Come sail with me on a virtual cruise on Majestic Princess to Fiji!

Some vital statistics (no, not mine!)

Majestic Princess is the third Royal Class ship, and was built in 2017 at the Fincantieri Shipyard. She was christened by Yao Ming and Ye Ling in Shanghai on 9 July 2017.

With double occupancy she can hold 3,560 guests and carries 1346 crew.

She is 144,216 tons and is 1083 ft (330m) long, with a beam of 126ft (38.4m)

She has 19 decks and has a service speed of 22 knots (25 mph)

Majestic Princess was built for the Chinese market, and was modified accordingly. Her Chinese name is Golden Age Princess. She was later changed to operating sailings out of Australia, between September and March. She was going to debut from Los Angeles in Autumn 2021, sailing the Mexican Riviera, but due to Covid she is now supposed to be sailing from Seattle to Alaska, in Summer 2021.

Majestic Princess was designed to appeal to the Chinese market, and as such there were a few changes to her internal features. The Chinese enjoy shopping at high end shops, so there are plenty of these.

Signage is in English and Mandarin, and there is a Cantonese Speciality restaurant, Harmony, as well as a VIP casino and private karaoke rooms, as both gambling and karaoke appeal to the Asian market. The Vista Lounge also became a Gaming Lounge, with mahjong tables, although on our Fiji sailing it had reverted to just being a lounge. The private gambling room had also been converted into Crooners, and the number of private karaoke rooms was drastically cut.

Whilst the Chinese like to smoke a lot, whilst operating out of Australia we were pleased to see that the Casino is non-smoking.

We did not feel that Majestic Princess was overly Chinese, and many of the Asian inspired areas were very beautiful.

Virtual yes, but I was actually on the ship with you so it will be more than that for me!  You've already had quite an adventure so far and it was all wonderful and unexpected.

Of course, and it will be interesting to hear what you did, too.

I’m really excited, and we’re not even really going anywhere! (But don’t tell anyone will you?) 😉

You've done a fantastic job of making us feel like we are all traveling with you.  With everything going on in the world, it's a wonderful thing that you are doing.  As for me, my responses may be delayed.  I am putting a toe back into the travel world and am leaving for our annual girl's trip tomorrow.  I will be safe, masked and armed with hand sanitizer and lots of wipes.  But I do look forward to you taking me back to this amazing part of the world!

                   🎶      We are sailing

                         We are sailing,

                         Home again,

                         ‘Cross the sea

                         We are sailing

                         Stormy waters

                         To be near you

                          To be free....  🎶

We chat to some of our neighbours, who are Australians, and then we wait just a little while until they announce the suites, and then us. We’re off!

A quick visit to Immigration and then we begin the long walk onto the ship. It’s been one of the swiftest and most efficient Princess embarkation that we have experienced.

Majestic looks beautiful and huge as we step onto her decks. A quick scan of our cards and we are ready to go. Stepping onboard a Princess ship always seems like coming home. I can feel myself relax and all my cares drift away.

It’s too early for our cabin to be ready so we decide to explore a little before we make our way to the dining room for lunch.

Now not everyone knows this little tip about lunch in the Dining Room, so please, if you are reading this, don’t tell a soul, as we don’t want all and sundry turning up at the dining room for lunch now do we, so keep it to yourself! Mum’s the word.🤫

But before that we make our way through the empty buffet, which is set for lunch, and are amused to see several minions made out of fruit.

The Bakery (not the Patisserie) already has some delicious looking desserts. It would seem that on this ship, the emphasis here is on bread products rather than desserts, and that is a bit of a disappointment as having been on Royal and Regal, their Patisseries have always been outstanding.

We walk outside on the open deck and see the Opera House sparkling in the morning sunshine, as well as The Rocks below us.

Thank you azbirdmom. I’m so glad that you really feel that we are on this trip.

Hope you have a wonderful girls trip with your friends. Where are you going?

Think we may need an extra suitcases these days for PPE, masks, hand sanitiser etc etc. I can see that some of my DHs stuff may have to be sacrificed on the altar of feminine beauty. Now a girl needs her shoes, doesn’t she? And if the suitcases are going to be full up with sanitising equipment, then I’m afraid something has to give.....and it won’t be my shoes........🤣

So glad we had time for that last walk through Sydney to see more of this beautiful city, I certainly hope to get back there sometime in the future.

Having spent time on the Royal, Regal and Sky, the Majestic with the Asian market changes will seem like a whole new class and I can hardly wait for a tour! I am definitely with you on first things first --- lunch in the dining room. I hope they still have my favourite first day lunch!

I noticed we are still using the cruise card... guess I can put my medallion bracelet away.

Yay....you are finally on the beautiful Majestic Princess.

I can see the roof top of the Holiday Inn Old Sydney (it's now a Rydges Hotel) between the clock tower and water tower.

I too am looking forward to lunch in the dining room. It seems the secret is out here in San Francisco. I have never seen the dining room so busy on embarkation day as what it was when we boarded the Grand Princess for the infamous Hawaii cruise back in February.

Oh my, so you’ve been on Sky! She looks amazing. Have there been any improvements, additions etc?

Was so hoping to go on Sky sometime. I love the Royal class ships, I know some don’t.

We will definitely see you in the dining room, we will save you a table in the window.....

Yes, cruise card still, I’m afraid, so sadly you will need to put your medallion bracelet away. Not sure if it was available to the creme de la creme in the top suites?

As you say, finally! Been a long time coming I’m afraid, but there was so much to see and do.

Shocked and sorry to hear that the hoi polloi have discovered the embarkation lunch in the dining room. Whatever next????

Our Mini-Suite

We decide to take a look at our deck and see if the rooms are open, and to our delight we find our cabin and it’s ready.

We open the door to our cabin which looks absolutely wonderful. It’s our first mini-suite, and probably our last, and only possible because when we booked, Princess had a special free upgrade from a balcony to a mini-suite.

I’m afraid we normally have either an outside or a balcony, so have never experienced the ‘suite life,’ nor will we ever be lucky enough to do so, but to be honest we'd rather have 2 cruises in a balcony than one in a suite. But Good Luck to those who can always travel in style! I wish you well. Maybe one day...... if we win the lottery! 🤣

I chose the cabin carefully as it was one of the larger ones. We explore the cabin which has a bathroom with a bath and shower over, a large king bed, and a comfortable seating area with a long sofa. There are two televisions which seems neat.

The balcony, as on all Royal Class ships, is not huge, but it’s plenty big enough for us, and at the moment we look out over The Rocks, with the amazing Sydney Harbour Bridge close by. What a view that is! There are people right at the top, who are climbing the bridge, who must have an even more amazing view.

The fridge is full as we have a complimentary bar set up as one of the Elite perks. There are miniature spirit bottles, some beer, some water and some sodas. We can swap them out at a later date. We don't really drink but we our kids enjoy the spoils of our cruises.

Our steward knocks and introduces himself, and I make a few requests - daily ice, four bath towels instead of just two, bathrobes, and 20 more hangers. He swiftly returns with all but the bathrobes which are still being laundered.

Well my dear Cruising Adventurers!

I hope you’ve all made it onboard and that you are settling into your staterooms.

I’m pleased to tell you that you have all been upgraded to a mini-suite, or higher.

Fingers crossed your suitcases arrive safely.

Next, we will go to Embarkation lunch in the Dining Room, the best kept secret on these boards......

But for now, I need some shut eye. See you in the morning...

You're welcome!  We are off to Cape Canaveral Florida.  One of my friends owns a condo there and I would normally agree with you on shoes but in this case my shoes will be flip flops.  Our favorite restaurants are closed for now so we will be spending our time relaxing at the beach.  Great times with old friends!

I am now catching up with you and am on board.  We were originally booked in a mini-suite but we decided to splurge and took the upsell offer to a full suite.  We celebrated our 25th anniversary on board and figured that we might as well go for it.  So here's cabin C738.  Narrow balcony with occasional soot but oh, what a view!

OMG azbirdmom! i was just about to turn the light off and go to sleep when I saw your post, and just had to look at the wonderful photos and video.

It’s absolutely gorgeous! Wow, what a balcony!

Hope you have a wonderful cruise again in this cabin as, of course, you were assigned the same stateroom.....

Enjoy your trip to Cape Canaveral. It’s certainly going to be different with all the Covid restrictions, but I’m sure seeing your friends will make up for it.

Good morning azbirdmom! I hope you have arrived safely with your friends and are enjoying some great times together.

I forgot to congratulate you on your Silver Wedding Anniversary! I have to agree that such an occasion is a great excuse to splurge, and what a splurge, the suite is absolutely beautiful.

I can’t wait to see the views from your balcony, once we are at sea. There is something so mesmerising about watching the wake of the ship, I really could sit there all day. You will certainly be able to have a few ‘Titanic’ moments on that balcony!

🎶  ‘Every night in my dreams, I see you, I feel you..........’

Of course, you will be celebrating this anniversary with us on this cruise, so I do hope that when the time comes, you will tell us how you spent the day. We will all, of course, join you for a celebratory drink! I have reserved the Hollywood Conservatory for this occasion as I think it’s going to be a large crowd! 🥂🍾🥂

Now that I am not propping up my eyelids with matchsticks I have taken another look at your photos, and wonder if, when you have time, you could tell us what all the extra bits and pieces are? Like the two bags hanging in the wardrobe, what do they contain? Also, what is on the bed? Did you have special toiletries?

Food, glorious food....

Just before 12.00 noon we go down to the dining room for lunch. This is always the best meal of the cruise as very few people know that it is available, and so it’s quiet and elegant and very relaxing.

The doors are shut so we wait outside and are soon joined by a few more stalwarts who obviously know the secret too - in fact, I can almost perceive a little ripple of annoyance that anyone else could possibly know the secret but them. There are covert glances exchanged, as we wait for the great door opening ceremony.

The doors open with a flourish, and we are guided to a table for two by the window. There are flowers on the table which is a nice touch, and which so many cruise lines have discontinued.

There is a basket with rolls on the table together with butter portions (3 to be exact!) in a silver dish. No ‘butter-gate’ here!

The menu, admittedly, has shrunk over the years, and there are just two choices for each course, but its still excellent.

Neither of us has a starter - Red Snapper Mojito or fettuccine Alfredo - but I choose the Chateaubriand of Beef Tenderloin and DH has the Trout Armandine. Both are delicious.

Service is quick and efficient and we enjoy a lovely meal, ending with that Princess piece de resistance, a Milky Chocolate-Hazelnut Soufflé with an amaretto sabayon. IMHO nobody seems able to produce a soufflé like Princess. It’s one of my favourite desserts and is light and fluffy and really delicious.

Fully replete we leave the dining room and make our way to our cabin. People are boarding and the elevators are filling up with happy cruisers as we ascend to Aloha Deck.

🎶 Another suitcase in another hall........🎶

Our suitcases have arrived outside our door, so I make a start on the great unpacking.

We have a routine.

First, I line all the drawers, then I unpack and and put everything I can on hangers, whilst DH transports things to the drawers and the wardrobe. Princess are great for wardrobes, with plenty of room for everything in the large open space opposite the bathroom. It’s a huge area, with plenty of hanging space.

We have three suitcases to unpack but it’s a pretty efficient operation and we finish in time to go up to the buffet for a well deserved cup of tea. The cabin is neat and tidy, all the toiletries are put away, shoes are in a hanging shoe rack and all’s right with the world.

Now I really can relax!

‘Mustard’ drill....and I get on my soapbox!

EE5D01AC-2181-4A8C-A05C-879D92C36420.thumb.jpeg.8af67cfe097b85f695de24700f61f210.jpeg

It will soon be muster drill, at 3.15, so we make our way to our muster station, minus our life jackets which can stay in the cabin.

I’m afraid I’m not a great fan of the new videos that accompany muster drill. It is a requirement for everyone to attend, and it is important, but unfortunately cruise lines (and airlines!) seem to think that we have to be amused or we won’t listen. Recently, it seems to have become just another form of entertainment, with music and jokes, and to be honest I think it completely misses the point.

Princess have used the crew of the old ‘Love Boat’ to get their message across and frankly I think it is really silly. Mind you, it’s no sillier than the one on RCL which is a ridiculous Bond type movie which leaves you wondering what the heck it was really about. People are laughing and chatting and not really concentrating on the message. Lord help them if there really WAS an emergency.

One only has to remember the Costa Concordia to realise that, even in sight of land, a chaotic and disorganised evacuation of a ship will cost lives. Sadly, I think the crew themselves are to blame as they seem to encourage a holiday camp atmosphere. If the crew don't take it seriously how on earth can you expect passengers to?

Is it really asking too much of people to listen and understand a simple message that could save their lives - it’s only 10 minutes of so and then the rest of the time is yours. I’m sure all those passengers on Concordia thought it could never happen to them.

Now I’ll get off my soap box!

‘Mustard’ Drill over we make our way through the crowds and back to our cabin. We should be sailing soon after 4.00 pm but in fact we are delayed, and don’t actually leave Sydney until 18.50.

Glad you are enjoying it, the weather is brilliant, isn't it? I saw you sitting out on the deck just now as we walked around the deck, your cap was set at a jaunty angle........

Let's go for a little walk around the deck.....

After a quick cup of tea in the buffet we stroll along the outside deck and take a last look at beautiful Sydney. It's an amazing day, with full sunshine and gloriously blue skies.

This apartment block looks wonderful. What a view they must have of the ships! I think I would be wasting so much time just looking out of the window if I lived here..

It looks as if each apartment has the same chairs on the balcony, which is really small, but I guess the view makes up for it!

A Bridge Walk for the Brave

We return to our cabin to do a bit of sorting out, have a shower and get dressed for dinner.

As the ship has been delayed departing we have time to stand on the balcony and take a look around.

I use my Sony camera to get some close up shots.

A group of people are doing the bridge walk. What amazing views there must be from up there!

Is that Gail (cnd crsr) I can see up there? Don't be long, will you?  We don't want you to miss the boat now do we, after all this time waiting for it to happen! Lucky the departure has been delayed....😉

This is Admiralty House, where Prince William, Kate and baby George stayed during their visit to New Zealand and Australia in 2014, when George was a year old.

They touched down at Sydney Airport and Kate was seen in a stunning yellow dress, which William reportedly said made her look like a banana! Even Royal husbands can put their foot in it sometimes.

Admiralty House is the official residence of the Governor General of Australia, and sits on the foreshore of Sydney Harbour. It must have wonderful views over the harbour from its wide verandahs. It would have been a secluded hideaway for the royals during their tour.

So sorry I’ve been AWOL........

Our little grandson came for the first time, to play in our garden and have lunch. Can’t believe how much we’ve missed him all these long months.

Grandchildren are the best.  We just visited our two granddaughters in Las Vegas a few weeks back.  🙂

Thank you Ellie for saving the table by the window at lunch. I really miss the old first day lunch menu!  I always had the avocado/shrimp starter followed by the salmon. I followed your lead today and tried the beef, and agree it was delicious.

I love all the extra space in the mini suite, and having a tub rather that the tiny shower with the clinging curtain is a plus. Too bad the balcony is so narrow😒

Did you see me wave from the Bridge Walk? I just had to try that one more time, but I made sure I was back before sail away!  And yes,  it was just as scary as the first time.

Speaking of scary.... that mouth at Luna Park... do you remember the story of Jonah and the whale!!!!

Now I am ready for dinner... will it be another new menu...

Gail
