Cruise & Maritime Voyages (CMV) UK placed in Administration

Recommended Posts

Cruise & Maritime Voyages (CMV) UK placed in Administration.  All their cruises are cancelled.  UK passengers could be covered by ABTA or ATOL.

Any Aussies have current bookings or waiting for refunds from CMV?

The proposed acquisition  was  quite surprising news - particularly in the current climate of uncertainly.

Has CMV been refusing to accept the reality until now?

Does that mean that P&O Australia's sale of Dawn and Aria has fallen through?

CMV was due to take delivery on 2/3 and 2/5.  That won't now go ahead.

I am taking that as P&O Australia will still have them on their hands. Will that have an impact on their acquisition of Golden and Star Princess?

Luxury items like cruises and travel will go first , then it will trickle down through society as a whole .

I was saddened to see that an Australian Italian travel family who have escorted Australians on tours of Italy for thirty years have gone into administration. I can't remember their name but always thought I'd love to travel to Italy with them.  This is a sign of the times when reputable companies go under.

Appears so, some of the UK boards and CMV board on here is reporting that CMV and T/A's were still selling their cruises on the weekend and they collapsed on Monday, did they not.  ABTA will get the Brits their money, but overseas bookers may struggle.

It was reported on adelaidenow.com.au on the weekend that "Cruise line CMV was buoyant about return of cruising to SA". I sincerely hope nobody purchased cruises with CMV based on that article.

I bet they did, Aussies liked Vasco De Gama.  So CMV won't be taking Pacific Dawn and Pacific Aria now, they might be going to the Indian Scrap Yard.  I cannot see in this economy that any other established cruise line will take over CMV, I can only imagine their debts.

That acquisition news came out in November last year - well before the "current climate of uncertainty." Nothing unreasonable there as they had been doing well.

Not sure what you mean about not accepting reality; this is the reality they're in. Like many, they'd tried to raise funds, but as a smaller operator with debt it was hard to do.

Everything's fluid at the moment. Even in good times, decision's change so they'll reassees  fleet planning as time goes on and things develop.

Not ethical selling cruises on the weekend and go into administration the next day.

It seems that there will be no future for the older, tired and less economical ships - if nobody will buy them (and Carnival is thinking about getting rid of 6 or 7 ships) - then they will have to sold only for scrap.  And the newer, larger ships with bells and whistles would make it easier for companies to sail with 50 % capacity for a some time - and still make a profit.

And for those wanting smaller, more cosy ships - Viking Ocean looks ( at this stage) that they will remain - a private company, but disappointment for pax looking for reasonably priced smaller ship.

I'm not sure you could get an A320 to land at Mystery Island without the use of floats. 😉

There goes my next 2 crises in January 2021.

Luckily only deposits with TA's, we were never going to pay the final payments as we suspected this was going to occur.

And speaking of the cruise industry as a whole, here is the opinion of a crisis communication  specialist (written for the cruise executives) as to the importance of communication for cruises to survive

https://www.maritime-executive.com/editorials/oped-what-it-will-take-for-the-cruise-industry-to-survive

Some quotes:

"the present crisis can be seen as a great opportunity as it might force the whole industry and all stakeholders hard to do something that they maybe should have done much earlier:

  • listening even more carefully to the critics

  • taking criticism more seriously

  • including elements of criticism in the communication strategy instead of reflexively negating them and/or primarily entering and persisting into a mode of defense and justification

  • increased use of elements of surprise such as demonstrating understanding, respect, even gratitude for the criticism expressed and, above all, courage for alleged weakness by admitting openly, in addition to the compiled catalog of killer counterarguments, that solutions are still not yet found for every challenge everywhere - but that hard work at it is in progress

  • entering into a dialogue with the "enemies", inviting even more of the sharpest critics for looks behind the scenes to terminals and ships and showing how professionally measures are implemented (yes, there is ISPS, and yet, there is the need to open up shipping more to the public - the IMO, after all, is calling to improve the image of shipping since decades!)

  • pursuing a proactive communication policy, characterized by more tangible empathy, sensitivity to criticism, perhaps a little more modesty and transparency. "
