I'm not rushing to Russia to take it...BUT...OTOH, I sincerely hope that they are extremely successful and safe with it...

This is beyond nationalistic pride or politics.  Yes, they may be rushing into it, HOWEVER...We all hope ANYONE can prove the virus beatable...and doing away with the pandemic ANYWHERE in the world helps us all out in the end...

So, Russia has approved a vaccine not yet tested in Phase III trials.

Anyone planning on sneaking over there to get a shot?

Very funny.  Since an RNA virus like COVID changes - that is how those coming from Italy vs. China were identified; we hopefully Will be at 50% plus.

The Russian virus actually is in phase 3 trails - those getting the vaccine.  Sort of like human guinea pigs.

Not really Phase 3 since real trials involve administering placebos to numerous people and comparing the populations.

But yes, human guinea pigs is correct!

Actually, Sputnik5 has been tested extensively within the Russian Military already, hence the approval . However, this was not an official Phase 3 trial as such.

Still, Although you should not by any means underestimate the Russian medical capacities ( they ARE among the best in the World in several medical fields), this vaccine is clearly rushed for political reasons.

The General population  that is healthy in not in a Medical profession Worldwide will NOT have access to a SARS-COV2 vaccine before 2021. That is a fact .

Maybe.  Like the rest of us, people from Russia travel worldwide.

TeeRick,

I have heard that Russians can have difficulty getting visas to some countries.  Also, three countries are wide open to Russian visitors (Turkey, Greece and Israel) and lots of Russians do visit those countries.

Certainly agree.  Did you find a reputable pharma that said they would have a vaccine available to the masses this year?  The owner of a FDA production facility capable of 200M doses yearly suggested hopefully late spring.  Even with multiple production plants involved it Will take weeks for production, distribution and inoculation.

IF everything goes well with the Oxford developed vaccine, and so far all the reports indicate that it is, AstraZeneca will have nearly 1 billion dose available by November 1.  400 million of which are going to the US and UK.

I am hoping for a successful Russian vaccine.  This is not a competition or resurrection of the Cold War (pardon the pun actually😃).   Anyway, the Russian vaccine could be tested in the EU and USA by bridging studies based upon comparative immunity with other successful vaccines developed.

Looks like they're planning on using the Philippines as guinea pigs.

Thanks! This second article is quite interesting.  It might aid vaccine approaches targeting SPIKE.  But just as important it suggests that a simple peptide drug might be therapeutic against SARS-CoV-2 or perhaps a targeted monoclonal antibody.
