This picture could be why they did away with them, having people that close to the bridge could present a security issue.  And no I don't think they can just lock the doors, I don't think that's legal on a ship.

The gym is on deck 9, the bridge is on deck 8. 

There is no open deck forward on deck 9.

Even when sailing on vistas, I always forget about that little spot, I rarely go in the gym. 

 

Then how'd they get a picture of the bridge through that window?

SightCRR's pictures are of the Maasdam, that has an open deck in front for the gym; Nieuw Amsterdam does not have it.
