Disney Cruise cancelled through May 2021

Also saw this from WSJ newswire  (sorry couldn't grab link).   Says that while various CCL brands today cancelled all 2021 Alaska sailings to/from Vancouver they are negotiating with US and Canada to try to salvage those to/from Seattle.  Also mentions East coast sailings.  Perhaps there's a slim chance Alaska isn't totally lost for 2021.

Carnival Corp. (CCL) on Wednesday canceled several voyages in Canada for various parts of the year after the Canadian government extended its cruising ban by a year through February 2022.

The move prolongs the cruise operator's hiatus in North America longer than a year since shipboard coronavirus outbreaks brought cruise voyages to a halt last year. Carnival Cruise Line, the company's flagship line, also extended its sailing pause in the U.S. through the end of May.

Holland America Line said it is canceling several Alaska, three Canada and New England and two Pacific Coast cruises in the summer and fall, including all land and sea journeys. It said it hasn't canceled Alaska cruises departing from mid-May and sailing roundtrip from Seattle. Customers of canceled Alaska cruises and land and sea journeys involving a Vancouver gateway can't move to roundtrip Seattle cruises at this time, the company said.

"We must be practical in our approach by acknowledging the limitations put in place by the current Canadian order that requires us to cancel select sailings," Holland America Line President Gus Antorcha said.

The company's Seabourn luxury line canceled 19 voyages scheduled aboard its Odyssey ship in the summer between Vancouver, Canada, and Juneau, Alaska, including one Pacific Coast voyage at the end of the season.

Princess Cruises said it is canceling Alaska seven-day Voyage of the Glaciers cruises between Vancouver, Canada, and Anchorage, Alaska; Pacific Coast sailings that start or end in Vancouver; and the Canadian Adventure sailing roundtrip from Southampton, U.K.

Princess said it is engaging with the U.S. and Canadian governments to try to keep a portion of the Alaska and Canada and New England cruise seasons in 2021. The cruise line said it is still operating the Kenai Princess Wilderness lodge along with McKinley Chalet Resort in Denali and Westmark Fairbanks Hotel this summer. It also said it is working on vacation land package details that will be laid out soon.

The Carnival units said guests can be automatically rebooked on similar voyages in 2022 or receive a refund.

In the U.S., the timing for voyages ultimately depends on receiving a permit from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which is requiring operators to conduct mock sailings and apply for a certificate at least 60 days before offering passenger cruises. A CDC spokesman said no cruise operator has applied for the permit and that it will publish more instructions "in the next few weeks."

Carnival shares rose about 3.8% to $27.47 Wednesday afternoon.

We're 2 months away from May any the lines have no idea what the CDC wants them to do for test cruises.

Not a chance May happens.

If the test cruises can't start in the next couple weeks, June is probably out the window, too.

I don't think there will be test cruises.  I think they will wait until more people are vaccinated and they can get crew that has been vaccinated and they'll start back up with a few ships.  I expect RCI to cancel through May soon.  We went ahead and cancelled our May b2b as I didn't really feel like giving them 10K of my money to sit on so we cancelled before final payment.  One was Canada so we got the deposit refunded.  The other was Bermuda so we got another FCC for the deposit.

According to Travel Weekly, at the earnings call Michael Bayley said the following:

"We've been in regular communication with the CDC at the maritime unit and at the executive level," he said during a call with analysts to discuss the company's fourth-quarter earnings. "We're literally expecting the technical specifications any day soon. It's an intergovernmental process between several agencies within the government that are reviewing the technical specifications. They've assured us that as soon as all of these things come together they want to get us back into operations."

The test cruises are designed to show that a line is successful in mitigating the risk of Covid-19 spread to crew, passengers and communities.

Bayley said that more than 250,000 people had volunteered to go on those trial sailings as passengers. "So plenty of people are interested in cruising," he said.

"Our communication and dialogue with the CDC is productive," Bayley added. "When we have our discussions, it's a relatively open process, and as they've explained to us on many occasions, this really is about what's happening with the virus. They've assured us on several occasions that when these indicators really start move in a very positive way they'll start working with us to get us back into operations.

"And that's exactly what we're seeing now. Every single day I look at the [U.S. Covid case trend line] and it's just plummeting. My sense is we're getting closer and closer to good news."

According to CDC order,  the cruise line must perform a test cruise in order to apply for Conditional Sailing Certificate.

It's not just the CDC, most of the island nations don't want the ships back yet. They don't have the healthcare infrastructure or the resources to deal with increase virus spread. While Grand Cayman has been the only one that has come out to say they don't see cruising return in the current environment, judging by the actions and current procedures, the Bahamas, don't want ships back. Same with Bermuda. It's impossible to have a ship dock for a few hours when a 14 day quarantine is required.

It's not just the CDC, many nations do not want visitors w/o vaccination. And the government agencies are under tremendous pressure from industry/economy to let sailing start. But there's a risk trade off and that's not currently looking favorable. By June/July likely 50-60% of the population will be vaccinated and also international protocols for vaccination documentation (which I can almost guarantee will be required in order to board a ship).

I anticipate Oct-Nov before we see true "normalization" or cruise activity. We will see sailings before then for sure, but it's going to be rough going and I can almost guarantee you a LOT of disappointed passengers when they see most of their favorite activities are restricted (buffets, casinos, theatres, swimming pools, etc.)
