House Subcommittee on Coast Guard and Maritime Transportation requests more information on CDC No Sail Order

Recommended Posts

It appears the a Sub Committee of the U.S. House of Representatives (Coast Guard and Transportation) is looking into possible White House interference with respect to the extension of the No Sail Order that was extended last week after the meeting with VP Pence.

It is hard to tell if this will go anywhere, but my guess is that it won't speed up the lifting of the No Sail Order.

Certainly political and as you said likely meaningless.   As I understand it - the "White House" wanted the no sail order lifted and the CDC said wait till February.   No predictions except that little cruising is likely until January because of the logistics in getting ships.

My questions remain the same for US sailings - what ports are likely to be open in the next couple months?  Florida, Seattle, NJ and California have COVID issues to deal with already.  Maybe TX or Tampa.

If the cruise industry gets this wrong what would be the results?

If cruising cannot resume until passengers are guaranteed to be safe from COVID then . . . . . when.

Congress has long taken a hostile position to the cruise industry.

Look at their prior witch hunts re: crime at sea, pollution, etc.

The cruise industry is no more or less perfect than most others yet is frequently scapegoated IMO.

Don't forget the House majority already requested information from CCL and wants an investigation into what Congress is calling ignoring to shutdown back in late Feb early March.

Lets see on the pollution side at various time both RCL and CCL have pled guilty to felony level violations.  CCL is still under court supervision for its last conviction.  That does not sound like a witch hunt.

NCL was also under DOJ probation back in 2004.
