Conquest 5 - 12 Feb

Recommended Posts

Back today from the Conquest. What a trip. There was a lot of good and some not so good. So let's see if I can put it into perspective and provide a little humor and info at the same time. Darn boat left late. Was scheduled to leave at 4 and it was a bit after 5 when we finally pulled out. So there we were sitting on this great big cruise ship with nothing to do but listen to steel drum music and drink funny little drinks with umbrellas in em. Could have been cruising but noooo.....had to leave late. Obviously Carnival's fault huh?

Dinner in the Monet with Igor and Jurita as waiters. They were great kids. Now I did have to remind her each night that I liked coffee after dinner and Igor forgot my extra salad dressing one night. Actually we didn't eat dinner in there 3 of the 4 nights as we were just not impressed with the menu those nights. When we did eat there it was very good. The Point was fabulous on Tursday evening YUM!! OBTW formal nights are Tuesday and Thursday. Lobster night in the dining rooms is Tuesday.

The buffet was a bit of a disappointment. Truthfully the food was luke warm at best throughout the cruise. This is our sixth cruise with Carnival and we never had this problem before. Of course the cheese burgers and hot dogs were fine - stood there and watched em come off the grill so they were good and hot. Carnival is doing a theme night thing now - one night was "American" another it was "Indian" and another it was "Oriental." We usually like oriental but the stuff they served was basically unrecognizable to us so we did the fish and chips thing at Ser Mur.

Weather was cool first three nights out. You would think Carnival would know better than to provide a cruise through the Caribbean when the weather is less than ideal. I should complain and get a refund - surely they have some control over that - being the worlds largest cruise line and all. And since they didn't do it right I ended up with a cold the night we left Jamaica that precluded me going on my sting ray tour and my scuba trip. Could have gotten a refund on those excursions had I known I was gonna be sick so once again Carnival blew it. Had to be their fault right??

Weather in Jamaica was very nice in the day time. We did Rose Hall. What a view from that place. Just what every one of us would want - minus the ghost of course. Shopping was at two extremes. They took us to the Half Moon Resort shopping area - very high end and then to one of the craft shopping areas - very low end and the Jamaicans there have not changed - very pushy. Getting back on the ship was a major pain. They had one Jamaican security guard processing at least two cruise ships full of passenegers. Lines were long and it took about 45 minutes to get through that hassle.

Grand Cayman weather reportedly was so bad the ship was discusssing turning that day into a day at sea, but instead took us to the south side of Grand Cayman in some protected waters. Tours were done but you had to pay for a cab to George Town and Carnival wanted you back by 2 or 3. Since our Sting Ray thing was not scheduled until noon that was pushing us and of course there were three cruise ships in there so you know what the last tender actions were like. Since the lines had been so bad in Jamaica and my cold was by now in full bloom we passed on our tour. Again there I was sick and Carnival pushing everyone to get back early - it is their fault I didn't get to go - don't you think so??

Was supposed to scuba in Cozumel. Have done that three times now there. Loved it every time. But of course with a cold scuba was out! So we went into the city and hired a horse drawn carriage to tour the city. Lots of damage still very obvious. Weather there was great! Sure after I get sick the weather turns nice - thanks Carnival.

The first major show on board was great. The second was mediocre - was supposed to be a story (put to music) about two people who met on the internet. Might have been cute had the music had anything to do with the story line. I was not impressed. The troop danced well and the singers were great but again the music had nothing to do with the story line so....

Saturday and Saturday night the weather was awful. Seas between 7 and 12 ft and a constant wind around 30 kts. Ugly!! Again I blame Carnival for not fixing that for us. Boat was bouncing around - couldn't really use that expensive balcony so had to go to the casino "some more" and lose some "more" money. Carnivals fault clear as can be. Now don't you think I deserve a refund or at the least a new crusie with out all those issues?

And oh yeah - there were 750 kids on that ship and yep you guessed it we had a run in with the little ones. "One time" there were three of them playing with the elevators. Don't you think that is a terrible way for Camp Carnival to be run. I mean gosh 7 days and 750 kids and they can't control them every single minute of every single day - and just where were those kids parents. Saving chairs some where no doubt!! Carnival you should be ashamed! I demand a refund AND a new cruise!!

OK - having said all of that - and its all true (with minor exceptions of some of the embellishment). There we were crusing the Caribbean in Feb (did you see the weather reports up north today - wow!!) 60 degrees is cool in the Caribbean and damned cold on that balcony. Inspite of it all it was great to get away for a few days even if I did get a cold. Seriously the only real complaint I have against Carnival in all of this is the food on the buffet lines. Not the best showing I have seen. If land based buffets can keep the food at least some semblance of hot so can the ship. See ya next gruise

Just one question: In Jamaica you said there was only one Jamaican officer processing two cruise ships??What does that mean??

Thanks for taking your unpacking time to write us this cool and funny review, truely enjoyed it, had to call Wendy so she could read it too.

I dont mine kids at all but PLEASE, if you take your kid onboard and he/she starts to whine and yell (cry) in the dinning room, please have the common courtesy to remove them from the dinning room asap, before I start a FOOD FIGHT. Thanks

Thanks for the review again, cant wait to read more.

Carnival Please give GR a refund now !!!

I was on the same cruise and totally agree with your report.

We also had a balcony that was not used much. I caught a cold the 2nd night and finally got over it the 6th night. I'm glad I got a fake tan before the cruise. At least I come back with one. The food had been better on our previous cruises. It's tough to keep spending money on the slots because it's too cold to go outside. Oh well... So much for the complaining. Next time I'll go in May.

Other than that, we got away for 7 nights. Just wish it could have been warm and sunny.

Maybe next time.....

In Jamaica, when you were going back to the ship you had to process through Jamaican security to get out of the terminal to the ship. They only had one line going. As I understand it when it got time for the ship to leave Carnival reps went in and pushed things along. They started letting people through with no ck - - if you weren't bringing any bags back. Bottom line was - one line was not anywhere near enough to process all those people in a timely fashion.

My daughter and her husband were on this cruise. They had a great time and I'm glad I am still able to baby-sit (they have a 2 and a 7 year old) so they can re-charge their batteries now-and-then.

They said their table-mates were great and once again they made some 'even after the cruise' friends. They thought the food was a not as good as in the past..and just for the record their cruise experience has been the Inspiration (the week of 9/11!) and the Grandeur of the Seas in '02. They said the dining room was fine but the buffet left a lot to be desired. Not the best of choices and often not hot enough.

She did comment on the last nights entertainment. She said they incorporated picks from kareoke (?) try-outs to be in the stage show and she said it was just great...she mentioned Ricky Martin, Madonna, Britney, Aretha and several more. She said she wished she had tried out as she thought it would have been a blast. Just a word to the wise to all you future cruisers that this could be your chance!!!

All-in-all, they liked the ship and their balcony cabin and had a wonderful time!
