SchoolNurseMom Posted June 30, 2022 #1 ย Share Posted June 30, 2022 I have been gifted a nice looking emerald necklace by my Fathers wife. He bought it for her on a cruise. I have no interest or desire to keep it due emotions and history that I will not get into here. ๐ I have the original paperwork that shows it was bought on a HAL ship. I am thinking that itโs probably not worth the amount the paperwork claims it is. The papers also indicate that this was originally a ring, but as it stands now, ย it has been made into a pendant on a gold chain.ย What would be the most reasonable recommendation of what to do with this? Should I take it somewhere local to me and have it appraised and see what I can get for it? Should I take it with me on my next cruise and see if I can trade it for something more appealing to me and without the negative attachment? Any other ideas? Thank you for any advice you can give me!
57redbird Posted June 30, 2022 #2 ย Share Posted June 30, 2022 I bought an emerald pendant in Colombia for a reasonable price -- having done no research took a chance.ย Took it to our local appraiser at home & it appraised for more than twice the amount I paid...that said, do what will make you happy.
SchoolNurseMom Posted July 1, 2022 Author #3 ย Share Posted July 1, 2022 Update: I did get incorrect info from my Dads wife for the necklace, but now have the correct sheet. I donโt think the paperwork matters at this point. Of course it states that the necklace is worth way more than I was quoted at a local jeweler this morning, but I will take it a couple more places and see what they say and what they will charge to sell it on commission for me. ย I would then take part of the proceeds and buy myself something more to my tastes if it all works out.ย
Rare Mary229 Posted July 6, 2022 #4 ย Share Posted July 6, 2022 Seek out a GIA certified jeweler/Appraiser. ย (Gemological Institute of America). ย Local jewelers without certification may be inexperienced or have other motives. A good appraisal costs a few dollars
