We’re looking at doing a Viking Grand European river cruise.  We have noticed that prices are less during the summer months (June, July, August). Anyone know why this is the case.

We've never taken a Viking river cruise so I can't speak specifically for them.  But we've found that generally prices are lower during the summer months because it's much hotter & more crowded during the summer than it is during the "shoulder season"-May, September & October.  Also, many Europeans go on their vacations during August so some restaurants/attractions/etc. may be closed then.  Hope this helps a bit!

Because it can be blazing hot. WAY too crowded, and that is when they have more river issues....If it doesn't rain, the rivers are low....if the rivers are low, the boats don't go!! If you  HAVE to go in the summer, try early June....If not, go in spring or fall.

I agree with the previous two posts regarding the heat and the crowds in the summer.  We took a Rhine cruise in August of 2018. It was in the 90’s the whole time so made for some uncomfortable touring. Low water is another issue. There are lots of posts here from people whose river cruises turned into bus tours because of low water. Our ship made it all the way to Basel, but it was touch and go.

We experienced low water on our Danube cruise in October! I agree that the summer months can be very warm & there are usually hoards of tourists. Due to high/low water, river cruising is always a crap shoot.
