I heard a bright outlook from NCL's CEO disputing sour media reports. NCL secured $billions from realistic non-govt investors, altho they still have to manage money including credits wisely. Bookings are strong and the credits were a popular choice. The one year deal doesn't mean you have to cruise that year, just apply it to a cruise the following year. NCL never had bad health problem and I think we shouldn't take sensationalist media scares overly seriously.

 

One question is what if you use new generous cancellation policies on a reservation paid for by credits - do they further extend the expiration date? I ploughed more than needed credits into a down payment in hopes of the expiration getting extended if they cancelled me.

 

In Hawaii, there are so few sick that doctors and clinics are going broke in the shutdown. Everybody maybe needlessly going broke except for an elite with sweetheart arrangements. Probably many more will emigrate to mainland than last year. Mass releases of prisoners happened for no reason (no sickness there) and they have been murdering and robbing. Very hard to get some foods and supplies except from companies foolish enough to allow free shipping ($78 waived to air freight TP to me for instance).

We, too, purchased $$ credits for future cruises on NCL. At the same time, we also purchased 10 deposits for future cruises. It was a lot of money but being dedicated to NCL for many years we knew we would use these benefits. We have 4 deposits and $1,000 credit $$ remaining which expire this year. We were booking a TA on Epic for Nov 2021 and wanted to use the remaining benefits. Bottom line: both of these benefits (that we paid for) are now worthless. Our NCL cruise consultant told us she would have to submit an approval for us to use the credit $$ and the remaining deposits for the cruise; we would have to go ahead and pay the deposits for both suites we wanted ($3,000) and *IF* corporate approved using the deposits we had remaining it would be applied as an onboard credit for the cruise --- $200.00 for each suite, which means NCL changed these deposits to be worth only $100.00 each!

I submitted an online complaint through the NCL website to open a case about this, and submitted copies of the paperwork we received when we purchased these benefits. Absolutely no wording whatsoever on restrictions or limitations or acts of God. All we had to do, according to what we had received at the time, was to book a cruise before the expiration dates.

This smacks of NCL doing a major cash grab right now. We did not book the cruise and we are resigned to the fact we will lose the remaining benefits we had purchased. I personally do not think NCL is going to survive despite their securing add'l operating funds. There is no way I would give NCL a dime right now and I would urge others to not hand over any money (including credit card charges) unless it's money you can afford to lose or don't need returned soon.

I would suggest you submit an online complaint to open a case and request a refund. If NCL sails into bankruptcy (pun intended) at the very least you have a case number to file with the BK court. I highly doubt you will receive a cash refund from NCL.

Well, I'm going to attempt to take this thread back to what it was intended. As the title says, it's about how we're doing in our areas.  Please join in the conversation in an appropriate and more desirable way.   

 

I'm very happy right now! My area, Niagara Region, is finally going to be allowed to open the door a little further.  We'll be able to go to our favourite indoor malls, dine out (literally, outdoor seating only) at our favourite restaurants/bars, get our hair cut (yay) and visit our families in groups of a select 10 people.

  

Wonderful news for me as well as many others in my area.  

 

Our numbers here have been very good, only 1 new case of C-19 in the last week and while our province has seen more deaths due to this horrid disease, we seem to be getting a grip on the spread. Unfortunately, over 80% of our deaths have been in LTC homes.  Many seniors have lost the battle, very sad. May they all find peace and their families find forgiveness in their hearts.  

 

Anyway, for most of us, it's been a fight which many continue to engage.  We'll win eventually.

Asking how things are in our area? Only going out for shopping once a week. Had take out food 3 times since covid19 or March 2020. Last cruise ncl Bliss got off in NYC February 16. Feeling blessed we dodged the virus. Enjoyed Ncl gem 14 nights October 2019. Glad we enjoyed our cruise and lesson is go when you can.

Now June 16, 2020.In New England each state is different. Massachusetts high covid19 rate and deaths are 3rd highest in USA. Limited openings. Take out or Outdoor only eating. Many restaurants staying closed. Mask are mandatory.

New Hampshire more reopened. Maine has beaches reopened but might be for residents only. Quarantine of 14 days recommended for visiting. Connecticut a little more reopening than Mass. Rhode Island allows out of state visiting to beaches. Vermont a little different too, recent spike in covid19 cases after reopening somewhat.

Relatives in Arizona were excited about lifting restrictions and now a spike in cases. More cautious now. Same thing for California. Colorado seems to be cautious.

5 relatives and friends of our family have passed due to covid19. One young friend of daughter from college has passed too age 30’s.

History of 1918 Spanish flu pandemic might be repeated in USA.  Second wave of covid19 this fall.

Hello, I live in the midwest (Indiana) in a small town about 40 miles from Indianapolis.  I wanted to give a different perspective that you will hear on the news.  A lot of the US isn't anywhere nearly like the media talks about. Most of the big news media comes from New York and we are NOTHING like NY! We have dozens of cases instead of tens of thousands. Our businesses are almost all open now and gearing toward full capacity in July. Haven't seen much of an uptick since the re-opening. Just want to give a different perspective from what is shown in the news.

We live in Southern California. We traveled to AZ June 1-5. Many in AZ without masks, wow! Now AZ leads the world in COVID-19 cases?! Sad to not be visiting grandchildren in HI, WA, and Los Angeles. Happy to be able to shop every 2 weeks, stay at home and wear masks. Today, the Guv ordered masks everywhere.

Hi All,

 

Checking in here from Washington, DC. We are supposed to go into Phase 2 tomorrow (06.22.2020), however cases are on the rise, I believe due to the protests (very few people have worn masks) which have been continuing for the past four weeks. Masks are currently required pretty much wherever someone goes, specifically the pharmacy and grocery stores. Restaurants are either delivery, takeout or limited outdoor seating as of now. 

 

Pertaining to public transportation, Metro (subway) ridership is almost nil as the mayor is asking travelers to use this as a last resort for getting around the city. A good number of metro stations are closed and when taking the bus, passengers can only get in via using the back door - all fares are being waived at this time. 

 

Personally, I am extremely grateful for being able to work in a fishbowl and not be exposed to the general public over the last three months. Even though I've had three cruises canceled, I am just happy to be healthy and employed.

Summer is here in NY and greetings ... it has been a while since I posted news & updates from our/my area (Northeast sector in the USA) - New York City has now moved (only earlier this week - the last region in N.Y. State to do so) carefully into phase 2 of 4 in gradual reopening.  

 

Within our broad circles of extended families, friends, colleagues and ex/former co-workers & neighbors, etc. - we know of 2 losses to Covid-19 despite hospitalization and best efforts then ... it was difficult to never get a chance to say goodbye & farewell as part of losses and griefing.  They are in our thoughts & prayers and hopefully, the healing & acceptance being supported by the care & comfort available/given. 

 

Others in the same household also tested positive and luckily recovered, including someone who has since returned (after being out for a full month, isolated & quarantined at home) to full-time duty on the healthcare frontlines as a nurse at a world renowned cancer center, with the entire facility converted into ICU wards for acute Covid-19 care.  

 

The others that were first responders, healthcare personnel (I.T. support, administrator, pharmacists and one of our "baby" nephew, still in nursing school but continued to show up & report for ambulatory care, and others that worked in mission critical transport logistics (international air cargo that's beyond the "air bridge") in keeping all those vital medical supplies, equipments and PPE, including masks - has done their job faithfully, with pride and care, and I finally had a chance to meet several of them in person as they're finally getting some time-off, helping our nephew (his co-workers &  team members) downstairs doing some moving.  

 

Truth of the matter is that, each and everyone of them worn and continue to wear a mask - and, carry/use other PPE's including gloves as necessary - and frequently washed their hands - soap & running water as it is proven to be more effective than hand sanitizers.  If they are doing it for us, not just for themselves - there is simply no reasons and excuse for any of us to not wear a mask, has absolutely nothing to do with giving up our freedom or liberty.  

 

NYC's Dept of Health hasn't issued any new alerts, guidance or advisory for a while ... both state & city DOH pretty much has fought well and now got it under control by managing it dynamically - except earlier today.  This is aimed primary at the healthcare & medical circles - being a HAN subscriber and part of the city's Medical Reserve Corp ... but I thought it is worthwhile to share this with those/all interested parties on CC, as there are other active healthcare personnel that cruise, sail and enjoy the experience onboard,

Updated Guidance for Health Care Personnel on Personal Protective Equipment for COVID-19 and Work Restrictions Following Exposure

• In addition to a face mask or higher level of respiratory protection, eye protection (goggles or face shield) is now advised during all clinical encounters.
• Supply chain shortages of N95 respirators persist. Providers and facilities are encouraged to continue conservation measures.
• Fourteen-day exclusion from work is recommended for asymptomatic health care personnel who were exposed to individuals with confirmed COVID-19 in healthcare settings.

The Reserved Corp is currently polling and collecting feedback from the pool of 10,000 volunteers, of which more than 1/3 responded to the call for volunteers to help and took up a variety of tasks and functions in the mobilization.  We know this is just the first wave and are taking a pause to prepare for the next wave, the next one and not letting our guards down.  

 

My/our motto is to maintain a high level of continuous readiness and consistent with our all-hazards disaster/emergency planning - restocked our personal "strategic" stockpile of masks, gloves, sanitizers, and first aid/trauma care kit ... our "Go Kit" is always handy, in case we must go "STAT" - except that now, we've make sure to carry at least 2 weeks of extra personal medications, not just a week when in the old days of FEMA training for NIMS/ICS ... we're "taught" and coached to have (just) a minimum of 3 days worth of personal supplies/needs.  

 

Last but not least, it is sad but not unexpected to see the latest medial/scientific data as available, that we are on the edge of another upward spike for the summer of 2020, and, ignoring and not being prepared has serious consequences - a matter of living and coping with the loss of lives are not fake news.  Wish all well, safe and healthy - please, listen to the medical/healthcare experts - we are interested and sworn to saving lives and it isn't about red, blue or playing politics, or faking the news.  The economic pain and unemployed suffering are equally tragic and threaten everyone's life ... including the joy of sailing on a cruise.  Very difficult choices and some of it, very painful decisions that are taken lightly.  We too, wanted just as badly to be chatting about the joy of cruising soon.  Best regards !

Another update from Ireland.

We’re set for phase 3 on Monday and with a brand new government too. We had our national election just before the covid outbreak in February and there was no clear majority for any of the political parties so the outgoing government remained in place until negotiations completed. We now have a 3 party government as of today, Fianna Fáil’s leader is our new Taoiseach (prime minister), Fine Gael (who led the previous government) and the Green Party make up the new coalition. 
 

The numbers of new cases have stayed very low so phase 3 now includes a lot of changes that originally been planned for mid August as well as elements planned for mid July.

Hairdressers, barbers, beauty Salons, restaurants, hotels and swimming pools are allowed to reopen. Also pubs that serve food are allowed open but must be booked with tables to be occupied for no more than 1hour 45mins and at least €9 spent on food. Social distancing will be reduced from 2metres to 1metre on public transport and at restaurants and bars. 
Travel restrictions within Ireland will be gone, including allowing travel to the offshore islands much to the dismay of the islanders.

 

the holiday homes in Lahinch where I work are already fully occupied and it was extremely busy during this past week. It’s a beachside town, the surf schools have resumed their summer kids camps with some modifications while all the cafe’s and bars have revised their internal layouts ready for Monday.  
 

As could only happen in Ireland the weather turned yesterday and won’t be improving anytime soon, so we had our summer in March, April and May. 
 

I got a hair appointment for next Saturday and I’m going to have to get my hair cut short so it stops getting tangled in the strap for my face shield at work. Also a fringe (bangs) to cover the indentation it makes on my forehead.. #firstworldproblems 

 

my home county hasn’t had a new case of covid since June 9th and less than 350 total. Visitors from Dublin are getting dirty looks from the locals down here as the vast majority of cases in Ireland were in Dublin. The chief medical officer is giving out about possibly dropping the quarantine requirement for international visitors as some of the most recent new cases here traced back to people who’d been in the UK or Sweden.

 

right now the EU is trying to come up with reliable criteria the member states can agree/use for determining which countries will be on a “green” list which would mean residents from those countries won’t be expected to quarantine when they travel to/from another country on that list. Unfortunately there’s been a resurgence of covid in some of the Eastern Europe countries and there’s a few countries not using the same criteria or testing levels so their figures can’t be trusted. 
 

of course the airlines are the ones making the most noise about wanting international travel to be allowed without quarantine periods so they can salvage something from holiday season.

In Honolulu there was a step forward in announcement of welcoming tourism Aug 1, but under a lot of conditions of which I didn't see seaport openings scheduled. I saw several tourist daytrip catamarans start cruising around, probably testing idled equipment and rusty crew with no pax yet. However modest I think this is finally part of a bigger de-lockdown rollout, so even our timid gatekeepers recognize state and local business revenues are in peril.

 

On the other hand, the mayor has just mandated masks for almost all activities due to tiny rebound of almost negligible number hospitalized. It is no joke trying to get enough air thru a soggy mask as you labor under summer heat and humidity, esp if you are large. Here within blocks of most tourist hotels we are battered by a crime wave from the umpteen prison releases. Theft, vandalism, and trespassing is reported out of control by building managers, and this in spite of never any disease in prison. I think they cut back the releases after one murdered another.

@dumbth  Sorry to hear Honolulu & Oahu are experiencing these challenges.   We have family who live on the Big Island & they have not mentioned challenges w/ crime @ this time.

current status: stir-crazy. I am fortunate to be able to get enough time off from work to take like three vacations a year ( a three weeker and a couple weekers). that being said, I am NOT a summer vacationer (heat and crowds)  that being said just the fact that I cant hop on a plane and take a three or four day cruise (heck even give Bahamas paradise cruise a midweek 2 day option a try) is starting to weigh on me.

We live in Northern Virginia (Washington, DC suburbs), and things are slowly going back to normal. Most businesses in our area have re-opened, albeit with restrictions (limits of # of people allowed in shops at one time, masks sometimes required). My office is in downtown DC about 2 blocks from the White House, and I was shocked when I went in for the first time in March and saw many small businesses still boarded up (left over from the protests, I suspect). Public transit is rather sparse at the moment, but the usual horrid DC traffic is nigh non-existent. Most people here wear masks when inside businesses. Wife and I are healthy but we don't go out as often as we did pre-COVID. We have two cruises booked in 2021 and a land-based vacation in Mexico coming up.

We are in our seventies, living in Austin, Texas.   We are continuing to shelter-in-place at our home, with only minimal (necessary) excursions into commercial areas in our community.  We communicate with family members and friends via emails, text messages, FaceTime, Skype, and Zoom.   We are wondering when it will be safe for us to travel again.  We are particularly interested in NCL's Pride of America Hawaiian Islands cruise.   We notice that bookings are available for autumn 2020, and all of 2021, but have doubts about COVID 19 safety during that timeframe, especially for elderly persons like us.   What do you think?

Here in the Finger Lakes/Rochester region, many businesses have opened up, though of course with many new adjustments.

* Restaurants continue to offer a lot of take out, and since the weather is good many offer outdoor seating.  Many allow for indoor seating at something like 25% capacity.  We are in no hurry for that indoor experience though.

* Most stores restrict the number of people in at any time.  I only shop at places that mandate masks. For us, Costco, Trader Joe's, and Aldis have been the best.

* We have visited quite a few wineries who have had to seriously re-imagine how they handle visitors.  Tastings are not done belly-up to the tasting counter but done at distanced tables -- getting a flight rather than pour-by-pour.   Many have outdoor options, and when you go inside to make a purchase they take mask and social distancing seriously.  They are working very hard to make it safe, legal, and still provide an enjoyable customer experience.   I am happy to give them our support.

 

Some pockets of the area - just won't go there where there are too many people who just don't take it seriously enough. (They're typically not places I'd go anyway, younger crowd.)

 

We feel very lucky at our home. My husband has been working at home since mid-March with no sense of if/when he'll return to the office.  I've worked at home for several years. I'm glad he's here too b/c the things I would do to get out and see other people - the coffee shop to hang out, the Y, etc -- are not possible these days. The Duck Toller is the clear winner -- much longer walks and more opportunities for treats.

 

Several big school districts have made the announcement that kids won't be coming back in September, though I guess some might have options for kids with specific needs.   To be honest, I haven't paid that much attention as it's evolving.

 

It doesn't seem so limiting now -- the backyard is lovely, we feel safe taking walks, outdoor dining feels comfortable --- we wonder what it will be like once the weather turns.

I think they will not sail (or be allowed to) until it is looking very safe. Perhaps one of the many vaccine efforts will have something ready at the end of the year, but not be able to make enough for everyone until spring. Hawaii doesn't really have much virus problem but is super concerned about it, and may be losing interest in reopening for tourism any time soon.

 

I took a delightful swim in solitude today in front of Hawaii's premier hotel, the Halekulani, but it just closed for a year of renovations. The adjacent empty hotels, also on the water, look derelict like they have given up on reopening and could let them sink under the waves for insurance writeoffs. This is a heads up for all NCL booked guests that have a canceled cruise. DO NOT TAKE the future cruise credit. Ask for a cash refund! I have now learned my lesson. I booked a cruise for April 2020 that was canceled. I rebooked a cruise for October 2020 that has now been canceled. They told me that I am not eligible for a refund in cash. And the only future cruise credit is a dollar for dollar amount where others are getting 125% future credit. I paid in good faith and now they are acting poorly when they need to do all that they can to retain a customer base. Poor decision NCL! After I use my non refundable credit I will never again cruise with you again. Bad bad bad for a cruise line that I had been loyal too. Never will I cruise with them again.

Just a friendly word of advice: when your very first post is a "I'll never sail with X again" there may be some pushback. I'm sorry you had a rough time with NCL. Hopefully your experience will be better in the future.
