Good morning all, have a great day celebrating all kinds of things and people.  Very little turkey left from our dinner yesterday so it will go into the soup that I am going to make today.   I will look up a recipe for the chicken dish as I haven't heard if it before and I just know I would like a Planter's Punch drink.  Both of Roy's lists are getting longer, my thoughts are with those on the care list and a cheer for those celebrating.  Have a great day everyone, stay safe.

Happy Thanksgiving Daily-ites! (Whether you celebrate or not, LOL!) Our Maple Leaf flag is flying on a somewhat dismal day, compliments of the remnants of Delta. Your menus, quotes, drink suggestions, and general good humor lift our spirits. For those of you dealing with adversity, your strength and empathy for others is particularly noteworthy.

Despite all the always fabulous food & drink suggestions for today, we will take a different path, starting with our pre-dinner cocktail: a Canadian martini (recipe provided on a bottle of Polar Ice Vodka from Canada years ago). Not surprisingly, it involves vodka and maple syrup. Not quite Happy Hour at the Ocean Bar, but the in-house bartender is very good and doesn't take tips, Cute too! Then as we go on to roast leg of lamb with farmers' market green beens, hasselback sweet potato and salad, I can't help but wonder how well today's suggested garnacha would pair with it (love grenache). We will make do with a Charles Smith cab-sauvignon from Washington State. And if we are capable of moving, dessert will be an apple crostata. I suspect a little more maple syrup will be involved when it's prepared.

Stay safe everyone!

Good morning, thanks for the Daily!  Happy Thanksgiving to my Canadian CC friends all over the world, and Happy Columbus Day / Indigenous People's Day / Monday to everyone else.  What a combination of days; I do know at times my father was a frustrated, arthritic farmer, so he had it all going on!

I'd like to try today's menu suggestion, but DH doesn't particularly care for spicy dishes, so I may have to wait to see it on a restaurant menu and order it.  Because we had our delicious turkey dinner yesterday (courtesy our wonderful neighbour), today I'm baking a pork chop/rice casserole dish that will make our house smell almost as yummy as cooking turkey.  And wine.

Prayers for everyone on the list, and even for those who don't think they need them.  We will raise our wine glasses this evening, thankful for all the blessings we have received, and to celebrate those on the list.  Be well, stay safe!

Smooth Sailing!  🙂🙂🙂

Good morning Dailyites and thank you to Rich and Roy and all those who make this a welcoming place.

Happy Thanksgiving Day to our Canadian friends!!

Canada boasts many wonderful things to be thankful for but for me she was the beloved home to my favorite author of all time, Lucy Maud Montgomery. I have collected and read, multiple times, every story short or long of hers in print. Her great love of Canada was very evident in all her writing.

Yes Columbus Day is today here in the States though I don't really remember much hubbub about it as a child nor today and other than state and federal buildings being closed and many banks being closed, I don't think it is much known nor celebrated much outside of maybe some local celebrations. I can easily understand folks not even knowing there is a Columbus Day. On that topic, and as I love recommending books whenever possible, today I recommend Tony Horwitz book "A Voyage Long and Strange: Rediscovering the New World" for a more balanced and thought provoking  view of those events and many more so long ago. Great read for anyone who lives in N. America and is interested in the "discovery" narratives or enjoys travelogue style books. Tony pulled no punches, was an honest and thought provoking historian and a delightful writer. Dh and I read his "Confederates in the Attic" (another fantastic read) outloud to each other when we were dating, a habit we got into as a book is so much more fun when it is shared. Tony sadly died suddenly far to young just last year.

Old Farmer Day, goodness I come from a long line of those. My granddaddy would have sniffed at the idea of having his own day. He was the quintessential old farmer, smelling of good fresh earth and tobacco, grease from his old tractor on his hands and the overalls that were his uniform. He was depression era too, so not much ruffled his feathers. I adore the stories my mom tells me. Even as a child I knew he grew the best tomatoes and watermelons imaginable.

Today is dd's birthday party. The big 3!! They grow up so fast. Sigh. She was our miracle baby as my specialist looked at my 40 something self and said another baby wasn't even slightly possible. Well we showed him!! She is our delight. So, the house is ready, food and cake ordered. Presents bedecked. Baloons, flowers. She will have a wonderful day with her grannies and aunty and most especially her big brother here.. I am very thankful!! And thank you all for your kind words yesterday.

Prayer and thoughts for all those on the list and cheers for those celebrating joy and prayers answered and miracles.

Have a delightful and safe day all!!

Good morning and thanks for the update.

It’s a rainy day and cool, supposed to last all day.

Dinner tonight will be Spaghetti and salad for Columbus Day.

Happy Thanksgiving Day to my Canadian friends. It’s hard to believe that time of year already.
Blessings and prayers to all on our lists.

Happy Thanksgiving to our Canadian friends!

This was our first Canadian Thanksgiving in our Deer Bay Lake home in 2018. A bit spartan since we didn't have the good china brought over yet and the kitchen was not fully kitted out (and it was just the two of us) -

Hopefully we will be back for the 2021 Thanksgiving!

Good morning! Thank you Rich for the Daily, thank you Roy for the lists, and thank you to all who share the bits and pieces and personalities that make this thread the enjoyable experience it has become.

Happy Thanksgiving to all of our Canadian neighbors!

I have known many old farmers, and most of them were frustrated by 'arthur' and any or all of the other assorted 'itises'.

After a night of fairly significant winds that woke us up more than once (gusts over most of Kansas ranged from 50 to more than 70 mph) we're poking our heads out to see what the cleanup will entail. Doesn't look like we had any damage to speak of, but the news showed others less lucky. Trees and power lines down, and some traffic problems from dust storms. At one point I-70 was shut down and cars were being escorted off the highway. We'll keep all those affected in our thoughts today.

Looks like fall weather might make it by the end of the week. Can't say we'll miss the 90 degree temps. And some rain would be welcome.

Hope everyone has a wonderful day, whatever you might or might not be celebrating. Stay safe and healthy!

Now, thanks to a picture of some yummy looking cookies, it's time to go foraging...

In the US, today is Columbus Day - a national holiday. I did not include it in the main post due to the many ideas that have come out in the last few years about the holiday and if it should be celebrated.

In any case, banks and government offices are closed today. Hope everyone has a great day.

I still celebrate Columbus Day.

That table is gorgeous. Is it quartersawn white oak?

We love this table! It is quartersawn white oak and is big, it can handle ten with no problem. The top is one piece - no leaves. We bought it in Bowmanville, Ontario, a lovely town east of Toronto near the 401. We got a really good deal - it had been on the showroom floor for a long time & they wanted to get rid of it. It was probably too big for most folks. Luckily, we had a perfect spot for it.

The runner in the picture came from St. Remy de Provence, purchased during a stop on our 2018 Koningsdam transatlantic.

Happy Thanksgiving.

The sun is shining and it is a beautiful autumn day here.

I am looking forward to the aroma of roasting turkey to fill the house today.

Pumpkin Swirl Cheesecake is baked and ready for tonight's dessert.

A few autumn leaves below, with turkey and cheesecake photographs to follow later today.

Ann we had a winery just below our home in Coeur d'Alene. They made wine in the stainless steel vats. They have a Voignier that is delicious, and about $25 a bottle.

Could you share the name of the winery?  Coeur d'Alene is a short day trip for us and I love Viognier!

@cat shepard my grandparents also came from Quebec.  I may have been too young to remember (I was only 13 when Grandpa died) but I don't remember any mention of Canadian Thanksgiving either.

@bouhunter I'm so surprised so many hadn't heard of Columbus Day!  Being a federal holiday, no mail, banks etc. closed.

Everyone have a great day and Happy Canadian Thanksgiving!

Evidently our Thanksgiving Day has been a moveable feast through the years.  I really don't remember much mention of it as I was growing up - and in the paper yesterday there was an article about it  - during the 1918 pandemic it was delayed until December 1!

Anyway, Happy Thanksgiving, Columbus Day, whatever!  Thanks go to Rich and Roy for the Daily news and and care list.

It is called Coeur D'Alene Cellars and it's on Schreiber Way. If you look up the hill from there you will see our previous home;)

Today's care list:

Mrs Vmax getting ready for surgery

As part of the pre surgical routine Ellen had to have a Covid test today.

The appointment was for 9.45am this morning and we arrived at 9.30 am and she was seen immediately. It was a drive thru' system.  The samples from nose and throat were collected and then we had to head to another clinic for a pelvic scan.

Covid test results received at 5.30pm today. That was impressive. (result was negative).

We would love to have both of you. After this virus has been eradicated might be better timing. And if you have a private jet, we have an airport here in Culpeper, LOL! And you don't have to do dishes. Wine is like Paris: always a good idea, LOL!

Good morning, all! We had our Thanksgiving dinner last night. We woke up to snow on the hills for the first time this season. As we head home over the pass today, I’m hoping the new snow doesn’t bring us any Moment of Frustration!
enjoy the holiday today, whatever it may be called in your neck of the woods!
