Mendenhall Glacier - transportation

Curious on the best way to just get off the boat and get transportation to Mendenhall.  We would like to hike some of the trails around the glacier and have little interest on "tours" etc, just want to go to Visitor Center and then hike on our own.  What would you recommend?  We are at port from 7-3 in Juneau.

Here’s a link to the visitor’s center.  (See below) You can also take the city bus, but it will drop you off about a mile from the visitors center. So, if you don’t mind spending about $50, it’s worth taking a shuttle. (This includes the entrance fee) I haven’t used them yet but have reserved one of the two options for our cruise in June.

Here is a recent discussion in several options. The cheapest is the City Bus, but it drops you 1.5 miles from the Visitor Center. Most opt for one of the shuttle bus companies that average around $ 50 per person roundtrip.

We were there last week on NCL Encore. Glacier Taxi & Tours charges $35 total for all passengers for taxi one way and drops you off a short walk away. They do not collect an additional entrance fee as other taxi’s do.  Worked out well. We have the America the Beautiful Park pass that we used for entry but were not asked to show it. They can also pick you up for the return. We did not spend as much time at the park as planned and just walked down to the closest local bus stop. While we waited for the bus another taxi stopped and offered a ride into town for $5 each which we accepted.

Did you book Glacier Taxi & Tours on your own?  That is a good price for people that have the pass.

When we were in Mendenhall  2 years ago we saw a park ranger leading a group, so we decided to follow. They were tracking a mama and 3 baby bears (from a safe distance, of course).  We got some great video and pictures.

Where did you meet the Glacier Taxi and Tours in Juneau--was it right off the dock? Is it a van that holds 5   people?

This sounds like a good option for a party of 4 vs booking the $45each shuttle. But going to their website I cannot see a way to book it ahead of time. You just called them once you got of the ship? and same when you want a ride back? 

Sorry I just realized I am quoting someone who is also asking a question. 

Anyone have any info on using this taxi company  would appreciate it!

 so you just called this Taxi company once the ship docked? or had it pre arranged (looking at the website I cannot find a way to do this) thanks!
