Carnival Panaroma/Long Beach - Not Popular?

Recommended Posts

Panorama always shows up as one of the cheapest options when I search for 7 day cruises. Horizon (8 days ) are typically the most expensive. I'd say the 6 day Horizon prices are probably comparable to the 7 day panorama.

I think there is something to the California/Florida thing. I think it's weather. I think it's ports. I think it's proximity to a major airport. Unless you fly into Long Beach you have about an hour ride from LAX. On Feb 29th watching Panorama come in it was in the 50's which is cold for me the day before March. The first and last sea days (March 1st and 7th) were chilly. People were wearing hoodies on lido during the day.  The weather was great in Mexico. But getting down there and coming back....it's definitely better out of Florida, New Orleans, and Galveston. December and 40 degrees in Galveston or New Orleans you don't know until debarkation morning. It doesn't effect sea days. It does out of California. But other than that I loved the ship and the ports. Especially Mazatlan.

It’s not due to popularity. The fact that Corporate has scheduled Panorama as the 8th ship in the fleet on the restart & California as the 4th restart state speaks volumes $$$$$. It’s colder this time of year along the Pacific (says the California girl born, raised 🤣) and maybe that has something to do with it. I will say this much, I’m booked for 12/31/21 and the Havana cabins been sold out for WEEKS.

Nailed it.

The west coast of Mexico is more unspoiled, but have you ever swam in the Pacific Ocean?  Compared to crystal clear water with beautifully colored fish in the Caribbean?  Oh, and the water is between refreshing and warm, unlike the frigid Pacific.  I've been wanting to take my daughter on a cruise to Cabo San Lucas (I was there before she was born) but I miss swimming in warm ocean water sooooo much.

Visit June/July/Aug, water temps are  plenty warm in Cabo.

Thank you for all those responses. I am always impressed with the knowledgable answers in here.

Weather is colder.. good to know. I'm in Ottawa and it sometimes gets to -22 F in the winter. so anything warmer then that is worth it 🙂

I have been following Disneyland and opening in California.

The comment about how it's the 8th ship to start is a valid point. Hopefully they will solve any issues before they get to the Panaroma.

In regards to it be right before Christmas my mom would be very upset if we were not home for Christmas which is why we aren't picking a "Christmas" cruise.

School is over on the 17th, so the plan would be to fly out and cruise the 18th to 24th. fly home and be home for Christmas.

So based on all that feedback I think I've made a good choice with that cruise as I get a good deal, it's an awesome ship, and might be a bit quieter 🙂

Oh and I'll be suntanning by the waterpark during the day, casino at night 🙂

K_e_short, this is a solid plan! You did very well 👍 thank you for prompting me to look into it as well, I learned something new! When I was on the booking engine I was like… “hmmm, K e short is on to something here!”

If at all possible, try to get a cabin in the Havana area, assuming that no one is under 12 in your family.

I concur!

When I go back I think it will have to be one of my August cruises.

Havana isn't availaible for free and my son loves waterslides. I want a Spa Balcony on Deck 12 so we just walk right out to the water slides.

IMO, another reason for this particular cruise being lightly sold so far is that airfare during Christmas seems to be notoriously high!

My other least desirable option is Freedom out of Miami after Christmas and that flight is twice as expensive ($2000 CAD over $1000 CAD).

Oh I'm not talking about this year. This August is Mardi Gras for me. I'm talking 2022 or 2023.

Specifically the December 18th cruise out of Long Beach on the Panaroma.

As others have mentioned, that week before Christmas is still pretty dead. I currently have an MSC cruise with a deposit (don’t know yet if I’ll actually stick to it or not) which departs from Miami on December 18th and the reason why I booked it is because it’s dirt cheap. Checking rates for it this week, the rates have actually gone down even more.

Cruise Lines are gradually adding more and larger ships to the west coast which is creating more competitive pricing. But Mexican Riviera itineraries have always been less popular than Caribbean cruises, which is why for a long time there wasn’t much competition in this market.

We are booked on the Panorama for February 2022 (at rock bottom prices). It will be my first time sailing the Mexican Riviera and I’m excitedly looking forward to it.

Some years we get very little snow. Last Christmas we had a green Christmas.

Two years ago we had 115 inches fall throughout the winter. (No that is not a typo). The snow covered my BBQ.

My son (14 years old) and I are awesome travellers so being stranded places would just be in adventure.

Winterlude must have been waterlude.

Well Saint Greg, I just wrote a Cruise Critic suggestion request they hire you as a review writer for the restart of Carnival Panorama in August. Hopefully you will consider and negotiate if an offer is made 😉

Not to be a dead horse about CA but I heard this morning regarding the "re-opening" of CA, that the CA .gov will still require travelers on trains, airplanes etc, to wear masks.

Now I am not a lawyer and I am sure once a boat leaves the dock, it might not apply but I am sure CA will require masks on (at least) embarkation day.

I am pretty sure that masks are required on trains, airplanes, taxis, ride shares, and buses across the United States.  I think the CDC is requiring even vaccinated people to wear masks on embarkation day while in the terminal.

Even Royal is bringing a ship back to the west coast, they haven't cruised out of CA in a long while. Navigator of the Seas will be coming in summer 2022. February is a great time to cruise the Mexican Riviera. Anytime during January through the end of April, sometimes even into may is optimal IMO. It's a great itinerary and the weather is perfect in Mexico during that time.

Ah yes, I do remember the CDC thing in the news story. Makes sense.

Thanks for clarifying!

They will more than likely defer, like they are doing with the whole Cal Osha fiasco. The governor said he would use an executive order if needed, in order to align the mask requirements for workers with CDC guidelines. I don't see him going out of his way to ensure masks are worn on cruise ships as It goes against the realignment efforts with the CDC. Plus I'm sure there will be pressure to end the emergency deceleration as they have moved up the recall vote by a few months. I'm sure that will be fodder if it's still in place. People are already attacking him on it since all the other orders were rescinded today and the state fully reopened.

I've done a bit of traveling the past couple months. Every airport, plane, bus, taxi, uber, lyft has required masks.

YUP

Shouldn't be required one through the terminal and on the ship though. "outdoor areas of a conveyance"

Sure. Since it's CDC rules for transportation, I get it.

It's just getting to be tiresome to keep track of it all. Worse then an Super Bowl office pool.

Here locally (San Diego), masks are pretty much going away..."For San Diego County theme parks, like the San Diego Zoo, SeaWorld San Diego, and Legoland, fully vaccinated visitors will not be required to wear masks."

"Petco Park plans to reopen at full capacity on June 17. In doing so, the ballpark will not require face coverings but several health and safety policies will remain, like thorough cleaning; touchless soap, towel, and sanitizer stations; UV light handrails; and the team's current bag and outside food and drink policies. Petco Park said it will not require proof of vaccination but "strongly recommend that all fans get vaccinated."
