I am also boarding panorama on Saturday and received the same email.  See excerpt below.  I am a rule follower, but Im not sure I’ll be happy wearing a mask walking the decks (not around others) or in my clamshell in the Havana.

No.  I am relaying what they said, not whit I think they said or wish they said so I could justify things.  They want people wearing masks both for their own health as well as people respecting that it is part of their job.  No maybe about it,

I'm a very social person and often have extended conversations with the crew; most told me they hate wearing masks and stated they do not wear masks in the crew only areas.  Everyone who mentioned their contact said they were still on their first contract since the restart and are extremely nervous about making a mistake that prevents them from receiving another contract.  The pool of crew awaiting for a contract (supply) far exceeds the available jobs (demand) and we can now add the Crystal Cruise crew to that pool.  They all dream to work for Virgin Voyages where they receive a salary, benefits, free internet and the best free crew food at sea.

Sounds like the ship crews are just like 99% of the working population. Including elected individuals.

I do not doubt you at all.  It's quite possible the crew are telling us what we want to hear, or we are selecting them somehow.  I spoke mainly with wait staff, chefs  and photographers.  I cannot explain the difference.

And I would think the Crystal people have a better chance at the best jobs right now.  There is no question masks or no masks, this is really a terrible time for crew.

Yup....only on here do people try to create the perception that the crew is fully bought into the mask narrative.  The ones I have talked to basically model what I see around me at home and work in real life.  They see the mask as an annoyance and are wearing it because someone told them they had to.

I apologize for misreading your post.  Personally I wish they would start enforcing the rules or get rid of them.  I prefer them to be in effect, but I hate expecting them to be in effect, then they really are not.  Do one or the other so people can make an informed decision as to whether to sail or not.  There are far too many people having to ask about mask enforcement from both sides of the issue.

I once had a college professor say the two worst laws ever are speeding and alternate side of the street parking. He said that those laws are always broken with no consequences. And once you break a law without consequences, breaking the next one becomes much easier.

Amazing, they think exactly like you do.  And 99% of your world agrees with you.  Yep.

Excellent example, and very true.

And I doubt that, as much as I want to agree with you. I suggest, the crew is being very candid and sincere. It's a sad situation, and will not improve, until these looney mandates are rescinded.

They do....open your eyes.  Look at the Super Bowl last night....70k people from all over the world, all genders, races and political affiliations.....not a mask in sight.

My eyes are open, We just see different worlds.  You choose yours and I'll choose mine.

Then I cannot explain the difference in responses we got.  I know I am not making up what I am saying, and I honestly don't think you are.  It may be a ship by ship difference, different "cultures" on different ships.  Or maybe they were afraid of being honest with me, I'll admit that is a possibility  But I do find it amazing that most everyone around almost everyone agrees with what that person thinks.  We really are isolating ourselves from other ideas and increasing living in echo chambers.

Exactly.  This pretty much sums up the feelings of the majority of people in our country.  I am sure the crew members would much prefer to work without masks.  I feel sorry for them to have to wear them all day, same with people on land who work in restaurants.

As far as the rules, they should be followed.  If people don't like them, they should choose a cruise or vacation where they can follow the rules.  Nothing is more annoying than someone who agrees to a rule and then puts up a tantrum when they are asked to follow it.

Yikes! I switched my April cruise from Panorama to Vista, looks like that was a good decision. I don’t understand though how they can have different mask protocols on the Panorama than the ones listed on the Carnival website. 🤷‍♀️

Thanks for posting as I thought I was going crazy.  We received the same message which is why I started the thread. I guess we will gauge the pulse of the ships mask enforcement.

Did you see the Super Bowl last night?

The "science" conveniently changed just before the Super Bowl. Too many celebs attending and they can't be expected to follow any of the draconian rules....perfect example was when the Cal Governor attended the NFC Championship game in the same stadium 2 weeks prior (completely maskless) #hipocrate

The science changed, whereas the séance simply drones on and on.

Okay, there are sooo many threads about masking protocols with many people (who have not cruised since the masking protocols) worrying about "the rules" and how it will impact their cruising experience.

I can only speak from my personal experience on my B2B cruises on the Magic in January....it ain't that serious folks!

On both cruises the overwhelming majority of people complied with the rules and wore masks in the elevators and indoor spaces but removed them when outdoors.  No, they are not expecting you to wear a mask while laying out by the pool on the lido deck or in the serenity area or in the hot tubs or T-pool (if you're on a ship with a T-pool).

On our cruises, to be honest, most people didn't wear masks while sitting at the Alchemy bar drinking even.  They were not enforcing "sip in cover" at the bars at all whether it was the Alchemy bar, casino bar, atrium bar, Red Frog pub or any other bar indoor or outdoors.

Now they DID stress sip and cover at the casino table games and in the comedy club.

All in all, the mask wearing was not nearly as big a deal as we were worried it would be before going on our cruises.  In fact, we have a summer cruise booked with the kiddos and another one booked for next January.  The hope is that there will be no masking required by the time we cruise again but if it is required....so be it; we'll still have fun.

Just go on your trip and have fun...and stop worrying so much people! 🙂

Happy sailing all!

From Carnival's website (updated February 12, 2022)

All guests, ages two and above, are required to wear masks at all times when indoors, except when eating or drinking or when in their own staterooms and when outdoors if in large gatherings and physical distancing cannot be maintained. As advised by health experts, guests are recommended to use higher-grade masks indoors (such as surgical or KN95) that have two or more layers, completely cover the nose and mouth, fit snugly against the sides of the face and have a nose wire.

All guests must wear masks during the entire embarkation and debarkation process (at the home port and ports of call, including the onboard pre-debarkation process), during any Carnival-approved shore excursions and while on any transportation vehicles, including water shuttles. Additionally, when going ashore, guests must be prepared to follow all local guidance regarding masks and physical distancing. The status of local guidelines will be shared with guests prior to debarkation at the destination.

Vaccinated guests are not required to maintain physical distance on board the ship.

It is recommended that unvaccinated guests maintain physical distancing as follows:

  • Indoors – Remain at least 6 feet from others not in your cruise companion group. As such, we encourage you to take the stairs whenever possible, if you are able to do so.
  • Outdoors – Remain at least 3 feet from others when not wearing a mask and not in your cruise companion group.

Or maybe they just want to do the job they signed up for and do not like to play the "mask police".

"Just" north of SD? I'm in Oceanside and I know neither of us live "just" north of SD. 😃

LOL....I used to say between San Diego and Los Angeles but that never sounded quite right either LOL.  I should just say "I live in wine country".  How about this weather right, talk about a night and day difference....
