I want to thank you all for your kind words of support.  It certainly means a lot.

Susan is with the grandkids this afternoon (eating ice cream, I hear) while I drove my daughter the 1.5 hours to the hospital for her appointment this afternoon.

So while I am waiting, here is some food porn from last Thursday.  The grandkids had been to the Apple Castle to pick apples, and they wanted to make an apple pie.  They did everything themselves, other than cut the apples.  Granddaughter is still slow and steady with her knife skills.

The pie turned out so good, that I didn’t get a chance for a picture, before this much was gone.

I always knew they were smart kids, no raisins.😉

Today is my husband's birthday. I'm so thankful for him. He was a "stealth twin" and no one knew he was on the way, since back in 1974 they didn't do routine sonograms during pregnancy. His identical brother was born first without issue, but then when the surprise baby made his entrance, there were complications that resulted in him having cerebral palsy on his right side. He underwent several surgeries on his right eye and right leg during his childhood.

In spite of this, he is the most positive person I know, not self-conscious at all. He has adapted to every situation, even learning to bathe and diaper our baby with one hand. I am so proud of him and so grateful that I get to share life with him. ❤️

Happy Birthday to your special husband!

Bethany, wishing your DH many happy returns 🌹

@Ocean Boy,

We’re in Cyprus, in a hotel originally booked 3 years ago, to celebrate my DH’s 70 b’day (for May 2020… ). Made another attempt for August 2020… Now, 3rd time is actually a charm, since the grandkids are older and we’re looking forward to this trip, so much so that the little one refused to bath yesterday, saying: “I’ll bath in Cyprus” 😜

It was a long day of travel. First impression — the hotel looks amazing. We just checked in and went straight to dinner.

As always, I have trouble posting from my mobile, so only the pics will come from there.

@h20skibum, Mark, so glad to see your posting. I hope it takes a bit of all you have in mind right now. My thoughts are with you & Co.

Wishing you all an amazing time in Cyprus Dani.

Graham.

On our way to the airport. First time we decided to take the train, but the train isn’t “build” for travel… no place for even trolleys. Luckily, it’s the middle of the day, plenty of “free” seats …

Lots of rain in Dallas area after no rain for about 40 days , flooding in the area , might need to get out our pump of the water level in pool goes to the top .

When I was in Texas last week we drove down to South Texas. It rained from San Antonio down to Corpus, but none in Fredericksburg. They really need it.

Yay no pre-cruise testing for our upcoming cruises in September and October.

I don’t mind the testing, but I will miss out on the new protocols by 2 days. My first cruise of a b3b starts on Sept 3rd. Mike will join me on the 17th so he won’t have to test. We can save them for October.

I can hardly believe it was 41 years ago.

I dropped Pauline off at work this morning but we are taking our Sarah out tomorrow for a meal to celebrate.

This should reduce some stress.  Now if the airlines could get it together it should be about stress free.

One thing I don't understand is when they make these changes why do they fell like they need to wait a couple weeks before activating them.

I agree. I stress enough as it is. Once I’m on a ship all my worries go away.

I agree. It does give you an extra layer of security. Now you might not have the stress of testing but I think there will be an uptick in cases on board.

I got an email today with the new requirements. Pretty good as long as Canada and Bermuda are not in the picture.

I got an email message from Royal today saying that they want to keep me up to date on testing requirements for my upcoming cruise.  Since we're stopping in Canada, no change.  Testing still required.  🤬

Ok community mind:  If one were to go to Amelia Island for a short vacation where would one stay and what would one do.  Thank you in advance.

How short is short?  I like looking at condos on VRBO and then, if possible, renting directly from the agency so avoiding the VRBO fee.  There are lots of lovely oceanfront condo complexes on Amelia.  What to do?  Well, lots.  Fort Clinch or beach horse back riding or strolling around historic Fernandina…or beach combing or fishing…. And of course, eating!!

Probably 2-3 days short.  I am thinking about trying to work in a little get away for my husband and I since I have a line on a house sitter.  At the end of Sept. my son and I are going to Universal and at the end of Oct. my friends and I are going to a fiber fest.  My husband has some tractor shows coming up too so I wanted to work in something short for just us.

We really needed the rain but over 9 inches in 24 hours was a little too much , I have my water pump ready but water is still two inches from brim . Luckily have French drains all over hopefully will not get close to the house.

Where to stay depends on your interests and your budget.  I agree that renting an Oceanfront condo is great if you want a lot of beach time.  You can find a variety of condos to fit your budget. If you're more into high end resort hotels, there's the Ritz Carlton and the Omni.  Neither are cheap but both are very nice facilities with great amenities (spa, pools, restaurants, etc.).  If you want a nice, but more affordable hotel, there's a Hampton Inn, a Residence Inn (both on Sadler Road) and a new Springhill Suites/Courtyard by Marriott on Altantic Avenue.  All 4 are a short walk to the beach.  If you prefer wandering around the historic downtown Fernandina Beach area, there's a Hampton Inn there as well.  There are also several B&Bs in historic homes around downtown Fernandina Beach.  The downtown area is where most of the best restaurants are located.

Other things to do:

  • Golf at The Oak Marsh course at the Omni is available through the Golf Now app.  The Omni also has a new 10 hole par 3 course called Little Sandy that's challenging but fun.  They will supply clubs if you need them.  It might only be available to Omni guests though.
  • Charter boat rentals for fishing, sunset cruises, etc. from the downtown marina area.
  • Backwater Cat Adventure is a lot of fun.  It's driving fast little go cart like boats following a guide.  We did the Cumberland Island tour and loved it.
  • Kayaking through several parts of the island and the Amelia river.
  • Lots of biking trails.  Bike rentals are available from a couple of places.  Let me know if interested.
  • If you're more adventurous, there's skydiving and power hang gliding.  I did the power hand gliding also and really enjoyed it.
  • There's a small but interesting Amelia Island Museum of History.  Takes 1-2 hours to go through, depending on how much you read.  There are also docent led tours.  There's also a small shrimping museum.
  • Shopping in the downtown area, including touristy stuff, some nice clothing stores, a few jewelry places, and several artist shops.

You can get more info about places to stay, places to eat, and things to do here.
