Social Distancing On Cruise Ships - how can it be done?

Recommended Posts

COVID-19 has changed so much.  At the time of writing Stuart and I have already had one cruise holiday (on Celebrity's new Apex) cancelled for obvious reasons.

In order to restart it seems cruise operators will be forced to put in social distancing and other health protection measures.  But how can this be done on even the most spacious of vessels?

We have made a short podcast outlining some thoughts.

It can be found here > https://hearthis.at/ttp/socialdistancingupload/

Please listen and do share your thoughts

Here's hoping we can all get back to sea very soon.

Regards,

Deal breakers:

  • Mandatory Masks
  • End of Buffets
  • No dance parties
  • No bar seating
  • Limited theater seating
  • Mandatory room service on set nights
  • Not Interacting with all of my cruise buddies

Either cruises are cruises with the freedoms we all know and love or we will not be cruising again.

We have had 3 Celebrity Cruises cancel this year due to the suspension of cruising.  We have two cruises on Celebrity booked next year:  January 2021 Asian (Hong Kong, Vietnam, Philippines, Singapore) and October 2021 Med/TA (Spain ports, Morocco,  Canaries, TA).  We hope we are still going and at this time plan to.

As far as 2020, we are done trying to make a cruise happen.  Instead, Florida is getting our travel dollars, 14 days in a condo on the panhandle coast.  We do a "land cruise" annually, but we hope it doesn't become the only kind of cruising we do from now on. I hope and pray the the powers within the cruise industry don't sink cruising.

I really hope they teach the staff how to serve at the buffet lines.

before when they had to serve they gave huge portions even when you only asked for a small taste.

I have put my plate down and walked away from it in discust… I cannot look at a huge plate of food, make me want to hurl.

I am a small person. Cannot eat a huge scoop of anything!

I wanted to post some suggestions that may get someone who can do something thinking:

itineraries with a port every day! With port stops lasting all day...yes onboard spending will fall but cost of corp will be possible

more in room catering options. Table for two on balcony is magic

multi door embark/disembark...maybe even 4 doors to dispel the crowds

shows have masks. No question

Full serve buffet with trained pros on how to do more than slop food on a plate

hire a firm that is contracting to hospitals cleaning activities. Have a overnight cleaning...not same day disembark/embark and give time to disinfect.

of course the no touch temp checks

change layout of casino and spread it out...have more space with the machines and spread throughout.

small group activities should be more plentiful. Avoid the large 300 people style events in the foyer.

mandate “washy washy”...and enforce it at the entrances of all populated areas and eject passengers for not conforming

keep the pool open longer (perhaps all nite) so that you can spread out the “attention” around the pool if on a sea day. Otherwise really press for off boat activity

increase quality of excursions and get creative by working with now bankrupt rental car companies to get small group exploring possible.
