quarantined troops, from the largest outbreak in the world, will be in contact with Australians.

I would suggest that in your myopic view "We're not opening the borders until we can be sure that the people coming in will not be bringing CV-19 with them" then you will never open the borders, because really that "assurance" is indeed impossible.

It really doesn't matter how big of a footy fan your PM is, he might want to tread lightly with the foreign teams because if something happens there he wears it personally.
