My wife and I cruise mainly in the Caribbean and I often wonder how much we should get coverage for an emergency evacuation.  We've been on cruises where there has been an emergency evacuation and wonder how much the evacuation cost that person.  If you did not have insurance, it sure would ruin a great cruise.

Thanks for your time.

Hi ED49404,

You don't need more than $100,000 in emergency evacuation coverage. The most expense emergency evacuation I've seen from the Caribbean was $60,000.

Thanks Steve, that's great to know.  I thought it would be more than that.

The emergency evacuation off the ship won't cost you anything. These evacuations will always be done by the US Coast Guard or a participating Naval entity. An evac off of a ship is highly specialized with exact training. Nothing a private for profit company does.

Now, the medical evacuation back home????? That's another story and that's where the $100K coverage will come in.

Any guidance on costs from, say the far eastern Mediterranean?

TIA - bo1953

Hi Bo1953,

The most expensive medical transport I've seen from Europe to the USA was to California in 2017. That was $102,000 because it required a team of doctors. The other medical transports Europe to the USA have been in the $40,000 - $70,000 range.

The reason the costs aren't as high as many assume is because the majority of medical transports do not use medically equipped aircraft.

Instead, they use commercial airlines with medical escorts. If needed, the company would buy extra seats in 1st class if the patient had to lay down.

I hope this makes sense.

Steve,

It does, thank you.... nothing like a 'lay flat' seat in FC!!!

Not under the conditions an evacuation would require...  😉

bon voyage
