D. B. Posted July 12, 2023 #226 Share Posted July 12, 2023 Onboard Marina today. the Cruise Director is a woman from South Carolina. yes the Cookies are pretty tasteless. yes the promised Tote Bag is “not available due to supply issues “? But they have 2 types of them available for Purchase! No supply issues there? My wife carries a Nice one advertising another Cruise Line. so far we like our first Oceania cruise. They tell us it’s pronounced OceanIA but every one says OceanA? the only thing I would change is the Once a night show/act in the main theater at 9:30pm. we wish it was earlier. We won $54 playing Bingo and my wife made a few hundred on slots in the Casino. now I have to keep her from giving it all back ? 5
Rare GeorgiaPeach51 Posted July 12, 2023 #227 Share Posted July 12, 2023 Thanks for posting your trip review! It takes time to do it while on vacation for sure. We will be taking our first Oceania cruise in November, on the Marina, and I appreciate the information you shared. We have recently done three Regent cruises after many on Celebrity, so it will be interesting to compare the two lines. We tend to just go with the flow and don’t have expectations regarding O vs. R…..I’m like you…hoping to enjoy the trip! Thanks for all the good info! Most of our cruises in the last 23 years have been on Celebrity. We did one on Azamara last April (Japan 15 nights) and didn’t care for the small ship and tiny shower or the Ocean motion.🤪 this ship is twice that size but never seems crowded even though we are 1200 guests. food and service is outstanding and the Ice Cream makes up for the Blaa cookies. 2
jonthomas Posted July 12, 2023 #230 Share Posted July 12, 2023 I have read on another site that there are a ton of kids as much as 15%, mostly teenagers, behaving badly. This is on the Nautica, from Barcelona to Istanbul. "many of the kids running around the ship, unsupervised. A group of kids doing cannonballs into the pool, one jumping off the jacuzzi deck. Two boys nearly mowed my 87 year old father in law down." kids on the ship are one of the reasons we left Celeb. Do you see any of that on your sailing? If you don't believe me find a video of FDR (the founder) pronouncing it. While there might be rules of English in play a name is pronounced the way the owner of that name says it is. 4

In Great Britain everyone says "Oceania", pronouncing the "i", whereas in the US everyone follows Frank's pronunciation. The question is, why did he use the "i"? I hope we can work this out before everyone figures out simplyMore. 1

It has to do with P & O already having a ship called Oceana. I don't know if you've noticed but they say a lot of things differently in GB. I pay it no mind.

I never paid much attention...just figured people were saying o-shee-an-ya with a very muted y. Just for giggles I played O's youtube video of Vista's christening; the from-the-beginning O people do indeed skip the i as has been stated. However, listen to FDR Jr. during the intro (first few seconds). That said, if I meet you onboard, I promise not to cringe if you say boy-zee, but please don't say I'm from Iowa (you know, that state next to or-ee-gon).

Rare pinotlover Posted July 12, 2023 #245 Share Posted July 12, 2023 (edited) I believe the most influential part of the pronunciation for Oceania is: SHOW ME the MONEY! 😎🥂 After that, call it what you like! 🤪 Edited July 12, 2023 by pinotlover 2

This has turned fascinating. Every word ending in "ia" that I've ever heard included the sound of both vowels -- including California where I grew up, Australia where I didn't, and Beatlemania which I had in the 60s. So, to paraphrase an old song, "If saying 'ya' is wrong, I don't want to be right."
