latebuyer Posted May 29, 2022 #1 Share Posted May 29, 2022 I’m still waffling on taking a pacific coastal or just flying to san francisco a couple of days. The cruise is 2 days in san francisco, victoria, astoria and catalina island. Are these places worth a visit? (I’m from vancouver so don’t care about victoria stop.) would i need an excursion in astoria or could i walk around? I’d like to see the astoria column if i go. I mean a long weekend in San Francisco or taking a cruise down the coast, presumably ending in LA if you are going to Catalina, are pretty different things. Given it has an overnight in San Francisco, and that some of these coastal cruises are pretty well priced right now, it could overall be less expensive than staying in a nice San Francisco hotel for a few nights and then you get the added bonus of headed south for a few more days. Catalina is lovely-- can be a little touristy, but feels very separate from LA which is extremely close by. Lots of shops, restaurants, and bars within walking in the town of Avalon and then some interesting historical sights like the Casino and theater. latebuyer Posted May 29, 2022 Author #3 Share Posted May 29, 2022 Thanks. Yes i calculate i can stay 4 nights in san francisco for same price as 7 night pacific coastal. Good to know catalina is nice. What about astoria?
KeepCalmBearOn Posted May 31, 2022 #4 Share Posted May 31, 2022 I wouldn't be cruising for the ports on that cruise, but for the ship itself and what it offers in dining, relaxing and entertainment.

There’s a lot to do and see in SF and the surrounding areas. It is worth a dedicated trip. That said, Santa Catalina Island is a neat place to visit, especially for us Californians for whom an inhabited island is a novelty. Being from BC, you might feel differently. But Catalina is warm and usually sunny, and the scuba diving is world class. Almost everyone gets around on golf carts, which you can rent. The town of Avalon is also easily walkable. At some point you should try to get there.
