Just had to cancel my Aug Oasis cruise

Recommended Posts

Monday morning I get a call from my (now former employer) he is closing his Jewelry store after 50 years.

They had a robbery about 9 months ago. And they were underinsured, and now this crisis was too much to bear the financial hardship.

Funny how i could not care less about canceling my cruise.  Im so fortunate my family is currently still healthy.  What scares me, is where do I go from here? How am i going to provide for my family?  A year ago, canceling a cruise would be such a stressful thing to do. Now its just Oh well.

Priorities change I guess in times of crisis.

What a wonderful attitude you have.  I am so sorry you are facing the difficult question of how you will provide for your family.  I am praying that God will help you with the provision for your family.

Stellarcam,

Thank you so much.  But, I will take your prayer and pass it on to those who are more deserving than I am.

God bless you.

You will be amazed what you and your family can live without, and the hopefully long term habits you develop.

Call the people that hold your mortgage and any vehicle loans. They will work with you, they don't want your house or your car back. Call the utility companies, they will work with you too, a lot of them may have funds that will pay your bill for you. Call the people that you have credit cards with, tell them you won't be paying them a dime, ever.

Keep internet, but turn off all cable or satellite (or if you have had the same provider for a while switch to either cable or satellite and save even more). Call friends and family and see who will let you use their Netflix account. Lights are evil, get everyone in the habit of not turning them on or turning them off as soon as they are done. Unplug electronics that aren't being used, turn the temp on the fridge up just a smidge.

Sign up for the COBRA health care from your employer (if they were providing your health care), 401K money can be used for medical expenses, this includes premiums, with no penalty.

The vast majority of people end up in better financial shape after a layoff.

This is terrible advice.    Yes they might help you today. But you will owe 2-3 months worth of payments in 2-3 months.
a car payment and a mortgage may defer a pmt for you and add it to the end. But some might not and you will owe 2-3 x more in a few months.
“Call your credit card company and never pay them a dime ever”??
how will that ease the pain ?  Your putting this person into BK.
I hope you were joking.

So your advice is what? Make money magically appear? I notice you didn't offer any.

So, Ptroxx. Let's hear your sage wisdom, or STFU.

Have you ever even been unemployed before? The advice I gave I have followed myself, and it is advice I've received from the experts. ONLY deal with and pay people that can take something away from you, credit card companies can't.

Wow

unemployment Ins will now pay normal payout + 600 a week, while looking for another job. OP didn’t say he was broke

The payment advise is Good if your going down the drain and Bankruptcy is eminent  you stop payments. In NYs it’s a state order for mortgages to be moved to back end for 3 months if you request it. You need your credit rating these days for everything Protect it till you can’t.

OP it’s a new world my prayers go out to you and yours

Skip Cobra, it's a vastly overpriced rip off.  NJ still has Obama care.

From NJ state.

Open enrollment for 2020 health plans has ended, although New Jersey residents with qualifying events can still enroll or make changes to their coverage for 2020

I'm sorry you lost your job.  My job is secure and I'm grateful to still be working(nurse practitioner), but I am terrified to be working at this time.  So much unknown for everyone.  What a scary world we're living in.

If you are able to work at a food store or even amazon plant or as an amazon driver I hear they are all hiring.  Local food stores in bucks county are all advertising they are hiring people to fill online orders and do deliveries.   Maybe the same where you live in Nj.   You are allowed to work part time while receiving unemployment.   Good luck to you and your family.   Stay positive and healthy!

Yes, Walmart is hiring it is close to my home.  Actually, they are looking for overnight shift for restocking.  Not very glamorous.  However, its a paycheck.  And, it looks like schools will be shut for the remainder of this semester.

I'm very sorry to hear this and I feel your pain. I am a victim of retail demise myself and my job which was in the process of liquidation was shut down suddenly by this current event.  We were fired via a conference call last Sunday. Benefits ended immediately.

Thank you for working on the front line. I have friends and family in the medical field and I fear for their life. I feel more secure sitting home unemployed  than I would if I had to go work in a supermarket, drug store or medical facility.  There are so many unemployed that I actually take comfort knowing that I am in good company. I have never been unemployed since I started working at the age of 16 so this experience couldn't have come at a worse time.  I actually envy those who are booking cruises for June. They have no idea what's happening in this neck of the woods. If this is what's keeping them going than good for them and good for the cash flow for the cruise lines. The few people who are still working for them need to get paid too.

Stay Safe through this tough time.

I was at that point as well. What is NJ paying for unemployment?  I was looking for anything that would pay more than $504. However everything I came across paid less or it was a temporary job. Now that NY state has added another $600 It doesn't pay to work a part time job.

That is incorrect, the government is not giving an extra $600 per person. Some states like NY are capped at $504 a week for unemployment which is total crap when a studio apartment goes for 2K a month. Also, where are these jobs? They don’t want people leaving their houses so it’s not like you can pound the pavement. The “extra $600” only applies to high salaried employees. You still need to make double that ($2208.00 per week) to get the new cap of $1104.00.
FYI it is disgraceful that NJ gets $713 per week and NY only gets $504.00.

Thank you for sharing.  My neighbor had a similar experience a few months back. I hope you can turn this around, and find something soon.   Stay well.

Yes, the difference between NY & NJ seems odd.  I wonder if NY state just has a higher segment of its population on unemployment as compared with NJ.
