Blimey, wish I was a vet in another life.In Italy my Mrs found a lump in her breast.Top specialist from Milan, mammogram, ultrasound all put on a disc with report for NHS.120 Euro.Turned out to be a cyst.Antibiotics for a cat 30Euro,same ones for a human 7Euro,lol.

Advise any children to study and become a vet.

The vet practice is expanding shortly l’m not surprised at what they charge!!

Our other dog had an MRI a few years ago, that was £1200. Then she had a growth removed in between her toes £684. I think the practice is expanding on what I pay alone!!

I wouldn’t see them suffer though and would pay anything for them

It's a long time since we had a dog,  but when our rescue greyhound broke a leg chasing a squirrel, if it had not been for our pet insurance we would have been bankrupt!

Does insurance not cover some of the staggering  costs mentioned?

Not long after we had Charlie, our Wheaten Terrier, he contracted gastro enteritis. Whilst being treated at Vet hospital, they found inflammation between 2 discs in his spine. MRI confirmed it. The £4+K bill was covered by the insurance we took out when we bought him. Absolutely fine now, apart from allergy to certain food and regular bouts of insanity, but it could have ended so differently.
Message for the day is to buy a good pet insurance policy as soon as you give a home to any pet (maybe not needed for a goldfish). Policies aren’t cheap but as with all insurances, you notice them most if you have to make a claim.

My husband was the same but thankfully his enthusiasm for checking every single time something is switched on has diminished.

When it came at first he was around the house with the remote box watching the metre when we used anything. He had heart palpitations at the cost of my hair dryer (he is folically challenged so does not require that particular bit of kit). He is now also a complete convert to hanging washing out on the line, which I always did anyway, having watched how fast the metre goes when the tumble dryer is on.

He used to laugh at my old fashioned ropes / clothes horse under the gazebo regime with the tumble dryer for when things were needed quickly or it was too damp out to be any use for drying. Not now, now it is an instrument of the devil to be used only in the upmost case of dire need.

Joking aside thankfully we don’t need to worry about paying the bills but don’t let that stop a Scotsman from feeling the pain of spending any unnecessary money. Post cop 26 he now also thinks he is being very green and virtue signals every time the towels are out on the line.

I like the Apollo 13 analogy, I may just put the film on and make the direct comparison 😈

Your husband sounds like he is on the same wavelength as me!

We've never owned a tumble dryer.  Truly the devil's instrument.

I had pet insurance with a well known company. I think it was around £40 per month. After about 6 six years my cat became ill and was treated at the vets and she had an X-ray which cost quite a lot. The insurance company wouldn’t pay the first £200. I was quite annoyed by this as they had around £3000 of my money. I subsequently cancelled the policy and opened a post office account and paid £50 a month into it. Last year my cat was quite poorly and the treatment cost over a £1000. Cassie had more than £2000 in her account so it was well covered. I wouldn’t buy pet insurance again. I know vet bills can be very high but over the years, having had many cats, they have had a fortune out of me whereas I have not claimed anything like that amount.

We have been thinking about having a smart meter but undecided still not convinced they are any good and the mither in having one fitted.

Maybe I'm a dinosaur (and yes, I know I'm leaving myself wide open here for the comments from a certain few😁) or just a technophobe, but I would much rather trust my own readings.

Avril, Nothing stops you from reading a smart meter, but for electric the in house gadget should be giving you the same info. Not sure what SMET2 meters show for gas, but our SMET1 meter in house gadget at our old house only showed kWh  whereas the meter normally shows as cu ft.

Now that we live in an apartment I understand there can be issues if you want to have smart meters installed, but as our meters are outside I would  quite like to have smart meters.

I’d never had a tumble dryer before but the previous owners of the property I moved into 4 months ago left me their tumble dryer (no charge) and I have to say I love it especially for towels and bed linen. I will only use it in the winter as everything can dry in the garden when it warms up.
As for smart meters - I hate them too as always said no when pressured to have one installed, but one was already here……. I’m leaving it on and in place tho.

Nor do we.Clothes horse in front of the dehumidifier if it's raining works wonders.

I do the same Avril ,just send them to Mr Eon next online which is no hardship just the same

as if we had a smart meter I would track my spending as with anything .

Half an hour ago I had a letter drop through our door , it was off our cars breakdown cover .

Let me read you part of it .." Dear Mr Kalos thank you for having cover with us and not using us at all this year ! Now as a way of thanks we would like to renew your policy for another year by increasing the cost by £26 ,we hope you are happy and phone us very soon for this offer":classic_wacko:

Five minutes later same company ,same policy for almost £3 more than last year .Maybe it's just me but nowt gets out my bank account without me vetting it first .I have no time for dirty words like Auto Renew :classic_ohmy::classic_unsure:

Off to check my meter before we put the kettle on , remember save energy by laying on the settee all day :classic_unsure::classic_wink:  Stay safe :classic_love:

On my second smart meter, wouldn't be without it. I can manage my electricity and gas online with OVO and got lucky when I signed up to a 2 year fixed rate last August. The cost now is mind blowing.

I think a lot of people only got them (us included) because you got a special deal. The fuel companies were under pressure to get them installed and had targets to meet, the dates for installation have been pushed back at least once. I have to say the new meters we had fitted by BG were smaller and tidier than the old ones. Now we are with EDF our smart meter won't work and EDF don't seem bothered about giving us a new one and we are not that bothered about getting one either. Plus you do have to actually use electricity to power them.

I know John, but the problem is, I would always be reading it. My way and I only know how much I've used when I get the bill.

Ignorance is bliss😉

Sounds familiar. We have smart meter for gas and electric from Ovo and a similar 2 year fix which sadly ends in July. Smart meter is great. For example, today we have so far used £2.33 on gas and electric including daily service charge. It does make us aware of the cost which encourages us to try to reduce our consumption.

nope.

If you use them correctly they are perfect in every way.

.

I will admit that I had my dryer years ago, so not as up-to-date as they are now, and found that it tightened cotton fibres. I stopped using it and never missed it.

We had smart electric and gas meters fitted in September 2020 but the fitter couldn't get the gas meter to connect. A year later an engineer came back to connect it but said that it was defective and we would be contacted for another one to be fitted, haven't heard anything since and that was 5 months ago.I'm not going to chase them up as I couldn't get the in house display device to work anyway!
