Costa Mediterranea 3-5-06 review

Recommended Posts

I just returned from my vacation on the Costa Mediterranea. I will say lots of WOWS!!!

I had heard such bad comments, not only from Cruise critics but from people who had been on the ships. I am sorry that they had a bad time. My trip was wonderful. Very, very few negatives. When we would get in an elevator with others we would always ask if they are enjoying the cruise. The answers were always positive. One gentlemen said he was having a nice time but was ready to get off. He had been on the ship for a back2back. This was the next to the last day. Come to think of it, he must have been one of the nudniks.

We met two bartenders at the center bar, Michael and Arnel. What a great pair of bartenders. We had a little contest on who made the best martinis. Both were excellent, they also remembered us each night we sat down. One dirty martini and one clean. Made with Grey Goose. I miss that!!

It was great meeting our friends from Cruise Critic. Where are those 4 college men from Tenn.? I think that they were afraid of Judie and I.

Our weather was perfect. Paradise Beach was perfect. Our tubing ride in Ocho Rios was perfect. Oh yes we did have one problem with that. After our adventure on the tubes were over we headed to the bus to retrieve our money, because we wanted to buy the photos. There were two men standing just outside the fence that began making lewd comments along with jestures. Very disgusting!! We reported him to our driver and within 20 seconds they were gone. Here we are two old broads old enough to be their mothers. How would they like it if someone talked to their mothers that way. However we have heard worse and we got over it quickly. It was not the cruise lines fault nor our tour company fault. (Phil lafeyette).

I'll be glad to answer any questions, if possible. I did not do the shows. We ate in the dinning room 5 out of 7 nights. No complaints. We ate upstairs for breakfast everyday except the last. No complaints. Spend alot of time in the casino, and yes we were somewhat lucky.

Tendering is tough on you, but its better on this ship then others. Larger tenders are used by Costa. I am so sad to see the destruction caused by Hurricane Wilma. I know it will be years before it is back to normal. They are working so hard to overcome the problems. The tenders are going to be used for a long time, its not that bad and people just need to get over it!

I would sail on another Costa ship in a heartbeat. Anyone have room in their suitcase?

Yes, we were in a category 7 cabin 6299. Very nice, ample storage, good location, two chairs and a table. I did forget to mention that they do not have shampoo and conditioner. The cabin stewart told us that the dispenser in the shower is a combo of body wash and shampoo. We brought with us a small bar of Dove soap and used that for washing and I had brought a bottle of shampoo.

Hi, how was your trip home? It took us 15........minutes. Did you have that soap dispenser in your shower?

Hi Linda!

We had a great trip home, rented a car and spent 3 days in Venice, FL. I will post a full review of our trip and photos of everyone tonight when I get a chance. And yes, we had the dispenser, but I wasn't sure exactly what was coming out of it! I'm glad we brought our own shampoo!

It was great meeting everyone!

Hi Linda, Ron and Jane!

Glad everyone made it home safely and had a good time on the cruise!

Linda, we thought about you and your 15.......minute commute home from the ship as we were killing HOURS in Ft Lauderdale before our 7pm flight! Figured you were home, unpacked, laundry done and back out by the pool about the time we were looking for a place to have lunch! :) We finally got home around......midnight!

I'll be posting a review soon, as well. Hope all our other Cruise Critic friends got home ok.

Man, works a drag, after a week on a cruise! :D

Hi Geri,

It really is a drag getting back. I've been pampered for a week!!! I did get home quick. I gave my grandchildren their gifts, my son three bottles of Kahula, unpacked and then took a nap. I never get seasick on a cruise, I am the type that gets it when on solid land. It really has taken a while to feel normal (Whatever that is).

I have a few things in the works for more vacation. My high school reunion is next week. It was suppose to be October 23, 2005 but was cancelled due to Hurricane Wilma. For the forth of July week, friends of mine have two time shares on Hollywood Beach. We use one of them for the entire week. Its great!! Now all I have to do is plan a cruise for the fall. I have my eye out on the Caribbean Princess for 10-29-06. :)

I downloaded my pictures in webshots, but not sure how people can look at them.

Hey Linda!

I know how you feel. I've been dizzy ever since I got off the ship. I keep telling everyone that the boat's moving, but they just look at me strangely (this is usually after I've fallen over something becasue I'm staggering so much!) I guess once we get our sea legs we don't want to get rid of them! :D

Sounds like you have lots of fun times ahead! We cruised on the Caribbean Princess in Sept 2004 (worked in a shortened cruise between Hurricanes Frances and Ivan). We loved the ship, especially the outdoor movie screen and how they used the deck space so much at night. We also had a fantastic Cruise Director, who was very funny and a great singer. You'll have a blast!

Guess we need to start planning our next cruise!

Hey Everyone!!!!

What a great cruise! It was so nice to meet everyone from this board. We especially enjoyed lounging on the Apollo deck with Jodie, Lindsay, Mary Ann, Chuck, Jim and Cheryl.

Our shore excursions with Debbie, Karla, Geri and Mike were spectacular! And of course, a big hello to George, Linda and Rebecca - the queen of the slots tournament!

First things first -------------- what everyone has been waiting for (no, not beer!)....cruise photos!

Now for the review of the cruise...

The Ship was absolutely beautiful! Clean, spacious and loaded with art. Dining room was great, we had a window seat, although it was dark and we never saw much but Debbie and Karla waving at us.. :)

The balcony room was the best, we emptyed our mini-bar and used it for a fridge the whole cruise. No problem bringing wine, champagne and vodaka aboard in our checked luggage. We gave our room steward a $5 tip as soon as we met him and he bent over backwards for us. He got us an extra mattress, wine glasses, and real soap for the bathroom.

Food was a mixed bag, breakfasts were so-so, lunches were awesome and dinners were hit or miss. Some entrees were really good, others mediocre. Jane commented that we never had one dinner that everything was really good. However, with 6 courses to chose from, there was always at least one outstanding item.

Casino and bars were all top notch and we enjoyed gambling and drinks every night after dinner. The shows that we saw were OK, Newlywed game was hilarious!

Service left something to be desired, our waiter never made any dinner suggestions or even talked to us. The assistant waiter brought the wine, but never an ice bucket for white wine unless we asked. He also never poured more than the first glass for us. We would have to say that the dining room service was the only negative of the whole cruise.

We went to Club Medusa one night and they tried to seat us next to the kitchen. I objected loudly, and they obliged and gave us a wonderful window seat on the second floor. I could not figure out why they did this, as the restaraunt was less than 1/2 full. We did enjoy a very romantic dinner, shrimp scampi was excellent as was the service. Well worth the $46.

No problems with embarkation or debarkation, we were on the ship by 12:30 and off by 9:30am.

Shore Excursions

Key West - Not much time here - ship leaves at 1pm. So Jane and I took a very long walk to the La Douchia bakery to buy what was supposed to be the best key lime pie on the island. We bought 2 pies for $8 each, but decided they really weren't the best. Oh, well the exercise did us well. From there we did some shopping on Duval and of course, the mandatory stop at Sloppy Joes for a beer.

Cozumel -Jane and I rented a scooter from Isis in the center of town. Very nice old lady rented us the scooter for $20 all day. We scootered over to the east side of the island where the first stop was Mescalitos. We took and few photos and back on the road again! The east side of the island should not be missed, it is totally unihabited and features the most beautiful beaches on the island.

After passing the south tip and reaching the west side, we stopped at Mr Sanchos. GREAT beach! We enjoyed a few beers and margaritas here with only about 20 other people.

From there is was off to Paradise Beach, where we met all of our cruise critic friends! This beach was also great, but much more crowded. We enjoyed a beer and a pina colada here and then headed back in to town. We started following the scooter road, but it literally disappeard into a 10 foot chasm - a casualty of Wilma.. Backtracking to the main road, we wound the scooter up and drove like true Mexicans into town.

After returning the scooter, we stopped at a local patio for a few $1 Coronas..I would have stayed here all day if we had time! Then it was off to the local liquor store for some 1800 tequila to take home.

Last stop was the tourist favorite, Carlos and Charlies. As always, the college crowd was living large here, boozing and dancing to the very loud music. We heard a few of the girls had to be brought back to the ship in wheel chairs for some reason!

Jamica - We did the Phil Lafayette tour here with Geri and Mike. Phil was late picking us up, then he gave us another driver and we had to go pick up some other cruise ship people. However, they did get us to Dunns Falls before anyone else, and we basically had the place to ourselves. Jane and I didn't climb, but we took plenty of pictures and enjoyed a few Red Stripes at the top of the falls.

From the falls it was off to river tubing, this was a hoot. I killed my digital camera from the water, but was able to resicitate it later with the hair dryer. We stopped half way down the river for pictures and more Red Stripes..great!

After tubing, Phil took us to lunch at a local Jerk restaurant. We enjoyed jerk ribs and chicken with some sort of bread and of course, more Red Stripe! The hot sauce served with the meal was awesome.

Phil then took us on a brief tour, during which he gave us a little history of the island and it's flora. He showed us Mick Jaggers estate and stopped so we could take some pictures in a scenic area. We then took a jaunt to the fern gully, which was really neat, especially the gift shops displaying male statues with huge...umm..appendages. What exactly is that all about anyway??

Our final stop in Jamaica was Margaritaville, which was full of drunk college girls. Of course another Red Stripe was in order as well as a free margarita (find the lost salt shaker!)

On our way back to the ship, I was offered some of the local weed, which I kindly declined...

Grand Cayman - We took the Capt Bryan tour here. The bus to the boat was right on time and we were heading out to Sting Ray city in no time. This tour was the best - there were only about 12 of us on the boat and Capt Bryan was the best. He showed us the sting rays which we got to touch and kiss (yuk!) and then took us snorkeling on the barrier reef. The underwater scenery will blow you away!

On the way back to port, Capt Bryan raised the sails and killed the motor and we actually cruised in under sail. As we were sailing along, he served us each a rum punch, a spectacular finish to a great excursion.

Capt Bryan's bus dropped us off at 7 mile beach and we spend a few hours relaxing on the beach behind the Comfort Suites. We used the beach chairs there and no one said anything to us.

From there it was into town and more shopping and the mandatory bar stop - today was Senor Frogs. What else, more drunk college girls, but hey, who's complaining??:D

Final Impression

Overall this cruise was a winner! Jane and I really enjoyed meeting everyone from here and we hope to meet up with some of you sometime on a future cruise. We loved sitting on the apollo deck and partying all day on the at-sea days. The ports were all fantastic and the weather could not have been better.

I hope everyone else enjoyed this cruise as much as we did and for anyone else considering a Costa Med Western Carib cruise, all I can say is GO FOR IT!!!

Till next time....

-Ron and Jane
