Carnival adds new smoke-free casino to the Breeze, Magic and Dream

It's all in marketing.  Imagine an enclosed casino area for smokers.  Carnival could pipe in premium first-hand smoke.  The money that players will save by not having to buy tobacco products will probably go into slot machines.  Hey Carnival beards, you're welcome.

 

Obviously, the projections made by corporate indicated that revenue created by the casino bar paled to adding more machines.  Maybe too many were taking up space socializing with not enough drinking and gambling.  I don't know.  It's a tough balance for a company to optimize profits while maintaining a basic product that is attractive on its own.

 

Unfortunately for Carnival, I don't gamble, drink, shop, get spa-ed, or specialty dine.  My wife, on the other hand....

I used to smoke. It bothers me today. But reformed smokers can be the worst. Carnival has spaces unused or left open. Swaths at times. Serenity decks on some ships filled up some spaces. I believe the Paradise and Elation's top deck now has changed a lot and some sort of configuration can be set up for smoking. That can be another partying area if they wanted it to be.

That's true at the bars because there weren't even any video poker machines in the surface of the bar to play. Most shoreside casinos let those at the bar gamble while they drink and smoke. Carnival's oversight to provide gaming at the bar made this an easy decision for them.

If nothing else, with only 7 passenger days under her belt by the time we board, hopefully there won't be too much embedded cigarette smoke yet!

Carnival will be adding non smoking casinos as a test to the three Dream class ships in what is now the conference room on Deck 4.

I hope the crew who work the smoking casino get additional compensation.  Carnival should staff the same tenured dealers in the same (smoking or non-smoking) casinos and x-ray their lungs every couple years.  That smokers casino is going to be like being inside a chimney without all the non-smokers.  But I imagine they'll be more at ease not having to worry about people complaining about all the smoke.

Hopefully the test goes well.  Seems like much better use of space

I really like the idea of non smoking casinos.  I like to play the slot machines from time to time, but really dislike my clothing smelling like smoke or me breathing in someone else's smoke.

I think the banning of smoking in public buildings, restaurants, public areas etc. was the beginning of the “I have my rights” movement. And just like mask wearing which is not so much to protect yourself as it is to protect others, or vaccinations which are to protect not only yourself but others by disrupting the chain the virus needs to mutate, 

smokers “rights” never take in consideration what smoking in enclosed areas does to everyone else.

There’s nothing worse than putting on fresh laundered clothes only to have them stink with the putrid stale smell of smoke, let alone what it does to our health. Our “rights” as Americans can only go as far as when they don’t trample the rights of most everyone else.

Considering the level of smoking in the crew's home countries, this really isn't logical.

they got this backwards should make the conference casino area smoking and make the original or main casino non-smoking since everyone walk through the main casino. they could close off the conference casino to keep smoke out of rest of public areas. NCL Bliss has this and it is great for all

It was really just rhetorical, but being subject to second-hand smoke as a part of your job is clearly an occupational hazard.  Granted taking the job is voluntary, which was why the comment was just rhetoric - nothing to do with what percentage of crew's home countries smoke, as they can just avoid smoky areas at home.

What I mean by percentage of smokers in their home countries, is that probably most of the crew smoke, as I know from first hand experience.

Im more concerned about splitting of the gamblers and their money......It will definitely change the dynamics at the tables im sure by taking a group of people out of the mix.

I can recall one run I was having at a blackjack table with a chainsmoker sitting right next to me. I'm not a superstitious person, but I didn't want anything to change at that table!

I have someone in a one of my roll calls on the Breeze right now.  She said the non-smoking casino is really dead. Also it is forever to get drinks because the wait staff has to go back up to deck 5 casino for the drinks.

If they do like they used to do when smoking was on one side and non on the other, all the good slots people like to play are on the smoking side! Guess that’s on purpose. We usually go to the casino in the early morning before it gets crowded.

Every smokeless casino or section I have ever played in seems to have the tightest games.

 

I believe they're tighter because the casino has to make up for the lower revenue the smokeless areas generate.

 

People say they want smokeless but they're always the slowest areas or casinos.

 

Carnival even tried entire smokeless cruises, and it failed.

 

I'm fine with having them, but I won't play in them

Doubtful. The Paradise was the first smoke-free cruise ship and it only last for fours years. The Paradise's casino would usually be empty on most sailings.

 

In the book "Selling The Sea", Bob Dickinson is quoted in saying:

Due to poor revenue, Carnival decided to discontinue the smoke-free policy in December 2003, claiming that non-smokers tend to not drink or gamble as much as those accustomed to smoke.

In CA it's much the same. They have small smoke free boxes at the Indian casinos but they are usually sparsely filled. There are usually a few older clientele in there on oxygen tanks and/or a few others but it's just not a happening place.
