Your input requested.

we fly into IAH on a Tuesday at about 5:30PM. We jump on the ship on Wednesday morning.

So, we either grab a hotel near IAH, have dinner, grab some sleep, and grab transportation to Galveston Wednesday morning.

or

We grab our luggage, get transportation to Galveston, check into hotel about 7:30PM, hope to find some dinner, then get some sleep. Then get up in the morning and mosey on over to the ship.

So,,,, what are your thoughts? Stay near IAH or get to the port city and eat a late dinner?

TIA

It's a wash.  Hotels are usually cheaper at IAH than the island as some of the hotels will tack on a resort fee.

5:30pm is still going to have some lingering rush traffic.. being on the island by 7:30 sounds optimistic to me, and there might not be as much open for dinner after 8pm. But there's value in getting all the stress and hassle over with in one day.

If you do stay at the airport and wait until 9:30am to leave IAH, you'll miss the morning rush.  You might get a better deal on Uber or black car pricing as well.

Another option for you, split it up. Spend the night in the Clear Lake / Webster / Kemah area. It's half the way between IAH and Galveston, and there are plenty of restaurants in the area.
