Around the world or just around one "side"?

Just came across Regent's 2025 WC. It's 150 days, but doesn't go around the world. It goes from Miami south to S. America and around Cape Horne and then on to New Zealand, Australia, Indonesia and north, then over to Alaska and back.

I would love to visit all those places, but my bucket list is around the globe, so this one will not be for us. Anyone else feel the same about Around the World cruises?  :)

Calling that a World Cruise is a travesty, it nothing more than a Grand Voyage.

That is an interesting itinerary and one that I might consider after I had sailed a world cruise.  I have booked cruises that had a regional itinerary, but, that was after I had sailed on a world cruise.  I define a world cruise as one that starts in Port A and returns to Port A after sailing a circumnavigation of the globe.

I agree. I wouldn't mind that cruise, just want to do the "Around the world" cruise first.  🙂

if you consider a World Cruise only a cruise where you actually see everything, it might be difficult to achieve. There are only so many places you can visit in the average 120-150 day World Cruises. Royal Caribbean 278 (?) might offer most places. I am booked on 2 Costa Cruises. The itinerary 2024 might be more what you will consider a World Cruise, since it actually goes around the World. 2023 covers Africa, South America, East coast of the US, India, Middle East and plenty of places in Europe but not Australia and Asia or Northern Europe. It will take quite a few cruises to cover all the places you might want to see.  On the 2024 cruise  I booked the smaller ports in the Pacific, South Korea and Sri Lanka will be new to me and I will enjoy returning to all other ports even all the more familiar European destinations. My 2023 cruise, some might consider just a Grand Voyage, I have not seen the ports in Africa and off Africa, like Mauritius yet, neither India or the other Middle East ports besides Haifa. Also the islands off Portugal will be new to me. I suggest just pick what interests you most. So Royal Caribbean might be your best bet if you don't mind 9 month on one voyage.

Actually, my idea of an around the world cruise is the idea of circumnavigating the globe. Starting in one port and ending in the same and crossing all time zones. After that, I'd love to go on more specialized cruises where the areas are more important. 🙂

My only world cruise so far has been a similar cruise on Crystal in 2016.  We started in Miami, through the Panama Canal to San Francisco.  Then the world cruise started.  It was a total of 120 nights.  We got to see so much of Asia that it satisfied us as a World Cruise.  Start and end didn’t mean that much to us,

 

Will be on Regent in 2024!

How was Crystal? We had planned on their website to do their F1 in Monaco in 2023. Were going to put down a deposit this past spring... 

 

Yes, it doesn't necessarily have to be starting and ending in the same port, but should be pretty close. In the end though, I'm always willing to go on any cruise. I'm always happy on the water. 🙂

Crystal was a lovely product that unfortunately never made a profit.  Great onboard program with an abundance of onboard activities and entertainment.  Service wonderful and specialty restaurants two of the best.  
 

We were booked on the 2022 Crystal world cruise but fortunate for us, we cancelled last June and received our full deposit last July.  So many people still have a lot of money invested in a non-existing cruise line.  
 

Yes, I totally understand the happiness received from a sea view!

The problem with a true circumnavigation is that you either have to spend even more time (and thus money) on the cruise to truly see all the continents and the ports therein, or have a lot of seas days as you trot fast to traverse long distances, and you wind up missing those great smaller ports that make a world cruise a true adventure.

My idea of a world cruise is to board the ship and disembark in the same port X number of days later after circumnavigating the globe.  Anything else is a grand voyage.

 

Don't buy a Volkswagen and call it a Porsche.

By the "starting and ending at the same port" standard, we haven't been on any World Cruises, though we spent 96 days on the Pacific Princess in 2018 sailing west from LA to FLL, and 121 days this year on the Viking Star, sailing south from LA, round the Horn of South America, up to Uruguay, across to the Med, on to Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Israel, Turkey, Greece, the Dalmatian coast, Italy, Spain and disembarking in Bergen before flying home.(Here are some of the details about world cruising logistics in the time of Covid:  https://www.seatrade-cruise.com/ship-operations/viking-revises-world-cruise-itinerary-eve-departure-and-details-what-went )

 

Yet, because we started from our own doorstep and returned to the same after such extended voyages, I feel we've had the World Cruise experience even if we didn't begin and end in the same port. They were both worthy adventures and we're richer for having experienced them.

I am so glad to read that others have the same idea that we have.

 

We depart on our first world cruise in January.  Among the screening criteria that we had was that it had to be a true circumnavigation of the Earth.  In our case, we start in Barcelona and end in Barcelona.  (To be honest, I really want the ship to dock in the same berth that we boarded 118 days earlier--but I won't be too picky).

 

To us, to do the Phileas Fogg-thing IS the bucket list--although we are taking 38 days longer.

 

With that said, everything about cruising is what YOU want in your experience.  Therefore, if someone wants to begin in Miami and end in London and travels to 30+ countries along the way, I won't be bent out of shape if they call that a World Cruise.  

 

In fact, after we do our first world cruise, we are open in the future of doing a non-circumnavigation world cruise as we would have already checked off that bucket list item of going around the world.

I guess it is one’s interpretation.  Yes, not circumnavigating the globe, but certainly visiting five continents.  Antarctica is a “float by“, but still right up close.  The 168 night World Cruise starts and finishes in Miami, so ✅.  Like others, the itinerary is still most important.  Any WC won’t please all the people all the time, but the 2025 itinerary suits me as it goes to the east coast of South America, Easter Island, South Pacific, New Zealand (although there should definitely be a few more stops on the South Island or at least cruise the astounds), Australia, Komodo, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam and Japan.  And more!  
 

If these places are on your bucket list, don’t rule it out just because it is not a conventional around the globe.

Silversea has just released its 2025 World Cruise.  It does go around the world in one direction, as well as having an interesting itinerary including Iceland.  Perhaps more in keeping with your “bucket list”?

 For wonderful ports, take a look at 2024 Oceania WC on Insignia. Probably waitlisted, but with stock market tanking you should be able to get a cabin. You can waitlist as many cabins as you like. Book with O to get a better chance. Best itin since 2021 which was cancelled.
