Carnival Announces Plan To Resume Operations

There are dozens of articles...one by ABC News...that show the fallacy of the mortality rate.  A great example of the idiocy of some, NYC decided to add 3,700 deaths to their list because they "Thought" COVID-19 "May Have Been" a "Contributing factor".

I recommend people do research and learn about this disease and it's implications...who's really at risk and how to prevent yourself frombecoming infected.  Don't let the media control your thoughts...most of you are smarter than that!

Emirates Airlines is already screening all of its passengers with quick COVID-19 blood tests to assure they are COVID-19 free before they will allow them to board their planes and fly.

"Perhaps a sign of what the future holds for air travelers, Dubai-based airline Emirates has begun carrying out Covid-19 blood tests on passengers at the airport prior to flights.
According to a statement released by the airline, the first rapid Covid-19 blood tests took place on Wednesday at Dubai International Airport, with passengers on a flight to Tunisia all reportedly tested before departure.
The tests were conducted by the Dubai Health Authority at the Group Check-in area of Terminal 3 and results were available within 10 minutes.
Emirates claims to be the world's first airline to conduct such tests.
"We are working on plans to scale up testing capabilities in the future and extend it to other flights," said Adel Al Redha, Emirates Chief Operating Officer, in the statement.
"This will enable us to conduct on-site tests and provide immediate confirmation for Emirates passengers traveling to countries that require COVID-19 test certificates.
The airline has not stated whether any passengers would be refused boarding based on the results of the test. CNN Travel has reached out to Emirates for more info.
Serology (blood) tests aren't meant to diagnose active coronavirus infections. Rather, they check for proteins in the immune system, known as antibodies, through a blood sample. Their presence means a person was exposed to the virus and developed antibodies against it.
According to the US Food and Drug Administration, in the early days of an infection when the body's immune response is still building, antibodies may not be detected.
Still, the tests will likely be viewed as a step in the right direction by air travelers, as the world grapples with the question of when and how to safely ease travel bans."

CNN's Mallory Simon and Gina Yu contributed to this report.

and a few weeks later

Bottom line

In a pre-COVID-19 era it would have been virtually unfathomable to think that a time would come where an airline like Emirates would ground their fleet for over three months. But that’s exactly what has happened.

Emirates will continue to remain grounded until the third quarter, and even then we’ll only see a gradual resumption of operations, assuming the timeline doesn’t get pushed back much further.

With talk of all kinds of countries keeping borders closed for the rest of the year, that timeline is probably still very optimistic…

It sounds to me like someone's thinking is already controlled......everyone probably knows what the political talking points are regarding COVID-19.....but I will not discount that it is a very deadly disease and wrecking havoc on people's lives and families and the economy....I hope people will still have some money left for cruising when it is all said and done......cheers.

Half of 70,000 is 35,000 if you divide that by 3 months (Jan, Feb, Mar) the deaths are still higher per month than the figure you quoted for the flu in 2018 (5,000 per month for the 2018 flu deaths vs 11,600 COVID deaths all using your numbers). Not trying to launch a debate. Please don't think I am attacking you, I know sometimes the written word is taken the wrong way. Just stay well and respect this disease.

Whatever it is families are hurting. I just lost a loved one who had Covid on Saturday and it is all very real to me. In all, I know 7 people who have had Covid. Two were not hospitalized, one was hospitalized and survived, four died. Based on my experience, this is a disease to be respected. Two of the 7 were in their 60's the rest were in their 30"s and 40's. Back in late January early Feb. I too thought it was all blown out of proportion but have learned the hard way. I even cruised in mid-February and though nothing of this terrible virus. Please protect yourself, your loved ones and your neighbors.

That's great...I'm glad you can think for yourself.  I live with and an surrounded by medical professionals, so that's who I get information from...and you're right, money will be the issue because our politicians overreacted and shut down the economy without consideration, it would seem, to how you open it back up and create 20 million jobs for those now unemployed. For the record:  if you think I'm somehow controlled, you have a warped sense of reality, because I have been speaking out against these draconian measures since day #1.  Fear mongering for political points seems to be the daily menu!!

I am sorry for your loss!  That is very sad.  And no one, at least not I, was ever contending it's not a serious thing and people will die.  For the record: 150,000 people a month based on yearly averages are normally diagnosed with cancer.  Because hospitals spent 2 months now doing no routine visits, that would be 300,000 people that went undetected.  Average of deaths from early detection is 8%...so we can assume that the numebrs will be higher because of no early detection...so let's go 10% at the low end which comes out to 30,000 deaths.  Tertiary effects from this that some don't consider.

Not sure how we got from trying to devise a plan to open up cruising 1 Aug turned into this conversation, but back to the original question:  any ideas how we make 1 Aug real?

No offense, but I don't think the country is collapsing YET...exactly why we need to find a way to move forward.  And for the 70,000 families, let's look at the facts...tens of thousands are being coded as COVID-19 deaths because the hospitals are getting a nice chunk of change for that...$13K for any coded patient...$39K if they are on a ventilator.  If someone had a massive heart attack from being obese with high blood pressure and went to the hospital and died, they are using COVID-19 could have been a contributing factor and getting paid.  Many experts show the numbers half of what the media is portraying.  That being said, every death is tragic regardless and I feel sorry for those families.  Just like the 60,000 that died from the flu in 2018...I'm sure you felt for them too!!

Wow! Conspiracy theories much!!

Actually the numbers are way higher because many were wrongly diagnosed with Pneumonia back before the test kits were available. Case in point, my two friends. They had all the symptoms and hubby was very sick for weeks. It is believed they actually had the virus. This was late January/Early Feb. They are now being tested for the antibodies to help with the vaccine trials.

Obviously I am no disease specialist either, but I saw yesterday on news (several reputable sources, you can Google if you want) that the virus has already mutated from earlier this year and is now a more virulent strain.  How does the antigen test work when the virus is changing?  Rhetorical question as I'm sure you don't know either, but just playing devil's advocate here.

Saw something similar on the news that on the news (several reputable sources) that said the virus is mutating and getting weaker. Which sources and studies are right?

Weaker, stronger, doesn't matter....the point of my post was that the virus is changing and as such the testing would have to change as well.

And my point is that if you wait an hour or two the information being put out by the news media will change or will disagree totally with what they reported earlier.  So what actual facts are there to make decisions on things like testing?

You are correct, I am not a virus expert, and even though I once slept in a Holiday Inn Express, I wouldn't try to act as one.  LOL!  Seriously though, there are many stories going around about the virus mutating.  I will tell you this and with good reference to the MD that passed it along...viruses tend to weaken as they mutate because they realize they are killing the hosts and that is not their intent.  Yes, he actually said viruses are very smart indeed.  So I would take some of that with a grain of salt.  However, to re-address the original issue...how do we know the antigen test is working, I guess we can never be 100% certain.  Life is a gamble every time we walk out the door, so I guess it needs to be the choice of each individual.

Rather than say smart, how about viruses follow Darwin's Law of the Survival of the Fittest. If you kill off your host, you also die. If you mutate towards say a common cold, you can live a long time. It's evolution.

Moot point for me now as Princess has cancelled cruises out into November.  My September cruise was on the list of cancellations announced today so the decision has been made for me.

I agree with Paula.

I just received an email from Princess which cancelled my Canada New England cruise in October.

The whole summer schedule is cancelled.

Will rebook for next October.

Maybe moot point for you but not for many others.  After all it is not just about one person and their lives.

And here are a couple of more examples. DW told me she heard on the news yesterday that a mother died during childbirth (with the baby surviving). It seems that she had a preexisting condition that was not treated because it was not life threatening at the time. And I read maybe a week and a half ago of a neurosurgeon who wanted to operate on a patient but could not because of the new rules. He said he would now have to prescribe drugs that he would rather not, and he would still in the future have to operate when the condition finally could be classified as life threatening.

The law of unintended consequences at its worst!!!!

It looks like from what you see on TV that many of these people are ignoring social distancing guidelines and probably do not believe the medical advice being given either.  If they are unfortunate enough to get COVID-19 because of this they will be the first in the emergency rooms and ICU's begging the over-worked doctors and nurses to save their lives and all of sudden get religion about medicine and science.

Hard to imagine they would follow rules on a cruise ship either.

no shirt, no shoes, no mask, no service … part of the 'new normal' - but,  I would imagine eating with a mask on might be problematic ...
