How are things where YOU are? (in relation to the Corona Virus)

Recommended Posts

Spoke with someone who went to the footy on monday night and wore a mask.

She said it was a very cold night but the mask seemed to make her hot and uncomfortable.

Her son had a mask with a valve that let the hot air/breath out and it was more comfortable.

God knows.

Also read that the masks with the valves are not ideal as covid can escape thru the valve?

Health minister said on radio they were checking the waste treatment works for evidence of covid  community transmission. It must be excreted via feaces or urine?

Mind boggling how that sort of potential transmission person to person will be managed. Masks will not be the whole story. Gloves. Hand washing. Take extra care using public toilets.

I've been experimenting with making cloth masks today.

The first one, based on measurements from a US website, was a too small even for me.

The second one, based on 25cm x 25cms which I'd seen online a couple of times, was too big for me but DH likes it so his will all be that size.

Then I split the difference and did one 23.5cm x 23.5cm and that will be perfect for once I adjust the length of the elastic, it's a bit loose at the moment.

This is my one, DH's has blue fabric as the outer layer.

Wow impressive! What a pretty fabric.

They're actually very easy once you figure out the best way to make them. The hardest part is getting the pleats nice and even.

I used cotton quilting fabric as the outer layer as there is such a great choice of colours and designs in quilting fabrics. The middle layer is polycotton, and the inside layer is cotton jersey which should be more absorbent than plain cotton although it might get a bit annoying. I used a cut down pipecleaner for the metal strip. The only problem is getting the right sized elastic. I went to four stores yesterday and the narrowest I could get was 9mm which will be too big. I had some 5mm black elastic which I've used and even that is a bit big. I bought some hair elastic, like hat elastic but thicker (and more expensive) so will try that next. I tried Lincraft and Spotlight online but they are out of 3mm elastic.

I saw this youtube video re glasses and a possible solution for fogging that might be helpful.

Possum52's idea of glasses sitting on top of the mask edge is another idea that I have heard helps.

Someone sent me this as an idea for drinking with a mask.

I am not a fan of pleats, it just increases the fabric.

.

Not in this case. The pleats pull out so the mask curves under your chin. The other style is where the elastic is threaded through each side then gathered. Same amount of fabric for both.

I wonder if the cruise lines will issue masks to pax, when the ships come in. Complimentary, or charge the mask to your on board account. BYO masks on board?  Any gratuity like they charge for your byo wine?  Pehaps masks will be the prizes at on board trivia, bingo etc. something to ponder on my friends.

I'm not really interesting in cruising if masks have to be worn in public spaces. It would be impossible to wear one at the bars, even trivia would be awkward wearing masks. The theatre is one area where they might be useful and, luckily, the shows are short. And no way would I want to wear a mask around the pool or in the Sanctuary. Casino? I never go there so I don't care.

Same here and if they only permit 400 pax into the 800 seat theatre and 60 into a 120 pax tender, it will be a total disaster. And what about the shorex buses, limited transport infrastructure at most ports, if they reduce capacity many pax will miss out on tours, the issues go on and on, trivia, bingo, all impacted upon re spacing.

I don't think the theatre numbers, trivia etc, and even tendering will be an issue as the will have to reduce the number of passengers anyway. Shorex buses could have half the number of passengers too. But having to wear masks too often and for too long would be a deal breaker for me. I'm happy to wear one for short periods but not all day.

And then the next questions are who provides the masks and how are they disposed of safely?

I made 2 each of these today for my granddaughters.  The older one might wear hers but doubt the baby (not quite 2 years) would want to wear hers.  Children under 12 (? I think) are exempt.

Hope they like them.  Will post them off first thing in the morning.

Very cute! There are some gorgeous fabrics like that for making kids masks which might encourage them to wear them, at least for a little while when out.

As it's for safety, and assuming it's a requirement, they'd be complimentary. Last thing they'd do is turn away or have an argument with a customer for something they require.

Not like lanyards which are optional.

I would not worry Les . There won’t be any cruising if masks are a requirement .

And makes them even trickier to iron.😉

What sort of mask are you wearing? If it's a disposable one it should have a thin metal strip at the top which you press around your nose so the mask is shaped closer there. This stops your glasses fogging.

Great in theory, fails in practice.

Had to go out to the chemist this morning so I tried that hack with a folded tissue in the youtube clip that Frantic36 posted.  It worked!  No fogging of my specs and it was quite comfortable to wear.  So a big thank you to Frantic for the link - you've made my day! 😀

I'm sure Ruby and Grace will love the cute masks you made for them.  I saw a presenter on ABC News Breakfast this morning put on a mask with a folded tissue, which she said stopped fogging of glasses.  Glad it worked for you.  My daughter has bought some pleated cloth masks made by a local lady, in case Queenslanders have to wear masks in the future.

Shock horror Queensland is not included in Tasmania travel bubble with WA, SA, and NT.  Is there something I don't know about the spread of the virus in Queensland?

They might be upset that you are letting in people from NSW.

I knew we shouldn't have reopened the NSW/Qld border, which has caused no end of trouble to locals ever since.

Latest restriction reintroduced today is patrons must now sit down again in pubs, etc., no more standing up at the bar.

Some of the staff  here in the hospital run some tape along the top of the mask attaching to their skin.

No fogging for them.

And just as a curiosity, the only people not wearing masks are the patients.
