We thought about moving there around 30 years ago as well, heard Gut wasn't going there anymore, so went to Adelaide instead.

My sister and her family moved there about 30 years ago!😀

It was ' a thing' here In Sydney around that time for people to move to Adelaide or Tassie in order to 'get ahead'. Cost of living in Sydney was high, and property prices were almost impossible for the average person. I know some who left at that time, and some who came back to get work. So for some the dream didn't work out.

I have enjoyed visits to both, but never have thought to relocate there.

I know about a dozen people who moved to tassie 10-15 years ago .

You could sell your house in western Sydney and buy 2 or 3 houses.

Most had to move back to the mainland because of work or health reasons.
There just wasn’t any specialists there and the locals look after the jobs for their self.

Interesting article Chili. I found it ironic that they seemed sympathetic to the "Hard hit tourism industry in Queensland" and didn't mention that it was exacerbated by Queensland's own border closure to other Australians let alone foreigners.

The tourism industry in Queensland which is hard hit is because international travellers are banned from Australia.  Most Australians don't travel to the tropics in summer, cyclone season. The tourism industry in Queensland which cater to locals is doing well.  We recently booked accommodation at Lady Elliot Island in Queensland and got the last cabin, in off peak season.

Thanks Marion, I think my point was more about all the talk from Australians on these threads that they would have travelled to Queensland and spent money there if they could be sure they could go and come home without a snap border closure with no notice. I'm afraid you can't turn business away by being erratic with border closers and then complain about lost business. Of course I'm 12,000 kms away, but I don't think you have to be Australian to see the irony here.

I would have gone Lyle, but the NSW/Qld border was closed at times, missed out on Christmas with family. Queen Anna, the Premier of Qld has sent a lot of people in the tourist/hospital industry broke. Lost their jobs, lost their houses, etc, etc.

So in the past 8 months I have had half a dozen mini road trips around NSW, supporting the folk out there and devouring a few of these...lol

My daughters just did a month trip in a campervan in Australia. They had to check border closures and hotspots daily and adapt their travel plans accordingly to Tasmania, Victoria and Greater Sydney, New South Wales, because of coronavirus outbreaks.  They managed to have a wonderful holiday in regional and rural New South Wales, despite the lockdowns and hotspots, and spread their money around in areas, which needed it.

I'm thinking that many who live south of the Queensland border would normally have been visiting warmer climes in the N hemisphere, during our winter, and would have been looking at Queensland as an alternative. We used to go to Queensland for (school) holidays in Aug/Sep. Too hot in summer. We would hit the beaches on the Sunshine Coast and wonder why the surfers were wearing wet suits.

Millions of visitors would normally be flying in to Qld from China and Japan during northern winter - snow birds? Even a small place like Cairns, I believe, had direct flights from Asia.

A lot of the area around North Queensland are geared up for the Japanese and other overseas tourists.

For me it was escaping the Sydney Traffic, I was spending 4 hours or more a day in it as I lived out West.

I can understand that. I'm still out here in Penrith, and fortunately work local, but had two stints between '81-'87 when I got promoted to HO at Annandale. Left home at 6am and got home pretty well at 6pm with the traffic, sometimes later. Not something enjoyable or good for work/life balance. Now only 4sets of lights between home & work 🙂

Real Estate Agents on the Sunshine Coast and the Gold Coast can't keep up with the demand for houses.  With people working from home due to covid, they are realising how much time they wasted travelling to and fro work in Sydney and Melbourne.

The traffic on the Gold coast is horrendous as well, at least the tram has somewhat alleviated it .

Same is happening up our way - but it has more to do with those from Southern state capital cities trying to escape the OTT Lockdowns. We have absolutely No rental properties available at all and they are still coming. Mackay only has a population of 100k so it’s quite daunting and I hear Townsville and Cairns are much the same. Probably happening all over Aus. The city dwellers are heading for the bush!!

Friends of ours bought a house in Mackay a couple of years ago, mainly because their daughter and her family live in a small inland town where daughter is a teacher. They get to see them more often when they are in Mackay, plus daughter and family have a place to go for weekends. Our friends kept their apartment in Sydney as well and their plan was to spend winter in Mackay and summer in Sydney, however I think Mackay is proving better for them while Covid is around. We had hoped to drive up there last year to visit them but the outbreaks and border closures killed off that plan. Maybe we'll get there later this year.

Mackay is much nicer than people imagine. I would recommend thinking about our Winter for your visit tho, right now we are having 33deg days but it’s the 90% humidity that is the killer.

So I've heard. That's why our friends head back to Sydney in summer although I think they're currently in Mackay as they weren't able to go there for Christmas with their famiy as originally planned.

We'd look at August/September if we did come up your way.

Great time of year usually doesn’t rain a lot then.

Well we are going to take a cruise on the Clyde. Just booked 4 nights in Batemen's Bay 15-19th March. Look out Uncle Les, we are coming to town 🙂 I'm looking forward to some of that tucker you've been posting about. I see we can also do a cruise from Narooma, so maybe we will have a real cruising holiday again. Haven't been on a boat/ship since Aug 2019 in Fiji - maybe will have to take a trip on the local paddlesteamer here - the Nepean Belle, just to get our sea legs again 🙂
