New appreciation for NCL

Let's use your figure, 5%. On a Breakaway class ship that holds 4000 passengers, that's 200 people.

They won't all get sick if the virus gets on board, of course, but even if 5% (your number) of *those* people get infected, your headline isn't "99 percent of NCL passengers return safely from cruise," it's "Covid outbreak on cruise ship rises to double digits."

But if we are talking about vaccinated guest the 5% would be almost completely asymptomatic so it would never make headlines because no one would know (unless they were testing, which I don't think they have to if it is a fully vaccinated cruise).

There ain't no way that 5% of a cruise population is going to get Covid if 100% are vaccinated.  Maybe .0005%  (that's 2 out of 4000, and they'll likely be asymptomatic).  One sneeze isn't going to run a ship aground in Alaska!  (hmmm....why does that sound familiar?)

Yep.  And people who travel more than we do, and we travel 100-150 days a year, every year.  Doesn't mean they are right, or it makes sense, but a big chunk of the world has no intention of ever taking a cruise after what occurred last year.

You had me at "very educated."  😛  If "those types" quit cruising, it will likely just make cruises more enjoyable for the rest of us rats.

The 5% I was talking about is the maximum percentage of people I’ve seen quoted as being at high risk of dying from Covid-19, ie the elderly with 3.8 or more comorbidities. For the rest of the population, the survival rate has been over, yes over 99%. (And that’s BEFORE vaccinations are factored in) I’m just so sick and tired of people and their “what if“ scenarios about a massive outbreak on a cruise ship. Do people even bother to follow the industry? Don’t people realize that cruise ships have been sailing since last summer with hundreds of thousands of passengers and there has never been the massive outbreak so many people are fearing is just sure to happen. I’m so done on this topic. I just wanna get back to cruising and if other people want to be scaredy cats, let them. But not me.

I have purchased a spacesuit with helmet and I am ready to cruise DCGUY64!

Not exactly true.

He has said that the possibility of infection or transmission is "very, very low" but "not impossible."  That is not "prevents."

It is, for all practical purposes, "prevents".  That should be good enough for almost everyone.  Anyone who insists  upon perfection will be disappointed.  The only way to achieve 100% probability of no infections on a cruise is to ban cruises.

A little CruiseCritic.com history.  A Op-Ed is created.  It either starts on the topic of Covid and Vaccine passports or gets there through a comment that hijacks the post.  It is the posters are PC for a while then they get frustrated with almost always one person whom copes a attitude of "I Know Everything".  This is not the same person every time.  Comments get more harsh and the Moderator shuts down the topic so no one else can comment.  This has happened on five Op-Eds on different brands and topics over the last two weeks.

If a cruise line wants my money, they have to do a fully vaccinated cruise.  In the future, I would be open minded.  For now, everyone needs to be vaccinated.  If they don't, they don't get my cash.  My right.  If you are upset that a cruise line wants to make sure you are vaccinated, then don't give them your money.  If my figures are accurate, 80% of cruise goers want a fully Vaccinated cruise.  Want to talk politics, go to a political site.  Want to talk cruises, you are in the right place.  Want to debate me and be hateful, I will ignore you because I want to talk about cruising, relaxing, enjoying, eating, shows, snorkeling, and play bingo.

I agree that the safest way to restart is 100% vaccinated cruises. I am curious where you got your figure that 80% of cruisers want fully vaccinated? If it is 80% of CC members, we make up approximately 4% of the market (although I have never seen a formal study to back up that figure, I do suspect we are a very small percentage based on membership here vs cabins sold). If it is 80% of all those who want to book a cruise in the near future (CC and general public), I would say that is still a very small percentage of the overall market, but regardless, I'm interested in how you came up with 80%.

Based on my limited research, it appears to me that getting bodies onboard ships is going to be the biggest challenge to recovering the industry. There is pent up demand with FCC's so we won't really know the extent of perception damage many months, but I anticipate lower product demand for several years to come.

On another note, I believe there might be a niche market developing for cruisers who only want to cruise on 100% vaccinated ships in the future. But if I remember correctly, Carnival tried to offer one ship that was entirely smoke free back in the 90's and even though it appeared most wanted non-smoking, the experiment failed because they couldn't fill the ship. My point being that those who want 100% vaccinated need to have be high enough in bookings to off set those customers who can not cruise due to the restriction. At this point, NCL is only offering 100% vaccinated through October 31st.

Of course, this is pure speculation on my part, but it's interesting to me to watch the industry unfold. I enjoy talking about cruising.  Isn't today the first sailing of Celebrity out of St. Maartin?

Thank you. As I suspected, the data is skewed and can not be generalized to a broader population. The survey was administered by Cruise Critic and consisted of a very small sample size (only 5,025 members). Of which, 69% had taken 10 or more cruises!!! These are likely true cruise enthusiasts who have FCC to use and realize that the safest way to restart, remain mask-less, and have little chance of a ship quarantine is to require 100% vaccinations.

I thought the third paragraph begs the question; Do cruise enthusiasts really want 100% vaccinated cruising or do they want mask-less cruising and believe the only way to take off the mask is to board 100% vaccinated? The part about DeSantis further muddies the survey waters.

This survey fun reading, but it is impossible to draw conclusions about Johnny Public's views of 100% vaccinated cruising. I'm not saying you (sthrngary) were making that gigantic leap, but I do think its important to note the survey demographics to limit broad generalizations.

No problem.  CruiseCritic.com = Cruises; Reddit Politics = Politics; You Tube Slot Jackpots = Slot Machines.  Something for everyone on Social media.

Allow me to give everyone a new topic.  "All-Inclusive Over the Water Bungalows" On an NCL Getaway Cruise out of Port of New Orleans November 2019, I saw this excursion.  I said, "NO WAY I would pay THAT kind of Money for a few hours."  Then I showed the picture to my wife and she said, "It is our vacation."

Folks, this excursion is great.  they have a fruit basket waiting for you.  A bottle of Sparkling Wine.  The picture represents the place accurately.  The lunch was Caribbean Lobster and Steak.  Slightly above average. Open complementary Bar.  The key is to set expectations.  The right there is horrible, the right back to the ship everyone is loose and had a few.  We sang the whole way back.

Not for everyone, my favorite excursion in 41 years.  Cruise Well Everyone.

That sounds like a hoot!  What port was that in?

Rotan!  It was crazy because the ship could not dock at the pier.  Getting in the shuttles to the dock was awful.  Almost like it was the first time they did that.  The confusion at the port was worse.  I looked at my wife and said, "Time to make this the time of our life."  She said, "Please don't.  You embarrass me when you get like this."

I did not listen, I began making friends on the awful ride to the resort.  Once we go there, I started ordering shots for every one in a bungalow.  We all got floats, get in the water and stayed there for hours.  We visited, talked, did shots and eat lunch all from the water.

Back on the ship, every time I went to a public area I heard, "There he is, Is Gary!"  I love that.

My next cruise is on the NCL Joy, In the end of November. Same itinerary.  Already booked this so we are set to go. This time, we are talking my adult Daughter and her partner.  My wife said, "Been there and done that. Do we have to do it again?"  I simply don't listen to her.  Shots are on the way.

When life hands you lemons, make shots of lemonade.  I'll have to look into that the next time I'm there.  Hope you have just as much fun the second time around! 😀

I love your attitude! We have the Haven booked for February 27 to the Bahamas from New York and September 18 from New York to New England/Canada. I hope ( pray) they sail. And I hope NCL sticks to only vaccinated. Now if we can only get rid of the smoking in the casino. Sigh.

Depending on the ship you are one, it might have a Smokeless Casino.  I know the Bliss and the Encore do if I am not mistaken.  I love to smoke cigars so I go the the Cigar lounge or the top Haven Sundeck in the front where you can smoke.  Thank you on my attitude comment.  I try.  I get frustrated sometimes because folks lose sight of why we go to different social media platforms.  I deleted my FaceBook, Twitter, and Instagram.  Never been happier.  I am much less cranky.

Have a great trip and always look for a way to make some one else trip better.  It makes your trip better as well.
