Live from Apex - 6/19

Do you know if they were offering paid cabin upgrades when you checked in, just in case I don't get a Moveup offer/email. We are on the 17th July sailing.  Many thanks

I had to ask for MoveUp to be sent out but I think everyone ended up getting it at the same time. It was not 30 days prior by any stretch. Offer was posted in the moveup thread by a couple folks already who got them for our cruise.

Thanks Pat, same here 🥰

11 months from today, we're booked on Edge (sadly, I sooo wanted to experience Apex, but next year's itineraries include the Fjords [which, poor us, have already done 😁] and Israel...).

Fingers crossed for all of us avid cruisers 🌷

Read posts above, I mentioned there has been no request to wear masks while sunbathing or in the pool (this is consistent with Greece guidance on land). Walking to or from the pool areas, we wear masks....and always indoors unless eating or drinking (which is clearly applied liberally as just having food or drink in front of you seems to be sufficient justification for no mask).  For example, we wear our.mask while being seated for dinner, but are quickly given a small paper envelope to our them in and have them off through the whole service, whether we are actively eating or not.  It's really not very onerous. At shows, we're typically having a drink and thus don't wear our mask.

Agree with ATLJC, mask wearing was clearly the norm in Athens, but in Santorini and now in Mykonos, looking like 75% of locals not really bothering. Exception seems to be food establishments where masking is more common by staff.  But even inside Santorini shops, few staff wearing masks.  I spoken with one shopkeeper who said 90% of the island is vaccinated and they are ready to get back to normal.

A couple of ship notes:

Eden is a gorgeous space, but seems underutilized.... I suspect due to low passenger numbers (they are clearly trying to concentrate entertainment in fewer venues to encourage "decent" attendance.

Caravan was VERY enjoyable last night and we would see it again.  Short but sweet.

We upgraded to "stream" wifi and I think it's abysmal (for the pricing).  However, I suspect they actually prioritize the popular streaming "services" as they work well....but we purchased to get more usable "quick" wifi and for regular browsing I find it still very unsatisfactory (speedtest registers 2.5Mbs down).

Any other questions?

Just chiming in to confirm as I’m also on board and others may have noticed that I took an interest in this topic on other threads.

‘Enforcement’ so to speak on the ship is light but most are computing so it’s not needed.  No one minds when you’re outside lounging, drinking, smoking, etc without a mask on.  Interestingly about half of the folks in the casino had no masks last night (sitting at tables even) yet no sign of enforcement.  Seems like the staff aren’t really interested in confronting anyone which I can understand given the full vax rate and low occupancy.

In port, the ship’s tour operators have been impotently trying to enforce mask wearing even outside.  However, when folks saw that 90% or so of locals and other tourists aren’t wearing them and it’s 90 degrees out compliance has quickly declined.  We went off on our own in Mykonos and never wore a mask until the boat ride back and never felt out of place nor did anyone say anything to us.  Restaurant employees commonly wore them but uncommon in shops.

I can report back on Cyprus and Rhodes but we feel comfortable not wearing them outside for the most part so far.  It’s amazing how annoying it now feels having not worn them for ~two months in the US.

It was also underutilized on The Edge pre-pandemic.

Someone was asking about Eden - the space feels the same and absolutely worthless as it does on Edge. The ramp of wasted space and the odd seating with the silly cafe. Dining room and second level still inaccessible from their respective levels but the lift is available. Royal does this concept 10x better on the Quantum class and they should leave it there.

Luminae - night 1 was usual night 1 hiccups plus a first real service for them all in a year. Night 2 was fine tuned. Food is their menu plus the classic MDR. Creme Brûlée is now missing from the classic MDR desert list but the waiter graciously offered to have it at the ready for one of our party tonight, knowing it was a request.

Retreat Deck - a slight improvement on Edge (I believe) but it might just be I was so scarred from the solstice class version i thought anything would be better.  I saw plenty of loungers and cabanas and shade and towels. Nice amount of staff. I don’t think they have a kitchen built into this one for food so it still comes from downstairs. Haven’t tried the lunch/snacks but it’s on the agenda for tomorrow’s sea day. Very few folks up there at any given time.

Retreat Lounge - same exact setup as Edge….but with a bar! And the concierge has a host stand to use. They reallly don’t want you walking up to the bar, but the service has been so slow I see many folks trying to do just that. It’s terribly confusing to have about 6 service staff to a single bartender ratio and not be able to have nearly instantaneous service. It is decently used in evenings so far. Snacks are fair; mostly charcuterie and similar items.

Casino - snagged a photo of some machines for you. Banks of 2 or 3 have one “out of services machine. Larger ones are every other seat. You are not actually restricted from playing them but the concept is that there should be space between gamblers.

It is a beautiful space--and it appears the outside seating could be akin to the Waterfront on NCL.

Hopefully they will adjust & turn it into more like the Music Hall on the Anthem--we (us & out 3 young adult kids) were there nearly every night--Silent Disco, karaoke, bands--we sat upstairs & played card games while listening)

Thanks Kreative, that is very helpful and informative on all counts!  I guess the classic MDR additions are better than nothing, so I do hope the variety is good for us, but I understand you can make special requests if need. I am also looking forward to the new steak / fine cut restaurant.

Interesting about the retreat deck and having shades, I wasn't sure there was that many, but with the hot Med sun, I am sure they will be welcome! Also interesting about the casino and having some machines out of use - I guess it makes sense and with reduced capacity, we should be OK.

Thanks again for taking time out to replay, continue to enjoy!

I'll have to strongly disagree about the Eden Cafe. The food there is excellent and I've had breakfast and especially lunch there the two sailings on the Edge (The brownies and chocolate Chip cookies there are amazing and cannot be found at the Buffet).

@Kreative03 and @ocdb8r ,

Thank you for taking time from your precious vacation, it is much appreciated.

I was booked 3 times on Apex, the last one for September, before the "change"....

Since the "change" involved neighboring islands and my own country, I switched to Edge for May 2022.

Enjoy !!! 💐

Greatly appreciate this thread and our OP plus others on the cruise adding.

But I’ll also disagree that Eden is a ‘wasted space’. The ramp has a number of sitting areas along it that give a lot of privacy for sitting, reading, talking and for us playing cards! We love it. Eden itself is a great place to have a drink, socialize and enjoy. Gets crowded at ‘drink time’ major social times, but rest of time is perfect…..in my opinion. Dining was fun and unique. Not something we’d do more than once per cruise, but fun to experience…..in my opinion.

Sounds very exciting!

We are on a b2b for 24th and 31st July, also in a suite, so it is interesting to hear about Luminae menu dining options and what else you can have (I liked the fact you could order off MDR), plus the retreat deck - how is that working out? - and of course the lounge observations.

Have you been to the casino yet - how does that work with the machines?

Thank you, and continue to have a great cruise.

We cruised on the Edge March 2019 and they had just added the every night items. At the time of our cruise you were not able to order off the MRD menu. The kitchens are so far apart from one another. Remember Luminae is all the way forward on Edge Class ships. We were also told that Luminae does not have a kids lunch menu.

Sorry if I misread your post but  we are on Apex Sept 11, 2022 from Amsterdam to Rome. The itinerary was perfect for us with Rome the only repeat port. Happy sailing

You have an amazing itinerary.

On a previous cruise, we specifically chosed one which included Bilbao -- DH likes Guggenheim museums... Beautiful city.

We've also been to Gibraltar, Lisbon, and many many times to Rome and Amsterdam.

Our May 21st itinerary includes: Rhodes, Mykonos and Chania (Crete), all new ports for us.

Happy sailing to you too 😁

- many crew received their second shot on 6/13 (per social media posts). There is also unsubstantiated speculation that most only have gotten their first. Either way, the ship is sailing with crew not fully protected and under the guise of full vaccination.

This should make us hopeful that they will lift the mask requirement 2 weeks later on 6/28!

Hi! I will be sailing on Apex next week and have a question for current passengers on the Greek Passenger Locator Form. Did you fill one out for arrival to Greece by plane (noting the ship as one of the places you will stay), then another for arrival by cruise with the date of disembarkation?

I am getting in a day early and am confused by what to do here. Appreciate any support!!

Dani, we also loved Bilbao, doing it for the first time on our Edge TA.  It was a great surprise and we had a Tour by Locals tour...exceptional!  Actually, cannot wait to return!

I think is because of AI too many passengers using WiFI.

Not sure I understand. Aren't the streaming and surf customers competing for the same resource?  If surf is bad I'm not sure why streaming would be better.
