I wonder if he rang the ship's bell before leaving the ship? I believe it is maritime tradition to do so before a ship is sent off to pasture.

Anyway it is a sad end for such a proud ship with a historic part of Carnival's history.  I always enjoyed Fantasy class ships and I am fortunate to have a few Fantasy cruises notched in my belt.

they’re not all gone yet! 4 should be in service when cruises resume.

I am heartbroken, and I guess, naive.  When I heard the ships had been sold, I had no idea this is what it meant.  I assumed it meant they were going to another cruise line to be rebranded and give other cruisers happy times.  I am so shocked I don't even know what to say.

"This process involves bringing the ship out to sea, putting the engines full throttle ahead, and running the vessel on shore until she stops."   Such a sad, brutal concept....

Is that why there's so much smoke coming from the smoke stacks?

Per John Heald, they removed the ship's bell, coin, and model before she arrived at Aliaga.

Every capital asset has a finite life. If the ship had the ability to operate competitively and at a profit, it would remain in the fleet.

The current situation is that cannot do that, and due to its age the best business decision is to sell it for scrap.

As an aviator it breaks my heart to see so many B747's sitting in Mojave with components missing. The Queen of the skies as given up the title to the B787 with its ability to make a profit on long thin routes.

The Fantasy class has been replaced with the Vista class and soon the Mardi Gras LNG ships. While some may have nostalgia for the Fantasy class ships, I do for Imagination and Inspiration, the new ships are certainly better.

The ships my Grandmother sailed to Asia and Europe on a century ago are long gone, but I am sure she would be the first to appreciate the new.

Shed a tear for the past, but revel on the gang plank when boarding the new builds.

My Condolences to all that sailed her. I guess its like losing an old friend. I found out many years after they scrapped the Mardi Gras. I think only IBM had computers back then. My Dad went to two Decommissionings of ships he was on and the U.S. Navy had a big ceremony. It seems so cheap to run it into the beach. I did that with my boat many times back in the mid to late. 70's

I can respect the sentimentality of posters who have expressed their emotions on the passing of this ship.

I have a different perspective however, as I ceased sailing this class 15 years ago because it was old and insufficient back then.

I can celebrate while others mourn.

About 15 years ago a local radio station had a contest: describe how a loved one endured Hurricane Katrina and improved the lives of others. I entered my wife. Well deserved. Then I completely forgot about it.

About a month later I got a call from the radio station. My entry had won a cruise on the Fantasy.

We kept waiting for the cabin assignment, expecting something in steerage. We arrived at the terminal the morning of the cruise, still with no cabin assigned. As soon as we checked in a Carnival rep came to meet us. She said we had been assigned to Cabin 2. What in the heck was that? It was not even shown on the ship's deck plans.

It turned out to be the "owner's suite." Living room, dining room, hot tub, wraparound balcony. Talk about luxury. We had a great cruise (even won in the casino). Still one of our all-time favorites. Au revoir, Fantasy.

We had Suite 1 on our Fantasy cruise. Truly an experience. DH wore his Fantasy t-shirt in her honor today.

i just read about it here:

https://www.nytimes.com/2020/10/30/travel/cruise-ships-scrapped.html

"Among the ships being recycled at Aliaga, are three Carnival cruise liners — Inspiration, Imagination and Fantasy, which had just been refurbished in 2019."

any explanation of why Carnival chose to scrap a ship they spent millions in refurb last year instead of doing a cool layup?

and noone wanted to buy it for more than the cost of scrap??
