OMG scary news. Credit card info, passport #, birthday, names & addresses etc all at risk.

It's a good reason to keep the various business units separate and limit the damage that could be done by russians.

More good news.  Hopefully they contact those who may have had their info compromised.

Does anyone know which Carnival Corp. "brand" was compromised? The news article didn't state which cruise line.

When was the attack? Aug 15th.

When did the CFO/IT guy resign? Aug 15th

Most of the the time - 90+ % of the time

ramsom attacks are successful due to systems not having the proper defenses and or while have the proper sentences someone violated at security policy.

Yes, one of the brands under the umbrella was hit. The article doesn't say which one, so it might not be Carnival Cruise Lines.

I think we got word of the resignation last Friday, which would have been the 14th

I believe it was Carnival UK as Cunard and P&O wrote statements on their Facebook pages and advised their customer engagement centers are unavailable due to an IT related incident.

This is why corporations and government entities should do a daily backup.  You tell the hacker that has locked you out where to go.  Wipe your hard drives and reload.

Jimbo, I definitely don't want to reply on behalf of the original poster, but I can say I won't be surprised either IF the offending branch of that corporate family tree is CCL  It is my personal impression that they've not retained the brightest bulbs on that particular IT team.

If they can continually screw up (or ignore) the easier stuff . . . falling victim to ransomware shouldn't be a shocker.

Hopefully the ransom requested was a huge supply of Guy's Burgers . . . and they'll get those delivered, allowing us all to go back to entering info for our future cruise vacations with less serious concern.

Rumor has it, the person initiating the data breach and holding internal materials for ransom was waiting for their refund. Supposedly they were tired of waiting and wanted to process it on their own.

That is a pretty far out supposition. I highly doubt that a person with that advanced skill set,  would do that just because they are anxious for a refund.

Just saying, Carnival Corporation hasn’t denied the allegation.

Has this rumor been made public? I'd like to learn more.
